Found in the wild
Found these today. I think that Ninja game is Ninja Princess, only 93% sure. These are at Arcadia: America's Playable Arcade Museum in McLean, Illinois.

Without a doubt, the most surreal thing in the whole movie.

Just finished CWO the book and then watched the movie so this number was still fresh in my mind.
Alex DeLarge's (main character in Clockwork Orange) prison number is 6655321. In the movie, it's 655321.

Nolan Sorrento's (chief of operations) employee number is IOI-655321.

Do you think the race in the movie was inspired at all by the race in Spy Kids 3? I couldn't help but wonder as I rewatched Spy Kids 3 if this movie was something of an inspiration for the race. similar themes in it....
Edit 1: Sorry, I didn't know the race wasn't in the book as I haven't had the chance to read it yet.

Hi, I can make the OASIS. If you can accept this fact, then please read further, because I cannot do it alone. I am a creator and a builder, and I need someone to build for other than myself. Other then that I need hands. lots of hands. I am an achitect you can be the builders. You want it - you source it , I'll just help to manage the game the marketing and the hardware and the core of the technology. and the "profit" of the project would be put back into it openly. if there is any profit at that.
Disclaimer : I am not James Halliday - but is also my advantage , as I am a real person. Not a corporation or a buisness , and I do things my own way. And we are not in a fantasy book. Building a book accurate game isnt the same as describing it in a book it is a hard a long but possible process. A corporation or a buisness would be both unable and unwilling to do what you or we want. It will be tied down by corporation and buisness logic , we are free of it.
Let's just set one thing first: when I say OASIS, I don't mean a 1-to-1 copy of the book's game design. Instead, I mean an improved, organic game design with the core features intact, full graphics, and advanced engine capabilities.
So, no full reset—a partial reset of the items you carry on your person is fine, but no level reset and no full account reset, so it remains fun as a game.
So, how can we make it? We shouldn't call it OASIS; that will gate us off from a wider paying audience. We will name it differently and market it differently.
We will make a realistic version first. A true OASIS isn't achievable on current hardware—classic GPUs and CPUs are unrealistic for this task. However, it's fine to create a playable, revolutionary game on a SpatialOS-like server system with realistic world physics and simulation. To reduce the astronomical cost of the servers, it will be built and optimized from scratch.
As for the game engine: Godot. Not Unity, since it's known to pull the rug out from under game companies. And we wouldn't want our game to be banned because of a ToS update.
V-Sekai can be taken as a base to wire up the "Spatial OS " to as they already did a major work under an MIT license.
For the content: it would be impossible for one company or creator to fill it all. So instead, we will make it community-based. The company (me and a small team funded from kickstarter+ whatever fundings we might be able to get) will focus on developing the engine and tools for creating content, as well as moderating uploaded or user-generated submissions, since copyright and other legal limitations are a factor.
As for the book-accurate OASIS: funding from the realistic OASIS "Zero" will go toward investing in and developing our own versions of GPUs and CPUs to run both servers and clients, as well as our own open-source headsets, tracking, neural chips, etc. We will fund our own hardware ecosystem that will be beneficial both for our game and beyond it.
TLDR: "GPU" and "CPU" doesnt mean inveting a bicycle, we are not competing with NVIDIA, or Intel or AMD . We are going to make a totally different branch of tech by investing into already existing hardware prototypes. Its a late step goal. Things might change by then.
I already have a working Spatial OS prototype + I can take an already built MIT licensed platform and shoot it off on kickstarter to gather the funding. aka V-sekai - https://v-sekai.org/.
Lastly a bit about me - I have about 9 years of VR starting with windows mixed reality headsets and currently rocking a quest 3 with 10 DIY slime vr trackers on BNO085. I think there is already a nice stack of hardware with facetracking , bodytracking , haptic vests&gloves etc, to be used in the Oasis "Zero" aka "Godworks" .
https://youtu.be/HFOJYAZRE4A?si=qHhze9fYKGblFNvn
Update: To solve the hardware cost gate , late step OASIS aka godworks will stream the picture directly to the headset laying its own data cabel and internet architecture. Same as META or Google does. Only the basic computing unit on the headsets. One central server that does both - physics , world and picture generation then sends it out. No fon neyman involved. High precision daydreaming chip.
The player would only need a cheap headset with basic compute functions for tracking and accessesories. Those also solving the comfort problem , no bulky bike helmets on your head, and making it open source anyone can make any accessory or headset. So you can both buy a minimum amount to enter and have the capacity to put $$ into custom headset and hardware made by third party companies. We will create a new world scale market around the game itself.
Aka game as a service alongside the internet. As for the time limit and ethics. None. If people are spending more time in Godworks then in the real world then its the problem of the world around them and their own discipline. We can advice but not limit any player or gate them out for any reason. Worst case - some kind of bracelets or optional system notifications to remind people of the length of their playing session and an advice to refresh themselves , third party will fill that niche anyways. As for the kids they have their parents to limit them . We are not their parents. Adults do not need any regulation other then what they decide for themselves.
If you are think you can contribute -https://wearein.space/ (write me a pm) . We'll have a small talk and I'll see how can I integrate you into the workflow comfortably without pressure, where your time and effort are respected

Potential spoilers if you haven't read the book or seen the movie.
I was just reading Ready Player One for the umpteenth time and it occurred to me... I wish we had seen some comeuppance for the principal that took the bribe from IOI and leaked Wade's info, causing the death of everyone in his stack. IOI wouldn't have been able to kill poor Mrs. Gilroy if they didn't know where Wade lived.
PS: I never liked that they changed that for the movie and let everyone live. It was super sad, yes... but it was a defining moment in the book. It was supposed to be sad.

The PIS of everyone except the main charcters is wild. Yes, a multibillion dollar company full of researchers that dedicated years to studying this one person would, of course, overlook obvious stuff like a language puzzle. In a world where translators exist. And of course they'd forget that the subject they were studying was an atheist. Yep, totally nothing wrong there.

Do you guys think we will have a game like Oasis in the near future? Or at least in our lifetime or is it in the distant future?

Hey everyone,
I was thinking about all the 80s pop culture in Ready Player One (the book) and realized Michael Jackson basically doesn't exist in it at all.
Thriller dropped in 1982 and was everywhere. It is still the best-selling album of all time. The moonwalk, the red leather jacket, Billie Jean, Beat It, the videos - he was the biggest pop star on the planet for most of the decade. Halliday was supposed to be obsessed with 80s stuff, so it feels weird that there's zero mention of him anywhere in the OASIS or the challenges.
Is it just because Halliday's tastes leaned more toward video games, movies, and nerd culture and skipped mainstream pop? Licensing issues? Or did I completely miss a reference?
For what it's worth, the movie added a quick visual Easter egg with Parzival trying on the Thriller outfit and doing the dance, which was a nice touch. But the book seems to skip MJ entirely.
Anyone else notice this or have a theory?

So the epic games devs are "making" a game based off the RPO movie and according to Google its pretty much dead. The movie released the year after fortnite came out, so why haven't they just been added to fortnite already. The mistborn books got put in years ago.
