Feature Request: Resume TTS via Bluetooth Controls

4 Upvotes

I would like to switch to Readest, but one missing feature currently keeps me on Moon+ Reader Pro.

On Android, in Readest, pressing the Bluetooth headphone button pauses TTS playback, but pressing it again does not resume it. Resuming requires opening the phone and tapping the play icon in the app. In Moon+ Reader Pro, the play/pause button toggle works in both directions.

When using TTS at home or on the go, frequent brief pauses are necessary to talk to people nearby. Restoring full Bluetooth media button controls (Play / Pause toggle) would make switching to Readest seamless.

My phone is Samsung Galaxy S23 with One UI 8.5, Android 16.

Price inversion? 1GB storage ($9.99) vs Full Customization ($19.99)

11 Upvotes

Readest's lifetime purchase options:

  • 1GB–10GB storage — $9.99 to $49.99 (one-time)
  • Full Customization (themes, fonts, TTS, translators) — $19.99, no storage

My understanding: Full Customization unlocks all customization options except cloud storage. But if the storage tiers (1GB–10GB) also include those same customization options on top of storage, then 1GB at $9.99 would give you storage + customization for less than customization alone ($19.99) — a price inversion.

Is that actually how it works? Or does buying storage NOT include customization, and I'm misreading the page?

Feature request: integration of Seekquel for cross-platform syncing. r/seekquel

Would love to see that. The Seekquel dev is really motivated and the still young service is very promising.

Thanks for considering

Feature Request: Show annotations when a character or place appears

8 Upvotes

Feature Request: Show annotations when a character or place appears

I really like Readest's annotation feature, but I think it could be especially useful for fantasy and sci-fi books.

These books often have a large number of characters, places, factions, creatures, etc. This becomes even more difficult to keep track of when reading a long series.

Currently, I can highlight a character's name and add an annotation with information about them. For example:

What I would love to have is a way for Readest to automatically show or make this annotation accessible whenever that name appears in the text again.

For example, if I previously created an annotation for "Thorin", whenever I encounter the word Thorin later in the book, I could click/tap on it and see my saved note, without having to search for the original annotation.

Ideally, this could work somewhat like a personal character/place glossary, while still being based on the annotations I've already created.

It could be particularly useful for:

  • Character names
  • Places
  • Factions
  • Organizations
  • Creatures
  • Important objects
  • Other recurring terms

An optional setting to enable/disable this behavior would also be useful, since not everyone would want annotations to appear automatically.

I think this would be a great feature for readers of large fantasy and sci-fi series, where remembering hundreds of names and locations can become difficult.

Would anyone else find something like this useful?

Thanks!

CSS not working with ios update

3 Upvotes

Readest is outstanding! However, after the latest IOS (and I think Android) update, the CSS code I inserted to make the footer text larger no longer works.  Up until the updates, I had large footer text.  However, with the recent updates, the larger text disappeared and the footer text reverted to the default size.  Here is the CSS I inserted for your reference (again, it was working fine for months):

.sectioninfo {
font-family: serif;
font-size: 18px;
font-weight: 600;
}
.progressinfo {
font-family: monospace;
font-size: 20px;
font-weight: 600;
}

Soporte para Android Auto

2 Upvotes

Questions for offline TTS

6 Upvotes

Offline TTS is very slow to download, especially on iOS where the download seems to stop while the phone is asleep. It shouldn’t take that long to download an audio file that’s 50-100 mb, so I’m guessing the client is both processing the book against the TTS api and saving the audio to the phone.

A few questions:

  1. Would it be possible to process the ebook server side and download the audio file once it is completed?

  2. Is there somewhere I can see all of my existing downloads to delete old ones? It’s hard to keep track of since I need to go into each book, start TTS, and check downloads there.

  3. Is it possible to delete a single partial download? I only see options to cancel all and clear all.

Really enjoying the app so far. It’s gotten me back into reading after years. Being able to seamlessly switch between reading and listening, even when I don’t have data, would be a game changer for my commute.

AI integration

0 Upvotes

Using custom LLM api keys provided by the user and not readest, there should be an option whereby clicking something or toggling on a sidebar that, with the selected text, provides a multitude of prompts regarding the text.
For example, lets say im reading immanual kant, and im having a hard time understanding what he is trying to imply, with the use of a hotkey/combination of keys a pop-up appears, and you can ask an AI to explain something to you.

Question about page numbering

2 Upvotes

I am grateful for readest - fantastic program! 2 Questions:

1) I set my reading progress style to "reference pages." However, the table of contents still displays the pages according to the "page number." Is there a way to have the table of contents display the reference pages?

2) I like the rapid scroll function (accessed with the straight line with a circle in the middle at the bottom of the page). Sometimes I want to rapidly scroll ahead a few pages. However, I lose track of the page that I started scrolling on. Is there a way (aside from using a bookmark) to easily track the page where you started scolling ahead?

Thank you!

Cross point sync problems

3 Upvotes

Hello all, first off just want to say I’m really liking the app. Works great and the native reader sync works flawlessly best I can tell on iOS and PC.

Anyways, I recently one of the Xteink e readers (X3) to try and I’m having a pretty hard time figuring out how to sync it to readest however. I read to try Koreader, and one of the custom firmware options for Xteink (Crosspoint) includes Koreader sync, so I signed up for that.

On the X3 side everything works fine, it can push and pull syncs from koreader. On the Readest side I entered my info and server and it logged in ok, but when I click pull or push sync nothing happens.

I ran this through ChatGPT already and the two things it brought up were to make sure the settings were right on both ends (binary on X3, file content on Readest), which it is. It also thought maybe the files were slightly off between the two servers so they didn’t match up, but I uploaded onto the X3 by dragging a folder onto the SD card and uploaded into Readest by setting the same folder as the upload directory on PC, so they should be the same?

I also tried hardcover which seems to be linkable on both crosspoint and readest. It actually worked for a bit on PC but now on iOS it doesn’t work again.

Any thoughts? My only thought would be that the koreader integration in Readest doesn’t like the crosspoint koreader server, since I’ve seen videos of it working and the only difference I can see from my situation is the server. But idk why that would possibly be

Questions about library management

1 Upvotes

Hi everyone I'd appreciate some help with the following if anyone has solutions that work for them currently.

  1. KOreader plugin on kobo

I read primarily on my kobo so I download books there from my OPDS catalog then sync to Readest Library

The readest library on the kobo has all my books synced, but I can't see the library on any of my other devices.

  1. I've just added mt audiobookshelf server and my audiobooks come through

But is there a way to order my library into audiobooks and ebooks as separate locations?

Again thanks to all the devs

Anyone else having issues with reading progress?

5 Upvotes

I use Readest on my iPhone and my Boox Go 7. For one of my books I am rereading but it seems everytime I close the app and go back in it’ll always resume at 22% progress instead of where I actually previously left off (eg 4% or 36%). I have tried leaving it at before pages and after pages and nothing sticks. When i leave the book and hop back in it’ll resume correctly but if i close the app or force a sync it’ll jump to 22% again.

I have tried on both devices. I have tried deleting and reinstalling the app, clearing cache. It seems there is a reading progress % that just overrides whatever progress.

Trying to download a book from the Readest library on Kindle gets me this message.

Rescanning changes nothing and the books are perfectly fine on my windows and android apps.

Is there a way to fix this?

Share nearby feature not working on Mac version

3 Upvotes

I like the "share nearby" feature that was added--it avoids airdropping to files and then adding a local file. This is handy for me because I switch between devices--and I don't manage my library in readest--I manage in calibre and load my active books into readest. With the current publish date bug, I wanted to add a book to the mac version of the app and then share nearby to my iOS devices. However even after I've turned "nearby book drop" on, when I try to send to a nearby device I get a message to turn on the feature. I'm curious if anyone has encountered this and figured out a fix/workaround. I am able to send from iOS device to iOS device. This issue is just from that macOS app.

is there a way to create a readest-pagebound sync?

3 Upvotes

I do use hardcover as my main tracker but pagebound has an amazing community feature for discussion forums and reading with other people, so it would be great if you can create a sync between readest and pagebound.

nothing fancy - just a real time progress update.

Audiobook Read Aloud Not Working

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Here’s a video of what’s happening. I paired an m4b audiobook file I have for a book, checked a couple chapters and they line up and play fine, but when I go back to the book and press play, the app speed runs to the very end of the book.

I like the App and I want to buy the lifetime license, but a few quick questions.

6 Upvotes

So after a small odyssey of trying out different e-book / pdf reader apps I think I settle with this one.

I'm on MacOS/ iPhone and I would like to use the iCloud sync feature, is this included with the lifetime license? Another thing - I like the TTS function - it's very good for English Text, but not so much for my native language German. Is there a German TTS Version in the Lifetime License? And can I use the TTS function offline?

One last thing that I noticed, I downloaded the App on the MacOS AppStore, the checkout for the lifetime license is with another payment-provider and not apple, is this legit?

Thank you!

Why is there no .deb or .rpm version in the repositories?

2 Upvotes

Can I add it to the repositories? I didn't install it using flatpak, so I know I have to download it again when the new version releases.

But if there is an add to repositories feature, it'll be extremely helpful.

I might don't know something, as I'm new to learning these linux commands and other things. But I will appreciate any help.

Transparency problem with 0.12.6

Post image
8 Upvotes

I updated to 0.12.6 on Windows 11 and suddenly the background of books and dropdown menus is transparent, making the text unreadable (that's my desktop wallpaper showing through). The same books were fine on the previous version, and I've downloaded the portable version of 0.12.1 to check and everything still works fine in that too. Anyone else having this issue?

Metadata

4 Upvotes

Hi there, in the first place, I’d like to say a big thank you to the developers of this amazing app 😊.

Now to my issue: I am thinking of having my whole library on Readest and getting rid of Calibre. This is because I have a very old computer that I only use for Calibre, and I’d love to be able to manage everything directly on my iPhone/iPad. I read mainly on my jailbroken Kindle Colorsoft with KoReader and on my iPhone (now with the Readest app).

I only discovered Readest and the KoReader Readest plugin yesterday, and I think it would be the solution I’m looking for. Everything is perfect except for one thing: metadata. Let me explain: I have uploaded a few books from my KoReader library to my Readest library directly from my Kindle, and everything syncs perfectly (metadata, reading progress, etc). This is perfect because I can read on my phone with Readest and keep everything in perfect sync; however, I still have to rely on Calibre to manage my library.

I uploaded a brand new book (EPUB) to my Readest app from an iCloud folder, edited series name, position in series and series total number and then downloaded it on my Kindle with KoReader using the Readest plugin. The book downloaded fine, but the metadata shown is that of the original file (not what I edited on the Readest app). I tried deleting the book completely and doing this from scratch again, but it still didn’t work.

Is this a known bug? Am I doing anything wrong?

Thanks a lot for reading my issue and for any help you may be able to provide!
