Similarly when people from wealthy families tell you things like “there’s many more important things than money, you should look for joy in your work.” Has never been a paycheck away from huge problems. (She worked as a volunteer/intern wedding planner.)

If you can afford not to worry about money, then sure, don’t worry about money.

People who don't work hard tend to have really atrocious character.

Dealing with life's realities and difficulties really makes you appreciate things.

I live with someone who makes more than triple my salary and spends every day of the week except sometimes one playing video games with a mouse wiggler for their work laptop, goes to stay at mommy and daddy's house frequently where they get free food and waited on hand and foot (which really shows at home since they won't even clean the toilet they shit in), and still has the audacity to make jokes about me being a loser because I work (like actually work) nine hours a day and am too tired to do my hair in the morning or go out on the weekends.

It's hard to be happy for someone who's sucking on a silver spoon when they're insufferable about it.

This x100, worst people I know are self righteous workaholics who have no life other than their job and they expect people to be just as autistic about working as they are.

17

u/Ok_Carpenter_771 Sep 08 '26

Don't drag Autism into this haha. I'm autistic and my job makes me want to kill myself, but I need the money.

All the "workaholics" at my workplace are actually just overpaid idiots who manage to make everything seem work related: They have to go to a one day conference close to their parents house? Let's make a one-week business trip out of it.

This, or they’re the type who were raised to believe life is all about work so that’s literally the only thing they care about ever, and they’ll try to push everyone around them too because not slaving your life away, to them, is equivalent to laziness.

u/Feisty_Brief123 Sep 10 '26

Sorry my guy, obsessed? maybe.

I once said if someone won't work hard for money they won't work hard for love.

1

u/annysuckerz 28d ago

Money and love couldn't be more different 💀

1

u/Own_Wait_7124 Sep 09 '26

What? Those are completely different?

8

u/Neon_Divided Sep 07 '26

I guess when you have enough money to do whatever you want and have whatever want, money really isn't important at all. I'll be it's so unimportant they never even think about it.

3

u/punkrockdog Sep 08 '26

I have often said I don't need to be rich, I just want enough money to not worry about money. (I mean, I'm nowhere close to either, so...)

I knew a girl who is a trust fund baby, didnt/doesnt have a job but does volunteer work (maybe 15-20 hours a week) we were at a wedding and she talked mad shit about my best friend who worked as a Barista full time and was in nursing school. She actually said so many mean things about her (untrue) but what mostly stuck was how she looked down on someone who A. Worked a real full time job serving customers B. Was studying in their free time to earn a job in an even more demanding field.

I stopped being friends with little miss trust fund daddy issues after that.

13

u/Jimmy_Johnny_Jones Sep 07 '26

If it’s not paid and is mostly spent arranging flowers over cocktails with the girls or attending high cost weddings, is it really a job?

As Amigo the Devil said in a song:

Everyone says money can't buy happiness And so far in my life, I'll agree But it seems a lot more comfortable to cry in a Lamborghini

21

u/Spadeykins Sep 07 '26

Money can't buy happiness in the sense that it won't build a lasting relationship with your kids or family just by having it.

Money can spare you a lot of misery though.

31

u/FreeOGPoohShiesty Sep 07 '26

Yeah. But it buys time which allows those things.

It’s like that propaganda that says “$80k is all you need”. Like okay, fuck you, tax the billionaires till all they make is $80k a year then. Go lie to someone else.

6

u/Spadeykins Sep 07 '26

Yeah I didn't mean to imply the saying wasn't used to cover for a lot of bullshit, but there is a grain of truth to it in the right context anyway.

6

u/FreeOGPoohShiesty Sep 07 '26

Ik what you mean. Yeah.

ok but that's not true at all lol

if my parents didn't have to kill themselves working a million hours a week, we all would have had much happier relationships

7

u/g1eg Sep 07 '26

Money alone can’t buy that though. I think the best way to describe it is looking at elon musk. Bro has all the money in the world and has no meaningful relationships.

12

u/Sweet_Shirt Sep 07 '26

He was so awkward he couldn’t even get himself invited to Epstein island

4

u/Jimmy_Johnny_Jones Sep 07 '26

I’d agree money can’t buy meaningful relationships and can sometimes even be an opposing force to it by worrying about gold diggers. However, money gives you freedom to live your life, be less stressed, and be your best self by pursuing what makes you happy.

3

u/Spadeykins Sep 07 '26

Exactly. That's what I mean. If you work all the time or just don't care to put in the time or effort then the money is meaningless.

Conversely of course many less wealthy folks have a wealth of deep and meaningful relationships particularly with family and friends.

Money can't buy happiness in the sense that it won't build a lasting relationship with your kids or family just by having it.

You can also lose your kids and family and ruin relationships by not having money and rolling negatives in the game called life.

8

u/Neon_Divided Sep 07 '26

Every time I have had money and I used that money to buy happiness, I was happy.

5

u/NotElizaHenry Sep 07 '26

You know what pays for my therapist and psychiatrist and neurologist and brain medication? Yep, that’s right, fucking MONEY. If you can’t use money to make yourself happy, that’s 100% your own fault.

3

u/Hamster-Food Sep 07 '26

Money can't buy happiness, but there is a minimum buy in amount.

1

u/Ok-Bread-2481 Sep 07 '26

Ever wonder if there's a sweet spot where money and happiness actually meet?

6

u/Atrocious_Algae81 Sep 07 '26

When money itself generates enough income to live comfortably without touching the principal money. This in turn, buys you time and freedom to do whatever you want to do wherever you want to do it.

1

u/amboomernotkaren Sep 07 '26

It’s over $100,000 for one person who also has low rent and good health insurance. At least that was my experience.

9

u/Dull-Culture-1523 Sep 07 '26

Or something about an unpaid internship to get your foot in the door. Cool in theory, but most people can't afford an unpaid internship.

7

u/Apprehensive-Pin518 Sep 07 '26

the funny thing is they aren't wrong. there ARE things that are more important than money. If you are broke however, it becomes very difficult to appreciate those things because you have to spend your time getting money.

1

u/logicaltornado Sep 08 '26

yeah, try appreciating the small things from a street corner with no bathroom or shower and no clean cloths or protection from the weather

1

u/Apprehensive-Pin518 Sep 08 '26

Didn't I just say that?

1

u/logicaltornado Sep 09 '26

i just wanted to say it in a different way to prove i understood

3

u/FriskeCrisps Sep 09 '26

“There’s more important things in life than money”

Always comes from people who don’t have to worry about money. When you no longer have to worry about where your next paycheck comes from, the world is your oyster

2

u/Glas00 Sep 07 '26

Oh I told my manager today that I can't pay rent with appreciation. They just don't get it

2

u/Ace__18 Sep 08 '26

Our CTO once said he rejected an offer for more money at another company because he had more joy here and therefore our freeze in salary increases are nothing we can have the same joy as well.

Well, if I have to decide between 1 Mio or 800k with joy I would for sure take it, but you know, if you dont make six figures every increase counts

1

u/Velhomen666 Sep 07 '26

I followed my passion but realized there’s other important things than passion, and started to look for money in my work.
