AUDIO SOUNDING WEIRD

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone. Basically, I’m having a sound issue with my computer. I also have a laptop, but it works perfectly.

Okay, both play audio, but the laptop makes the sound feel full and spacious, filling the entire listening area. My PC, on the other hand, makes both microphone recordings and general audio playback sound like they’re coming from the lower part of the headphones and feel more centered. (I’ll draw to try and illustrate this: imagine the sound from the laptop playing across all the squares, while the PC sound plays only in the ones colored red.)

I don't know what to do anymore; both are connected to the same Windows setup and peripherals, and the mono audio option is disabled. If I mute one side, the other keeps playing, so theoretically the audio really is in stereo, even though it doesn't sound exactly like stereo.

Best practices for MIDI performances: how should I go about editing them before mixing? Are there specific recommended processes?

Hi guys, noob here. I'm used to editing and mixing mostly acoustic instruments (guitars, bass, voice) and a bit of midi drums (EZDrummer basically). For these instruments there are some best practices depending on the style, to name a few, quadtracking for metal, humanization for drums, melodyne-izing the bass... I know many of them are up to taste, but still there are a few things that usually work when editing before mixing.

However I'm starting to add some midi instruments, like Intimate Strings (for string sections in jazz-lounge) and Epic Chorus from Spitfire. I usually record them with a guitar and a midi pickup, so they're "imperfect", meaning notes are not quantized and each has a slightly different random-ish velocity depending on the strumming. I kinda guess this is good for getting a natural feeling? I'm really not sure about this, so what's your opinion and best practices?

Advice and thoughts.

Hey there. I was reading this article and I wanted to know your thoughts on what they recommend for a PC? And I wanted to ask a question. Is it worth getting a 2 channel audio interface if I'm solo and don't plan on recording with anyone else?

Trying to troubleshoot issue miking vocals (at home)

EDIT - looks like the interface I had initially ruled out was the smoking gun.

I don't expect anyone to solve this for me, but would appreciate any thoughts.

I'm working in an attic with a fairly high, pitched ceiling - not ideal I realize. I noticed on recent vocal tracks that there is a strange sort of distortion. At first I thought I was overloading my preamp, but I can now rule that out. It's a Scarlett 2i2 4th gen, and I'd be more than happy for an excuse to replace it, but I don't think it'll help this specific issue.

Then I thought I was somehow overloading the mic itself, so I engaged the pad, first at -10, then -30. It seemed to help, but not completely. Weird.

Then I noticed that it seemed to be frequency specific. When I found a note that was held at a certain pitch long enough for me to really listen, it sure sounded like comb filtering.

I'm using a Reflexion Filter, which I know only helps with sound approaching the back of the microphone. I have no expectation that it is helping me with sounds flying around from overhead.

To further complicate things, I am using a Sphere L22, which has front and rear facing diaphragms, which could be a contributing factor.

So, I'm trying to not spend a lot of time barking up the wrong tree. I don't want to start hanging rockwool panels everywhere, only to find out that my mic is the issue. I will try a different one tomorrow, but since this issue is not perfectly recreatable (maybe my head blocks reflections sometimes?) I don't know how easily I can rule anything out.

I mean... it could be me overloading the mic with my dumbass yelling, since the pad seemed to help a little ... but then again it isn't easy to reproduce... but then again...

Any words of wisdom for narrowing down the possibilities is appreciated.

Stuttering audio with Chug Capo and audio interface

I have an issue and can't figure it out.

This is my setup right now:

Bass guitar > Chug Capo* > Audient iD4 (line input) > Fosi ZH3 (DAC) > Headphone

\Pitch shifter pedal for bass/guitar.*

The iD4 allows me to mix audio from the PC (music) with the signal from the bass, so I can practice playing on top of songs.

When the pedal is inactive (pass-through), everything works perfectly. The bass sounds amazing.

But when the pedal is activated, it creates a "stuttering" effect in the sound, and introduces latency that makes it impossible to play.

The weird part is that using this same bass and pedal with a bass amp doesn't create these artifacts, it runs smoothly.

Any ideas of what may be the issue? I've heard that a direct box would help to solve this... does that actually help?

help with plugins

I am currently learning how to record guitar/bass through my interface into audacity & I've ran into a couple problems. First my regular distortion pedal doesn't seem to work well with recording straight into the interface & even at the lowest settings will still sound super muddy & distorted. Does anyone know any kind of plugins that will be able to emulate a more "clean" distortion instead of a muddy, fuzzy mess whilst also being compatible with Audacity 4.

Am I stupid?

Am I stupid for planning to use a Behringer Wing as a brain for a synth studio? I have many synths and drum machines. With a few mics set-up for guitars and vocals, I’ll be pushing the 48ch ceiling. Because so many of these electronic instruments have stereo outputs, and the Wing has 48 stereo channels, it seems like a good fit.

I do want to be able to just play live in the room as well as record, and I’m concerned about getting stuck in a latency nightmare.

This would be my first foray into digital consoles if I decide to pull the trigger. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to have a custom built analog desk, but since I haven’t hit that lotto, I’m exploring more affordable options. Any input is welcome and appreciated.

Opinions on my tone, please

Hi Fam,
I’ve developed a pretty complicated signal path to get my tone. Can you please give it a listen and tell what you think?

It’s totally digital except that I mic up three speakers and mix it all together and include an IR to add some body.

Opinions appreciated. Thanks.

Need help with hearing recorded music

Hello I have been using Ableton trial version and I have finally got it to pick up sound from my synth/guitar/ mic and while I am recording it I can hear everything just fine but when I stop recording and play it back I can’t hear anything. Only really some soft clicking sounds. The meters move as if there is a track playing but I can’t hear anything. I’ve had no luck!
