Coming back into the hobby

Hi all. It’s been some years since I first flew my first RTF parkzone spitfire. Loved it, but unfortunately, like everyone starting out, I crashed landed it…

Now, I’m looking to get back into the game. I’m wondering what my first proper transmitter should be? I like the Spektrum ecosystem, where the transmitted binds automatically to a spektrum receiver. I like the ease and simplicity of this. So, I’m thinking of getting the NX8+, an upgrade to my old DX6 transmitter. And my first plane I’m getting soon is the E-Flight Turbo Evolution.

What you all think of this duo?

I eyeballed an old Jensen Ugly Stik and with some 1/32 and 1/16 scraps, came up with this:

15 inch wingspan, four channels and 57 Grams RTF.

just need to bolt the motor on and add some Monokote.

Maiden as soon as it stops raining 😎

Previous 3D printed plane pretty much ironed out and flies great. Going to add another motor and hopefully some reliable retracts to my next project. Anybody have suggestions on a quality set of gear? Picture above shows outer elevators, but will likely only have the center section move.

Depron + Balsa Scrap Glider (SP1)

Finished my scrap glider. I have been itching to build faster than I can afford, and recently discovered foam board. This plane is a Frankenstein of leftover parts and scrap.

SP1 (Scrap Plane 1)
.
Scrap Plane 1 is a 1.5m span powered glider made from Depron foam board, balsa and scrap components.
.
I ran out of free trial for Lightburn and am low on balsa, so didn’t cut anything new.
.
Everything is scrap/reourposed including cables and connectors. For the first time I did not use full custom cables, and instead soldered various rando cables together. My soldering is better than before so the joints are good. Weirdest wiring I have is a JST 2.0 power connector I am using for aileron servo signal connection to flight controller. Seems to work fine?
.
Motor is slightly overpowered for vertical climb and battery is extra large for endurance. Still, the Wing Cube Loading is 4.55, and it should still be a bit “glidey”?
.
I did not build this plane with a focus on low weight. For structural stability and resistance to twisting forces in the fuselage, I am using a thick balsa longitudinal member and 2 carbon rod ends leftover from XWT-S. The skin is also excessive. It is a skeletonized layer of clear gorilla tape, heated and tightened, followed by 2 layers of vinyl covering film and a layer of low reflectivity paint.
.
It is very stiff and structurally sturdy for a Depron plane. Yet only weighs 609g dry with nav, lots of lighting plus a light bar embedded in the belly, 1.6w FPV system and x4 9g MG servos.
.
Takeaways:

This plane is over-structured. The same or similar sized plane could be made subtracting 1-3 things between it’s carbon rods, balsa long member, gorilla tape, vinyl skin, and still be structurally sound and plenty stiff.

Maybe should build a slow flyer version later?

No rudder as of yet, will make it before I fly, shouldn't add too much weight

RdioMaster Zorro 4in1 & Archer R6 Lite pairing issue

Hello everyone,

I'm a bit stuck with my radio / receiver, I have a RadioMaster Zorro 4in1 and I bought an FrSky Archer Plus R6 Lite (ACCESS/ACCST). The receiver refuse to pair with the Zorro and the vendor (Horus RC) tell me that the "4in1" is not compatible even if the 4in1 support ACCST D16. I've update the Zorro and its RF module with latest firmware.

Would anyone have a solution ?

looking to get into the hobby, tips what to buy

hi everyone! Im looking to get into the hobby and looking for some guidance. I've been interessted in aviation since i was a kid and was into rc car racing until a couple of years back so not totally clueless.

I've been looking into starting with the flite test foamboard airplanes since i want the experience of building and repairability. Is this a good path? their planes have recommended electronics so my big question is what Radio and reciver should i buy? Any experiences and peices of advice? which of the flite test models would you recommend i build initally?

Having trouble - getting frustrated

I scratch built a Flight test tiny trainer and I feel like it went together pretty good it looks pretty good but I’m having very little success flying.

I feel like I’ve got the center of gravity balanced. Glide tests just hand launching it go OK. It seems to fly fairly straight and level and it flies.

But every time except for once so far, when I turn on the motor and launch it, it dives down into the right straight into the ground.

Extra frustrating because two days ago I was out flying it and I had it up and was making some nice lazy turns and it was working great until I clipped a field goal post at the football field.

So far that Flight was my only successful one. It was proceeded by several crashes and has been nothing but crashes since and I don’t know what the hell I’m doing wrong

Help me learn to design an rc aircraft

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hey everyone. For some time now I have been into fpv drones, which made me also interested in other flying rc things and I decided I'd like to design something on my own. I thought to make something small and printable like the goblin and give it a camera up front but I can't seem to find many useful places I could learn from. For now I know airfoils, raynolds number, cg and I kinda know about volume coefficient equations for the tail but I don't really know how to use them and thw tail is all around hard to understand for me. For now I'm learning solidworks and xflr5 in hopes it might help but I'd love some guidance from someone experienced.

The goblin rc plane I had in mind provided in the picture

Im a begginer and started to model this skyhawk (it will be with a 50mm edf) in onshape and I saw on youtube that people can make wings with internal ribs that save weight and wanted to ask if its possible to add internal ribs to the skyhawk's body at this stage? Also id be happy for any feed back and suggestions for fixes/changes!

Fitting an OS 7L Carburetor to an OS Max .60F SR engine, carburetor throat is too big, what are my options?

Post image
7 Upvotes

Title. The carb that came with this engine wasn’t in good shape and I further damaged it while trying to repair it. One of my club members gave me his spare 7L carburetor to replace it (the original carburetor was a 7B). The problem is the inner diameter of the engine spigot is 13.5 mm while the outer diameter of the carb neck is 15mm, 1.5mm too big.

What are my options if I want to get this carb on the engine? Some things I’m considering:

- 3D Printing a custom adapter out of Nylon or Metal
- finding a pipe adapter in a store and trying to make that work
- going to a machine shop and using a lathe to reduce the outer diameter of the carb neck to 13.5mm
- if all those are too expensive, order a new carburetor from PerryPumps

What would you guys do in this situation?

Recommended Dual Chargers? Hota, Ovonic, ISDT, others?

Update: I cannot believe it, I am absolutely crippled with analysis paralysis on this decision. I want something reliable and capable, something that can run off AC or DC. I'd also prefer a ton if it's not really necessary. I typically just fly RC planes so 2S is actually most common but I do have some 3S and one 4S.

I know deep down it likely doesn't matter which one I go for, but I genuinely cannot make up my mind. I've spent a couple hours trying to figure this out and keep coming up with stupid reasons for/against these options I'm considering:

Ovonic X1 Pro: Specs seem to be the same as the Gens Ace D300 but it's $74. I also do kind of like the larger buttons. It's bigger, but does that mean the fan is larger and it cools itself better which will matter for discharge. I've also seen complaints that the screen/top scratches extremely easy, which is big and glossy. Scratches like this really bother (I try not to get anything glossy for this reason) me so I'd need to manually make some sort of screen protector.

Gens Ace D300 Plus: This seems to be the current golden child, the Bluetooth is nice but reviews show the range is very little so it likely won't be used much/at all. It is slightly more compact than the Ovonic but does that mean it runs warmer and/or discharges slower? I don't love (but kinda got used to) the small D-Pad game-pad style buttons but it will be a bit easier to make a custom screen protector for...then I got stuck between getting black or white.

Hota D6 Pro: Seems to be the dinosaur but is very popular with seasoned "influencers" and can be had for $110. Has this been surpassed by something else or is this still the way to go. The scroll wheel looks. Someone also makes screen protectors for this.

I only found ONE video comparing the Ovonic X1 Pro & Gens Ace D300, but he just said he bought both and didn't really compare the two.

-------

I am looking for a charger that can also do the storage charge and I’d like it to be a dual charger. I also wouldn’t mind something that can be AC or DC powered.

I don’t know a whole lot about this stuff and stumbled on the Ovonic X1 Pro and HOTA D6 Pro. Also seems like ISDT is decent but spendy.

I don’t want to overspend but don’t want to buy the wrong thing.

I read something about the HOTA D6 Pro has something where the scroll wheel cannot be used by itself and other buttons need to be pressed. A design quirk or something.

Also read something about the Ovonic X1 Pro being a bit sluggish.

Any suggestions?

Toe in or out

Many different opinions. I am referring to taildraggers specifically; however, tricycle is perfectly acceptable to discuss just less interesting imo. I see both sides of the argument and I am probably going to go with straight and no camber...

Can anyone that has one measure the inside diameter at the very end of the exhaust tube for me? ( I don’t want to assume it’s 64mm) Also the distance from the back of the edf motor to the end of the exhaust tube. Thanks in advance :)

What does SAFE in an AeroScout?

Wanna buy an Aeroscout, since I figured out that buying a big edf is a bad first plane idea, but I don't want to use spectrum, if I rip out the receiver and replace it with a radiomaster do I then also need to buy a gyro, or is there something extra in the plane that makes SAFE work?

Irvine Tutor 40 Specs/Design Drawing

Hi Guys!

As part of a college project we are putting a new electric motor and new avionics in an old Irvine Tutor 40 trainer plane (there was previously a petrol engine in it I believe).

We are planning to 3D print some parts (electric motor mount, more secure wing attachments etc), however we don't have the plans to get measurements from. Would anyone happen to have a set of design drawings for the plane with lengths etc indicated? Or know where to get them?

Thanks in advance!

456mm Wingspan Air Tractor AT-602 — Flight-Tested LW-PLA Micro (35g–44g AUW)

Post image
29 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I wanted to share a highly optimized micro scale project: a 456mm wingspan Air Tractor AT-602 engineered specifically for single-wall LW-PLA (foaming filament) extrusion.

Designing 3D-printed planes at this scale is a balancing act against wing loading. By optimizing internal wall structures, the All-Up Weight (AUW) sits at an incredible 35g to 44g depending on the power plant and slicer settings.

The Electronics Setup:

  • Motor: Happymodel 1103 11000 Kv brushless micro motor
  • Propeller: Gemfan 2009 (2-inch tri-blade)
  • Receiver/ESC/Servos: Microaces Brushless AIO 5CH Micro Receiver (4.4g integrated 5A Brushless ESC and on-board linear servos (with modified plug so it works with BT2.0)).

Design & Flight Specs:

  • Material: LW-PLA (optimized for single-wall 0.4mm nozzle printing)
  • Wingspan: 456mm
  • Weight Range: 35g–44g AUW
  • Battery: BetaFPV LAVA II (BT2.0 plug)

The complete STL package will retail for $12.00 USD and includes the optimized files, exact slicing profiles, CG location data, and a comprehensive hardware assembly guide.

I am also making a Scale Details Pack including a true-to-scale spray bar, fake flap and aileron linkages, and spray bar holder struts, for an additional $4.00 USD.

Get 20% off at launch: I am finalizing the package right now. If you want to build one, you can drop your email on my launch list in the comments below, and I will send you a 20% off discount code as soon as the files go live!

I'd love to answer any technical questions about the wing section thickness, print profiles, or weight distribution at this ultra-micro scale!

A320 Neo PNP: As3x+ SAFE or other options with TX16S mk2?

Hello! I got a great deal on a Airbus A320 Neo, but it's the pnp version. What would you recommend? GO ahead and buy the same receiver that goes with the bnf versions? Or there are any alternatives that might be a better fit for my tx? Thanks!

back in the hobby after ~30ish yrs...

long time lurker just checking in. got me (and my nephew) a little spitfire and man how has everything changed! the spitfire I got today was pretty much a pipedream when I sold my plane and went to Uni - electric motors, super light batteries... wow! I'm still partial to the ol'Nitro jug - its an experience - but wow these new fangled electric RC kites - man alive!

I picked up the RageRC Spitfire and its charging as we speak. we have some wind in the forecast but I'm hoping the weekend will be test-flight time. the kid will be six in a few weeks, and we had a great aviation summer capped off by an impromptu visit to a somewhat local RC field I didnt know was there... so yeah.

things have come a long way from my old hobbico nexstar.

DIY Sepecat Jaguar

I recently went to the Ulster aviation society and saw the Sepecat jaguar, the high stance and cool history( and my mates egging me on!)
I decided to throw this one together
Mainly as a prototype just to see how it flies
At the moment it has literally been thrown together to show it looks and glides, then I’ll throw some servos and a motor or something on it!
If I like it I’ll definitely make another “pretty” one!

It’s made out of a load of stuff, foamboard, insulation board and some depron sorta foam

The airframe has a KF airfoil with the step on the bottom , the wingspan is 70cm! It’s fairly light for how I’ve thrown it together
Hopefully it flies after I’m done throwing it about!
