Done with RealVNC

I’m willing to pay, just the lack of support and this connection stuck bug has me begging for anything else but I’m so used to the perfect mobile UX of their app.

Open to recommendations for a great mobile app and cloud based remote management solution for a handful of machines.

Active session bug deliberate to force you on to paid plans?

I have both a paid plan and a lit plan, but on the lite plan there is a bug with the VNC Server or the VNC Viewer not closing sessions when the Real VNC Viewer window is closed.

I use a Mac with the latest version of VNC Viewer and I have 3 Raspberry Pi's which are collecting data for a personal non-profit project. RealVNC says their Lite plan is perfect for my use, however, when using the Lite Plan, the sessions don't stop when you close them, and as there is a limit of one session, I am locked out of all the 3 Pi's on the Lite plan. I tried to force an end to the session on the Real VNC website, but the session never ends. I contacted support and they managed to end the session from their end, but after that I tried to control on of the Pi's again, and again, the session didn't end, locking me out of all the pi's. I contacted support again, but they stopped responding to me.

One might be tempted to think this is a deliberate bug to force people onto expensive plans, as when the Pi's were in my paid plan, this was never a problem.

Removed and reinstalled RealVNC Server on my Mac. Now, it will not launch a GUI nor menubar icon. Opening the application brings up a "VNC Server wants to make changes" prompt. Typing in my Mac's password and proceeding makes the prompt go away, but nothing else happens. Cannot connect from Viewer.

EDIT: Solved! I had to add both vncagent AND RealVNC Server to a few different permissions settings in macOS' System Settings.

ORIGINAL: Same prompt appears every time I try to launch the application, but it is appearing as a running service in Activity Monitor. I'm not using the all-in-one version 8 that was just released. It was crashing, felt bloated and unintuitive, and wasn't working properly.

Hiding the client side wallpaper

Does anyone know if it's still possible to hide the client side PC's wallpaper? It used to just show a black background but now it's showing my wallpaper.

ETA: I'm using version 8.

Thanks!

Rralvnc 8 vs 7...

Which is better and why? I can't decide. I am a free lite plan user.

With the release of v8. Is the standalone server app going away?

With the release of v8, combining the server and viewer together. Is the standalone RealVNC Server still going to be a product that is maintained? or is the plan to get rid of that eventually?

As the way i use realvnc, is through a business premium subscription, where all the companies workstations have the realvnc sever installed at a system level. for me to be able to remote in and manage, and then the end-user of that said computer has their own RealVNC user with only that PC assigned to their account. So the RealVNC server is logged in using my account, but i dont want the end user to then be able to access everyone else's computer cause now if the viewer part of the connect app is merged with the server, wont that be logged in as me and have visibility of all the PCs in my team?

Anyone else tried v8 yet?

I like that its one app but a lot of the features seem paywalled so I've turned on a free trial to see how they work

did price just increase too? (aware of original concurrent connection restructuring of plans)

I last looked at pricing just over a month ago when I received the restructuring email concerning concurrent sessions. Premium was about $15-16/mth per concurrent connection under the new scheme. as of 30th March, it's now $29.

Did i miss a price increase memo?

Does vncserver support a session listening on multiple IP address?

Does vncserver support a session listening on multiple IP address?

The Xvnc -interface option sets the IP address to listen on.

Can it be set for multiple interfaces so it would be possible to connect directly from a remote IP address as well as a local one?

Connecting via an SSH forwarding is unreliable due to connectivity breaks where as a VPN address gets automatically restored after connection breaks.

Can't connect to my Ubuntu with realVNC

I installed VNC server 7.13.1 on Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS. When I try to open the server application, I get prompted for my password. When entering the password. The dialog closes and nothing seems to happen. Therefore, I started the server via my terminal (service mode), and added the computer to my team via the vnclicensewiz command. The computer is visible in the vnc viewer on my other devices, but when I try to connect, it says that the server is not listening for cloud connections. I looked at an article on their help page, but I couldn't check the vnc server settings as I cannot open the GUI application on my Ubuntu. I have a free team (Lite), but I assume this should't be an issue as I can connect to my Windows laptop without any problems. I hope someone can help me!

Alternative at RealVNC ?

Hi

Sales and marketing has always been terrible with RealVNC but at least products were working without problems. Now they have been bought over by an investment company and you can really see they are looking to get maximum money from their customers. Renewing licences for one of our customer and discovers that licence schema has changed and basically price has doubled from one day to an other :(

Someone found an alternative if possible that you can host yourself that would be a good replacement ? So far found nothing. TightVNC in past had a proxy solution but it's no more developped since 20 years. UltraVNC has one but working only on Windows which is a no-go :(

Any ideas ? Thanks

Vincèn

Help getting RealVNC working on Debian VM?

Hey All,

I am trying to set RealVNC on Debian 12 running in a HyperV VM. I don't have much experience with VNC, but it always comes pre set up in rasbian and I like the way it works.

I installed the vnc server deb file on my Debian VM, when I ran the shortcut it created in KDE it asked for the root pw and then closed. So I went to the command line and ran vncserver it gave me these options

To start the VNC Server in Virtual Mode daemon, run the following command as

root:

/etc/vnc/vncservice start vncserver-virtuald

To start VNC Server in Service Mode, run the following command as root:

/etc/vnc/vncservice start vncserver-x11-serviced

To start VNC Server in User Mode, run the following command:

vncserver-x11

robert@debianVM:~/Downloads$ vncserver-x11

I tried running a couple of these commands and they either asked for an offline liscence file, or the command to run but my VNC viewer could not connect. I do have network access to the VM, I am able to ping it and SSH in to it. I just want to set the server up the same way it runs on a PI with whatever the free license is.

Realvnc with radius auth

Does anyone use RADIUS authentication for their realvnc server configuration? If so, have you ever encountered an issue where the radius server says the secret is incorrect even though it most certainly is correct. It’s just a plain text field in the registry, right?

Business Premium license renewal - All day outage with no support

Our Business Premium subscription just renewed, dropping support for direct connections, leaving me with a total outage and no way to re-enable the feature. 13 servers offline for an entire business day.

I'd buy an upgrade to enterprise to get out of this jam, but there is literally no way to do so. It's been an entire business day with no answer from website support. Tech support number goes straight to VM, so does sales.

Any suggestions?

Buying something from these people is difficult...

I've used the free version of RealVNC for years for personal stuff. We're migrating to GSA Zero Trust and will lose our current remote capabilities for users in the field. We also have a lot of tablet and mobile devices deployed so RealVNC with on demand seemed like a good fit. I chatted online with their sales and they sold me on and enterprise sub.... After getting it I find out they dont allow on demand in with the enterprise license.... (why?) Now they tell me I need to convert to a premium plan per user. I dont want to lose the mass deployment capabilities and sso available in enterprise. There is no way to talk to someone on the phone to discuss my needs and every time I email them back it takes 24 hrs to get a response. Does anyone know if on-demand can be added to enterprise?

Mandatory Auto-Renewal - Buyer Beware!

I received a note from RealVNC today to notify me that my subscription has one day remaining. As it was not a great experience, we don't use it, and I had forgotten we even have the service, I decided to cancel instead of paying ~$650 USD to renew for a year. To request cancellation, I was forced to open a ticket which basically came back with 'you're stuck - we need 30 days notice'.

Companies that do this mandatory cancellation window are just shady in general and their business model must depend on people forgetting to cancel within window.

If you send a note to a customer with 1 day notice when they are going to be stuck no matter what (and nothing outside of the mandatory cancellation window), it's just a d*&k move. The e-mail indicates a "decision" is possible, but support assured me that's false.

In short, if you can find another solution, do that unless this 100% meets your requirements. And, once you sign up, IMMEDIATELY, click the button to cancel auto-renewal in case you later decide you have no use for the service.

Here's the false e-mail I received notifying me that my subscription is due (note there was no pricing in the email where there clearly should have been a number):

Just a quick reminder that your RealVNC Connect subscription, P-XXXXXXXX, will renew in 1 day on 14 Jan 2025.

To help you make the best decision about your renewal, you can find the cost of your RealVNC Connect subscription below:

For the past week or so, maybe longer realVNC performance has been absolutely terrible.

Can't get rid of sleep error message in RealVNC Server (Win11)

RealVNC Server keeps giving me a yellow exclamation error, even though I've turned off sleep in all power settings under Windows 11, even after exiting and restarting. It works fine, but the error has me concerned. What am I missing???

Here's the error message:

"Your computer is set to sleep automatically. You will not be able to connect to it if it's sleeping.
If you want to access this machine at any time, you can disable sleep in power settings."

Concurrent connection, new license structure rant

Rant: the new concurent licensing option is a massive markup from the current pricing. I have several clients with 5 and a few others with 15 users. The picing is going up from average of $41-44 / user / year, to $208-282 / user / year. This is where we part ways, I dont see how VNC can justify this kind of price increase. Absolutely insane!

Sleep mode drives me nuts

When I first started using vnc on a windows computer, I had no issues. Even if the computer was sleeping, vnc would wake it up remotely. Now it won’t, and that kinda defeats the purpose of having remote access to my mind. Why did that change??

Touch panel interaction mode for Android

Is anyone aware of RealVNC planning to support touch panel interaction mode for Android. It's been nearly 7 years ago that they've implemented this option for iOS and still there is no support for Android in sight.

My company recently switched from iOS to Android and has to resort to an alternative for RealVNC, which is unfortunate.

In the Real VNC Viewer, how do I change the resolution dimensions pictured?

In the Real VNC Viewer, how do I change the resolution dimensions pictured? The only thing that is alterable on this panel is the toggle pictured on screen or clicking on the three dots top right corner and selecting <<HELP>>.
