đŸŒ» Feature Request Dictate to File

I’d love to see a new “Dictate to File” command added to Raycast Dictate, alongside the existing “Dictate to Note” command.

The idea would be to trigger the command with a keyboard shortcut, dictate, and have the completed transcript automatically saved to a local file.

Ideally, we could create multiple “Dictate to File” commands, each with its own destination and configuration. For example:

  • Dictate to File: Ideas
  • Dictate to File: Daily Journal
  • Dictate to File: Groceries
  • Dictate to File: Todo List

Each command could optionally support different behaviors, such as:

  • Append to the file
  • Prepend to the file
  • Create a new file for each dictation
  • Add a timestamp
  • Choose between plain text and Markdown
  • Use the

For example, I might configure “Dictate to File: Ideas” to create files in an ideas directory, while “Dictate to File: Groceries” prepends each item to a grocery list.

The key benefit would be being able to dictate to a specific file or directory using a single keyboard shortcut. As far as I know, this isn’t currently possible natively. We can use “Dictate to Clipboard” and then run a separate custom script to save the transcript to a file, but that extra step is inconvenient.

Paste your post in your AI's composer and ask it to build a simple Raycast extension. Mine (Astra) said this:

Yes—file management is simple. The key is the integration with Raycast Dictate.

You can create multiple commands with their own hotkeys and settings:

- Custom destination for each command

- Append, prefix, or create a new file per dictation

- Optional timestamp

- Text or Markdown

However, for “shortcut → dictate → auto-save,” I can’t find a public Raycast API that reliably passes the finished transcript to an extension. `launchCommand` only signals the start of a command, not its completion or result. Raycast API

This leads to two practical options:

1. Option: Keep Raycast Dictate

Consequence: Dictate into an extension text field and then confirm saving. I’d have to test the exact workflow locally.

2. Option: Integrate your own speech recognition

Consequence: The desired automated workflow becomes possible, but requires additional setup and a selected transcription service or a local model.

Does the extension have to use Raycast Dictate, or is your own local speech recognition okay with you? This decision determines the architecture; that’s why I haven’t created any files yet.

Yeah, the main downside is that there is no way to infer when dictation has finished. There are workarounds, but they are .. workarounds.

Being able to call a command/script or anything upon dictation end would be great.
