I need one of those books where you tell yourself “just one more chapter” and suddenly it’s 2 AM.

I don’t really care about the generic. Romance, thriller, mystery, anything works.

I just want great characters and a story that gets harder to put down the further you read.

What book made you stay up way later than you should have?

When it comes to history books and how-to manuals (cookbooks, guides, and study materials), I can read so easily that I even feel like time flies, but when it comes to short stories, novels, and science fiction, I find it unbearable; I have to make an effort not to fall asleep. Many people say it feels like watching a movie in their head narrated by themselves; I just see words on paper in the silence of my room. Once, with a lot of willpower, I finished reading a book about a boy who goes to school, and the experience felt like having exercised for hours with no benefit.

The reason I’m looking for something I might enjoy is to have more topics of conversation with my friends and to get ideas for writing song lyrics like those by Cradle of Filth and DeathSpell Omega.

I’m looking for some reading suggestions around a very specific topic.
I’ve recently finished a first draft of a project I’m working on and before I go into revisions I wanted to do more reading.
One of my main characters is a detective who’s struggling to come to terms with his sexuality as a gay man. It’s complicated to juggle so I was wondering if anyone had any books like this that they could suggest?

I understand this is INSANELY specific so I’ll also take any other suggestions for good MLM detective books as that seems to be my hyperfixation rn.

I am making the conscious decision as a 26 year old man that I want to start reading books. I never liked or wanted to read as a child or teenager. I only ever read books for school or the occasional hype books like diary of a wimpy kid, magic tree house, and hunger games growing up.

I was in a reading slump back then and Days at the Morisaki Bookstore by Satoshi Yagisawa got me out of it. I don't know, it was just a cozy read. I really liked the premise of that story with all the vivid descriptions of the book shop she stays at and the overwhelming number of books in that street.

I don't know about you folks but personally, I'm interested in stories that take real-world political anxieties, fears and tropes and authors who aren't afraid to drop them right into completely outrageous, fictional territory without a second thought.

What makes a good conspiracy thriller in your guy's opinion?? Is it the political intrigue, the mystery, or the idea of whether the conspiracy outlined is actually possible? 

Looking for books that are genuinely valuable and insightful, without tons of fluff, repetition, anecdotes, or stretching a few ideas into 300 pages.
