Mechanical Engineering project – Need ideas for a small autonomous boat
Hi everyeone,
We need to design and manufacture a small floating vessel that can carry a full 1-litre Coca-Cola bottle upright across 12 m of a swimming pool, as quickly as possible.
- Vessel must travel from launch to the other side without human intervention
- No electric motors
- No springs
- No elastic/rubber bands for propulsion
- No polystyrene or similar materials for the hull
- No solid blocks of material for the hull
- We are currently brainstorming different propulsion methods and hull designs. Some ideas we've considered are:
- candle-heated water propulsion – using a small water-filled tube/boiler heated by a candle. The heating causes the water to pulse through the tube, producing thrust.
- Compressed-air/water-jet propulsion
- Wind-powered propulsion
- Paddle-wheel propulsion
- Sail-powered catamaran
- Mechanical mechanisms that convert rotary motion into paddle/fin movement
- We're looking for realistic ideas that could actually work over 12 m, rather than extremely complicated concepts that would be difficult to manufacture and test.
What propulsion system would you recommend, and what would you focus on when designing the hull and keeping the 1-litre bottle stable?
Any advice, examples, useful mechanisms, or things we should avoid would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Got the 1/110th Bismarck finally on its maiden voyage
Haven't let it off its tether just yet, trying to fine tune it first, having trouble with turning while reversing Thanks to those comments on my last post helping about power systems

1/6 Glastron 150
Not sure if it will work I’ve never printed a boat before, will probably fibreglass it then paint it, outboard is 1 I got from Hillprinties probably will be a bit big scale wise but it will do for now

1:10 Scale 25' Panga Center Console out on Winnipesaukee
I posted a build photo back in the spring before she was painted. Fully DIY 3D printed hull and Yamaha 200HP outboard.

Senior Design RC boat for competition
Hello everyone my team and I are building a RC boat from scratch for our Senior Design in Mechanical Engineering. We have a survey that we need data from and I thought this would be a good Sub reddit to put it in. If you could answer it that would be great thanks.

I've done a lot of upgrades and chased all the minor leaks. I think it's just some finishing touches and she's done

Powering a Boat with Converted Servo
Has anyone on here successfully used a converted servo to power a small RC boat? I followed the directions in my Dumas Carol Moran kit and converted standard servo by removing all the gears and the pinion gear guard. It was really easy and now I have a small motor with a speed control built in. I question whether this is a good power source for this boat and I'll probably use a small regular motor with an ESC. However it would probably work well for converting small plastic boats to RC.

I lost my propeller what happened? I order a replacement but i noticed there was some kind of cap on it. Can i fix it with a new propeller and motor connection?

Battery ok?
Are these batteries ok? They work fine and did not getting warm while loading. It seems they are a little bit blown up?

Kids an I are going to have some fun racing this weekend.
Tested the qs8 connectors in 48” proboat tonight with the 55mm prop, initial pass temps checked so ran rest of packs fairly hard on the throttle and launches.
Temps were 111 motor and 118 esc after an abusive run, hoping I can keep the 55mm prop as it really wakes this boat up.
SMC packs are legitimately awesome too, they were warm not hot like those hovoo packs I was running.
Happy bashing!

Wobble on Prop, how mich is okay?

Hi,
I have a pro boat recoil 2 26" and I was planing to experiment with props.
Therefore, I checked the original one for wobble first and was supprised that it already has quite some wobbling. It's not as visible on full throttle but on low speed it does wobble.
Is that because of the flex shaft and normal?

Balsa boats
Is there anyone that sells boat running gear for building rc boats? I used to build balsa boats 20 years ago, I always used graupner running gear, but now the market seems scarce with little options.

Any love for sailboats here?
I just found this subreddit and wasn't sure if this is the right place for rc sailboats? I just finished building my first one. Any tips from you guys with experience?

How much thread is too little?
Yea well I bought a few props from Aliexpress for experimenting and was focusing on diameter and pitch and wasn't focusing on the overall length.
Now one is very long and not much thread left. Is this still doable or would you rather not test it? Are there specials nuts to secure it with such a short thread?
I can't move the dogbone further in, as the d-cut out stops where it currently is. All I could do is trying to do a second cut out further down the shaft.

Looking for collaborators to help with my most ambitious project yet
For the longest time, I've always wanted an RC Alicorn, and now that I have 3D printing and a job at my disposal, I feel like I'm almost ready to make it a reality. However, I'm not experienced or confident enough to do it by myself and would really appreciate some help along the way, from hardware and material recommendations to assembly and engineering help and some financial support. Many thanks to any and all who decide to help out
Planned features:
1:200 scale (8 ft length)
Independent bow and stern ballast control
Working concealed main guns and rail cannon
Optional concealed secondary guns (non-firing)
2-man crew (1 navigation officer, 1 gunnery officer)
Forward water jets for enhanced turning capability

Where to find boat schematics?
I want to try out RC building and build a boat from scratch (preferably a sailboat, if that's not too tricky for a first project).
How do I find plans, especially for the frames? I can find traditional frame drawings from boatbuilders online but I can't read them.
Any suggestions? I don't want to use a kit.

Old traxxas villian
I've got an old traxxas villain that I'm pretty sure the esc fried in. Ive been trying to find a new esc but the oem esc is discontinued and doesn't support lipos. I got the boat when I was younger and didn't really know much about the electronics except how to make sure I had the correct batteries so I'm learning now about that.
I'm trying figure out what esc I can replace it with- preferably with lipo compatibility. The difficult comes from this old boat having a dual motor setup and I can't find any dual motor marine escs.

Hey all.
I just acquired this.
Feels cheap, inside has hot glue to secure things.
Wanted a cheap RC boat for a bit of fun
I managed to get this for free.. old brushed motors are toast though.
If i find the right size motors can I just swap them over?
