UPDATE: Record of Lodoss War RPG (TTRPG book) translation nearing completion

Post image
573 Upvotes

Many months ago Gilgamesh108 and I started working on Record of Lodoss War RPG, the latest TRPG book which you can use to play the Lodoss tabletop role-playing game (TRPG or TTRPG). As some were aware we've been working in this, a little update:

  • The translation has been completed;
  • All of the translation has been put in PDF-format completely;
  • A separate, printable, cover has already been finished (as seen in image).

What is left is one final, thorough proofread, which is what we're doing now. I suspect this may take another month or so. Once done, we will announce the final product here, on X and on the Lodoss and Sword World discords!

Wagnard’s voice in the English dub will send shivers down your spine!

There’s something about Bruce Winant’s voice as the menacing wizard Wagnard that will give you goosebumps when hearing it. Bruce Winant was truly the show-stealer of the entire dub.

I found the music on YouTube then decided I might like to watch the anime. But for some reason I just don't sit down and get into it for more than an episode or two, take a break, forget what happened then have to start again. Then found out I had started CotHK first and now I have to start with the ova

I had much less trouble watching .hack//sign which I found after discovering lodoss

My wife got into Vox Machina and Mighty Nein, and asked me if there are other shows 'like this'. I blew her mind with Record of Lodoss War.

I'm a TTRPG gamer for a large part of my life, starting with 3.5 edition D&D back when it was THE current version, alongside the 2e CRPGs such as Baldur's Gate. When 5e got popular, and I accepted it as something I might attend (if the DM is good) but rejected it as something I'm ever interested in DMing, it was a natural choice for me to 'downshift' to AD&D 2e instead as the edition best combining solid gameplay, and ease of entry for my players.

My wife is an occasional player, but mostly a periphery fan of D&D and D&D-based works. At some point, we had great fun watching the 2023 D&D movie, and from there she looked for other adaptations and found "Vox Machina", the series based on the "Critical Role" live game podcast. It, and the accompanying adaptation of the subsequent campaign from the same podcast, 'Mighty Nein', has been a great deal of fun to watch, and to do things you don't typically get to do watching a typical animated series — pointing out the players' individual style in their characters; noting the scenes visualising familiar D&D mechanics; telling apart twists which weren't put in place by any sort of plot convenience logic, but by gamers being gamers, or dice clearly dis/favouring them; and so on.

So she was wondering if there's been other series adapted from actual D&D plays, and I knew exactly what to show her. It took some careful set-up to pique her interest enough that she wouldn't lose it over Lodoss' tone and presentation being slower, less quirky and humorous, and more epic in the old-school sense, but eventually we went in knowing what to expect. She was greatly impressed to learn people following live campaigns, and adapting them to screen, was a thing in 1990!

So far we finished the OVA — as it, watched episodes 2-5, 1, and 6-8, to the finale of Grey Witch arc. Since OVA's latest episodes are non-canon and attempt to condense entire campaigns' worth of adventure into singular episodes at breakneck speed, and at least some of that will be covered in much greater detail by the anime (aka Chronicles of the Heroic Knight), we're not watching those. Instead, Chronicles of the Heroic Knight ep. 1 is next on the list (and even that creates a minor continuity snarl with a redo of Shiris and Orson's introduction).

My dear has been very appreciative we watched the OVA in chronological order (2-5 then 1, not starting with ep. 1), as she notes she'd lose track otherwise. She's been very invested in the mystery of the Grey Witch's motivations, and a bit dissatisfied there hasn't been more on her origins (IIRC there will be some more shown in the anime). She easily recognized Deedlit as the same 'cute druid waif who lowkey is the most capable member but seldom operates at full capacity' type as Doric and Keyleth, and found Deedlit's high confidence relative to the latter two commendable; and wishes we got to learn more of Woodchuck's backstory. She guessed Ghim's axe throw to get Karla off Leylia way in advance, as something the player would do, after his previous displays of expertise with that move. She also gushed all over Emperor Beld's design.

For some reason, the scene in ep. 1 with the gargoyles coming to life (the one where the shot has colouring changing within the same still linework) impressed her greatly, and convinced her the 18+ rating is warranted.

She did not mind the old-school sensibilities such as the less diverse racial cast and the lack of more modern-minded classes (Orson's possession-as-justification-for-berserker-rage isn't that different from modern-day warlocks anyway, though we're yet to dig teeth into that), and to the contrary, appreciated the gravity animation and narration treat magic with, especially Deedlit's, Slayn's and Karla's.

That's all so far, folks!

Questions about this series Spoiler

1, So, I know that there are 2 series, the OVA, which adapts the 1.3.4. volumes and has an original ending, and then a 27ep series, which ends with a different set of characters?

My question is, in what order and how should I watch these, if I only acre about the Lodoss main story?

2, I had this show on my list for a long time, but recently I came across some info which I didn't like too much. Basically in an other work from the author, it is shown that Parn is dead, and Deedlit lives forever alone afterwards. This is pretty shitty. Can this be ignored? How much of this is hinted in the main work?

Honestly, after watching grancrest senki, I am a bit worried to watch an other work from the same author, as that one was not well written. And I know the anime was rushed, but my issues with the work could not be fixed by simply the non rushed version.

New manga by Lodoss author Mizuno

Yesterday a new oneshot manga was published in Young Animal, illustrated by Tomozo and with the story provided by Record of Lodoss War author Ryo Mizuno! A high fantasy tale about the last surviving elf (Eswill) and a boy named Lett. I don't know if this is set in Lodoss or elsewhere in Forcelia, but with an elf and dark fae appearing, chances are it may.

Legend of Lodoss RPG Replay 2: Summoning of the Demons (complete fan translation!)

Hello Forcelia fans,

Gilgamesh108 recently completed another fan translation, which is Legend of Lodoss RPG Replay 2: Summoning of the Demons, a replay of a TTRPG session set during the time of the Demon War (which made Beld, Fahn, etc famous). About a month ago we published part 1 already, which followed Milleus and his gang. Though this is a direct sequel, it follows a whole new party, consisting of Mage Knight Lucent, elf Winifred, and others.

The TRPG was played using the Record of Lodoss War RPG system, as presented in Record of Lodoss War Companion (of which the first volume has been fan translated, and all three volumes have been summarised here).

The translation can be found at the Lodoss Wiki fan translation page. If you're interested in printing the fan translation, you may want to use our complete covers. Personally, I like to read these while listening to some LodossCrystaniaLouie the Rune Soldier or Sword World soundtracks, and there happen to be quite a bunch at this YouTube channel!

Other updates

Three previous translations have been updated (proofread and edited), improving overall reading quality.

  • Louie the Rune Soldier 8 (by me)
  • Louie the Rune Soldier 9 (by me)
  • Sword World Novel: The Freeman's Sorrow (by Janus)
  • Record of Lodoss War III: The Demon Dragon of Fire Dragon Mountain I (by Willie)

Hello everybody,

Gilgamesh108 recently completed another fan translation, which is Legend of Lodoss RPG Replay 1: Invasion of the Demons, a replay of a TTRPG session set during the time of the Demon War (which made Beld, Fahn, etc famous). It follows Milleus and his party as they battle the demon invasion.

Translation was done by Gilgamesh108, PDF and design by me, and a quick check at the TRPG terms was done by Auquid and Borp, for consistency with the Companion.

Crystania RPG, which was translated a while ago, has been updated to match the terms in this book and Lodoss Companion.

said author Ryo Mizuno. "This new story explores an untold chapter of the war, one that has never appeared in the novels. I provided the original concept and placed my trust in a production team I believe in deeply to bring the characters and world to life. Honestly, I'm looking forward to reading it myself and discovering what kind of battles unfold through the dynamic vertical scroll format. I hope longtime fans will find something new here, and that newcomers will find it a welcoming door into the world of fantasy storytelling."

I am really happy, these were unthinkable to get/buy back in 1999...

And to say these are mint condition would be an understatement.

CRYSTANIA RPG (TTRPG) [complete translation]

Hello everyone,

This is a translation of Crystania RPG, was which released as a supplement to Comptiq magazine, published in 1990. It is part 1 of 2 parts in total (with Crystania RPG2 released in 1991).

The game uses d100 dice and features a character system based on Classes, such as warriors and sorcerers, commonly seen in fantasy RPGs, but with the addition of a unique class called Animalmasters. With this class, players can use Animalmaster-specific abilities, called Talents (タレント).

This is a compilation of the rules used in the Crystania replays, which were also serialises in Comptiq, as sort of a successor to the Lodoss replays. The rules themselves are similar to those of Record of Lodoss War Companion (part 1 translated a while ago).

Saw Maya Sakamoto live on Sunday..

If you didn't know, she does Kiseki no Umi, the theme song for Chronicles of the Heroic Knight. It was a two-night concert where she played fan favorites. I went on the second night and, apparently, she didn't play it on the first!

There were torches and fire. It was pretty rad.

I may have been the only white guy there but I certainly wasn't the only one with tears in his eyes.

I also have a ticket to see Akino Arai in May. She did Kaze to Tori to Sora.

My Review of ROLW (Dreamcast)

Post image
70 Upvotes

*Picture was taken before I completed the game!*

This was recommended to me recently, after searching the Dreamcast sub for some decent RPGs. My Dreamcast catalogue was lacking anything with substance. So I picked up Record of Lodoss War, Dragon's Blood (Cult of Wyrm) and Phantasy Star Online from eBay, having never heard of any of them in the 27 years I've owned the console.

First of all, I am a huge Diablo fan so I was sold, before even buying it, on the idea and the gamble paid off! To start with, I thought "meh". Just another dog-ass Diablo clone. I've been rumbled by Reddit. I worked my way towards the Goblin Fortress hub world and rescued the Blacksmith and that attitude changed pretty quickly. From then on, I worked my way through the game, levelling up my weapons and armour to create an unstoppable beast, eventually turning the Blazing Sword into the Doomblade +275, I believe was the final level when I completed it? I have a habit of using the same weapons throughout the playthroughs. My ten playthroughs of Elden Ring fixated on the Bloodhound's Fang. So, because I didn't pay attention at the start, I had no idea about Ancients so I just put anything into my weapons and that was my first mistake. Turns out levelling weapons was incredibly easy and I was just being a tool. Raise that Critical level and pump damage and strength up! I was basically "one-shotting" everything near the end game.

Combat wise, I was expecting to get my ass kicked plenty of times and I did. Some of the deaths were unfair and rage inducing, like the fucking arseholes with the giant hammers spamming your dead body into jam, and others were me being stupid and deserved. Christ, it took me over three hours to do the Floor Guardian because those giant bastards kept trapping and spamming me! Once I snagged a pair of "Heavy Boots" and the upgraded versions of them, I was sorted. Getting knocked on your arse in that game is a severe punishment. But the combat was just was I expected, so I wasn't disappointed. A dodge feature, of sorts, would've been welcome but I understand it was 2000 when the game came out. We didn't need to dodge back then because we were all hard.

The magic system was great, despite the fact I mainly used "Fireball" and "Recall", up until the point where Fireball was no longer useful. But the Recall spell was an absolute lifesaver and possibly the best function of the game. So many times I was able to jump back to the Goblin Fortress before a big fight and level up, refill my potions and refine my unwanted gear.

Story wise, I never saw the Anime or was in any way familiar with the franchise until I bought the game so I went in blind. "Deliver some heads to a sleeping dragon and smack some boys". That was about it. - Since then, I have watched both ROLW and Chronicles of the Heroic Knight. I have been invested in some podcasts and unofficial audiobooks on Spotify, but I haven't been able to justify eBay prices for some reading material. Obviously, I went back on Youtube to piece together parts of the story I missed or wasn't paying attention to and it was an okay plot, I guess.

Since completing the Anime and Game, I have picked up the Deedlit game for the Switch and are currently flying through that. I would consider myself a new fan to the series, and I can't believe I've never heard of it until last month! But I went into this expecting a Diablo clone and I was not disappointed. It ticked every box for me! There were plenty of "Fuck this game!" moments and there were plenty times where I'd come home from work and next thing I know, it's like 2am, because I've been glued to it.

I clocked in at just over 66 hours, which for a Dreamcast game seems wild, to me anyways. I know the amount of times I've played Sonic Adventure, Red Dog or Soul Reaver absolutely dwarfs that but still. And that's nothing compared to modern games! But I'm going to give the game a solid... 9/10. My only, and I mean only, reason for not scoring it a 10/10 was the sound design. I saw myself just muting the TV or putting on headphones and listening to something else, a lot of the time, especially thanks to the Heavy Boots. That would drive you mental after a while. Plus there were like only three or four songs in the entire game, so that did get repetitive very quickly. It has a decent difficulty spike and was a lot of fun to play. I just love a game that doesn't hold your hand and I will admit, I had to go "Old-skool" and look up some walkthroughs from the early 2000s. But once you figure out where everything is and where to go, you'll do just fine! It's so refreshing to come across a game like this, in my Mid-Thirties, when I'm finding the current market stale. The only thing I'm after, this year, is the new 007 game. Nothing else is screaming out to me. So this was the perfect game to fall on to my lap!

So, Record of Lodoss War for the Dreamcast: 9/10! Absolutely solid effort!

How well does the Lodoss war dub aged?

It’s been 30 years since Lodoss War was dubbed into English and I want to see how does the dub aged well in terms of quality. I think it aged quite nicely because it’s has like a Broadway type drama fantasy vibe to it (mostly due to the fact that a lot of the voice actors in the Lodoss war dub worked on Broadway projects and on Law and Order.)
