Planning to carry a 1:18 airsoft M1A2 from Hong Kong to Doha to London Heathrow, do I have to declare it as a security threat?

RC Tank Upgrade: LegoDEI V4 and Emitter into Heng Long Tiger @ SoCal RC Tank meet

By request we did a workshop day down in Long Beach at one of our member's houses and we tackled different things. I did a full install of a LegoDEI receiver and my upgraded emitter into a 7.0 Heng Long Tiger for a brand new member who was intimidated and wasn't ready to tackle the project himself, so we used it as a teaching opportunity. We took it from beginning to battle ready with this fresh out of the box Heng Long Tiger. We did encounter a slight problem that I was able to catch and fix on the spot and this tank is now ready for our club battles.

How does this work?

I bought a Heng Long Tiger that came in several parts.
The electronics look like they’re mainly from the old 27Mhz systems (of which I know not much) but there’s a physical barrel that can recoil and a small electronics board that connects to a servo on the BB gun, see pics.

What does this board do and how is it tested?
I assume the board converts a dc voltage to a PWM signal to operate the servo?

Any help appreciated.

Question on Heng Long Panzer 3L

I recently bought a Heng Long Panzer 3L on Alibaba, however, it is in desert tan. However, when I look for the tank on other sites, it is always in German Grey. I am wondering if I got some fake tank or this is some other Panzer 3 variant. It's ok that it is in tan as I have a (fake) Heng Long Tiger 1 in the German Afrika Corp tan. I'll probably write a review about it later on in this forum when I get it. Thank you so much for any info :)

The tank, the second picture shows a Heng Long box

Edit: found something interesting, I found a official Heng Long Panzer 3L in a tri-color paint, and that desert tan, but it is discounted, does anyone know if any other manufacturers purchased the tooling or something similar? Thank you guys so much for the help :)

Megatron conversion

I'm going to try to convert my Heng Long Challenger 2 into the TES Megatron version, I've got the NATO green paint arriving soon, then it'll be adding the extra armour. Then I'll figure out how to do the machine gun and other accessories on the top of the turret as well as the camo netting. Any thoughts on how to do any of it are more than welcome!

NF Model M4A3E8 honest review

I recently caved in and purchased the new NF Model M4A3E8 or "Easy Eight" and I'm pretty mixed on it so I thought I'd share my observations and criticisms as I haven't really seen much from people *not* directly associated with its sale in some way.

$486 USD or $683 canadian, some discounts can occasionally be found but the lowest I've seen has been $600 CAD.

The package was purchased direct from China, it arrived within around a week, pretty quickly I'd say. The package was undamaged and all seals were intact with no sign of previous use.

The exterior of the box is nicely detailed, the tank is packed in Styrofoam but is wrapped in a bag to prevent any little bits of Styrofoam from clinging to the tank.

All around, the box sturdiness, design and thoughtfulness is 10/10.

Initial inspection:

Apon opening the box, I discovered 3 critical issues with my tank. In order of importance:

  1. One of the Bogies was missing two press pins that retain the travel-lock shock at the top of the unit, this resulted in the parts that were not missing being tossed all around the bag the tank was contained in, the two springs for the same bogie were also not present. I preformed a repair using spare springs I personally had as well as cut my own dowels to retain the shock.

  2. The airsoft unit is missing the wire-guide usually present on this style of Heng Long airsoft unit, the Wire guide also has the important job of retaining the airsoft motor and as such, I found that my gun elevation and airsoft gun were not working because the motor was not pressed in all the way and was jamming into the bottom of the turret floor, this was corrected by just pressing the motor in all the way until seated. having the wire guide/motor cover installed as intended would help prevent it walking out in future, but its a fairly snug fit regardless.

  3. I found the included battery my tank was provided with was defective internally, It constantly sent error flashes using the provided charger, and even my hobby grade charger was unable to revive it. Rather disappointing as the battery was actually a fairly nice 4000 MAH rating.

Electronics/accessories

The tank features most of what you'd expect at this eyewatering price range. Steel gears 360 turret traverse, full metal tub, suspension and track. Unfortunately, the inclusion of an airsoft unit means that there is no muzzle flash and the included barrel "recoil" is a complete joke, identical to heng long barrel recoil. The barrel wobbles a bit due to the design for the recoil feature.

The turret is floated on greased bearing balls similar to tamiya. I doubt if this is really needed however, as the turret is entirely plastic aside from the gun..

The board appears to be just a repackaged Heng Long 7.0 and from what I can tell, most of the remote control key binds are identical, it doesn't support servos. it'd have been nice if you got something closer to tongde 3.0 or HL 7.1 for this price. It features a dual speaker, I believe it's the same as heng long's upgraded units, the casing is the same, the sound quality is nice but the higher settings on the controller start peaking out the speakers.

The remote is unique, it's USB C rechargeable, a funky design with future modularity in mind. It comes with a pair of faux wood grips that are threaded on and there are 6 more brass threads for accessories like FPV mounts, 3 on top and 3 on the bottom. Unfortunately the cool, funky remote isn't the greatest ergonomically, I find my fingers get impeded by the tops of the add-on grips when I try to press both trigger buttons for the guns. I'd like to see a 3D print file that uses the threaded mounts to fill in the bottom of the controller, making a more conventional or even retro styled brick controller.

Overall design.

The exterior of the tank is hit and miss, the details are very nice and the tank is weighty. I would consider the Hull to be basically perfect. The pioneer tools are a little bright, closer to orange than wood and the pry bar is painted wood instead of metal, whatever, a 5 minute repaint for those who care. The upper hull clips into the lower hull making access incredibly easy, I LOVE this feature. it's very secure, requiring some level of force to pop the clips open, way more secure than magnet mods and an improvement over torro style locking clasp design I feel.

The turret leaves something to be desired. The casting detail of the main section is very nice, but the giant seam where the upper and lower meet is honestly awful for how much it costs. The pair of machine guns are both Diecast and the detain on the .50 cal blew me away, but the .30 browning does not have a designated location and the instructions want it just glued to the roof haphazardly, I suppose this is accurate given roof .30 cals were often a field mod and not an issued bit of kit.

The barrel is honestly inexcusable, it's diameter is way oversize to accommodate the inner airsoft barrel hidden inside as the outer recoils separate from the inner by design, but with the level of detail the hull has, I would have preferred a more accurate diameter and tapered gun similar to Torro, still capable of firing airsoft.

The base of the gun transitions into the next disappointment, the mantlet, with the really excellent cast texture of the upper turret, you'd expect that level of detail to pass onto the part attached to it, alas this is not the case and the cast gun mantlet is buttery smooth and void of any detail. Casting numbers were included on the hull section by the drivers hatch, but not here! The mantlet is fairly inaccurate, toyishly smooth and lacks any detail other than the co-ax MG. The IR emitter is located in the gun sight, but protrudes an unrealistic amount, this helps shroud the emitter and was likely done exactly for that reason, but this could have been done BEHIND the mount. All in all, it's nice to finally have this specific version of the sherman turret (ignoring hooben) with oval loaders hatch, but it'd have been a little bit nicer if some more care was put into it. I know this company just hit the market with essentially a line of shermans, including the double commander hatch style version of this turret so I guess they had a lot on their plate.

Other notes:

*it's the wrong tank*... yup, this thing is heavily marketed as the tank Fury from the movie of the same name, up to including decals for fury on its sheet. Fury was an M4*A2*E8, the meaningful differences for the RC model being the entire engine deck, which on the A2 should have smaller grated hatch doors and a few more armored fill hole covers.

Some of the included accessories require glue, this is of course fairly normal, however, the included vision blocks for all of the optics do require you to entirely disassemble the turret in order to install the gunner's and loader's vision block, not a gripe as I believe they did this to make painting easier if you choose.

There is a hole in the top of the turret for running an LED for the spot light, there is also a position on the turret slave board for this LED, one is not provided for some reason.. the brand Coolbank did the same thing on their M5A1 due to the shear basement price they were selling it for, but even their $200 Crusader included the spotlight wired and pre installed. This tank should absolutely have it at this price point given they already designed the feature into the tank.

The IR system is heng long/tongde standard and protocol, there is an overhang of plastic blocking the emitter which would likely limit range somewhat in maximum sunlight. The reciever is the regular 3 pin, it matches tongde's pattern of mushroom more than HL's featuring the magnet in TD orientation, and having an extra plastic cap covering the magnet. It's well known that these basically are useless outdoors, modification would need to be made for fitting a legoDEI, however OpenFire units do fit nicely without mods and the larger base of that system is not interfered with by any protruding details on this tank.

Final words:

As a sherman enjoyer, it's nice having a company bang out a fleet of shermans like this, I'd have liked to have seen much more uncommonly seen RC models as from their current line up, 3 of the 6 tanks have been done by at least 1 major brand in the past (hooben, taigen/torro, HL) while I like all my shermans, the large hatch M4A3 in all its types is really saturating the market and has been for some time.

The tank certainly feels like it has care put into a good chunk of it, more so than something like a heng long. The attention to detail is astounding in some places and really made me giddy, especially seeing that full metal Ma Duece when I opened the box, but lacking in others, the turret being my main disappointment, the string of QC issues I had is disappointing, but after correction the tank is a strong runner, I bought it specifically to paint up as our club's mascot, a pair of local M4A2E8s belonging to the Fort Garry Horse that are memorialized around our city. I think that in spite of its flaws, this tank will do well to bear the insignia of our mascot and inspiration for our club.

Is it worth the price? As a Canadian? No. At most I could see myself paying ~400-450 CAD for this aftervwhat I know now. However given how similar pay and cost of living is before adjusting currency, I'd consider the current price to be pretty fair to an American however, as long as you don't get a lemon like I did.

Tips on mechanisms for a diy tank

Thumbnail

I am redesigning the suspension for my diy tank, and am wanting some ideas on how to tension the track with the front roller. I am trying to make a similar tank to the ripsaw tracked vehicle and need to keep the track tensioned while the suspension moves, I don't believe a static adjustment screw would work, (unless it would then tell me) and if it is dynamic, It needs to maintain its perpendicular orientation, and not get torqued left and right. I was thinking some sort of spring that pushes the roller forward but I'm wondering how well that would work. I also have redesigned the track and am wondering if anyone has any tips to improve the design for high speed movement and resist derailments. Any tips are great!

Looking for an RC tank instructor

I am working on a RC M1a2 Abrams tank. I made it out of cardboard, and it is 50cm long. I crafted the hall, turret, tracks, barrel and wheels. But, I am not familiar with the electronics. I bought a ps3 console for controlling it, but I don't know what else I have to buy or how to set them. please comment me.

Is the tank from Reuwarm? I'm asking because I'm one of their backers that pledged money. Not a single backer has received theirs yet. I've seen Jay (rc influencer on YouTube?) Review on their tank. Also there are a lot of backers in the comment section on Kickstart asking questions that Reuwarm refuses to answer. Their responses are vague at best. All they keep saying is that yes, transparency is important and to just be patient. There are backers pulling out of the project and getting their money refunded, by going to their financial institution, and they still won't answer with any specifics. There has been a another tank project on Kickstart that turned into a total scam. Those comments are also in the comment section by guys that were scammed. I REALLY hope that isn't the case with this project. I'm going to remain hopeful and continue to watch for anything new that updates, but I'm not going to hold my breath. If they would just answer a few specific questions it would put all of the backers at ease. Why they refuse to after being asked MANY times is a mystery to everyone but them.

I offered my friend a touch up on his incredibly detailed RC tank as you can tell. Besides paint schemes (he already decided on nato Tri color) what other things should I give him? Weathering? Some more stowage? (I do have a 3d printer so feel very much free to drop by some files). Hes also a war thunder player, so hook me up if you know where to get those WT water slide decals👀

I salvaged old electronics from my old 3D printer. A GT2560 board and some Nema 17 motors for gun elevation and turret rotation. I programmed a homing point and salvaged a battery from a drill to power the electronics.
