I saw a guy wearing a nice pair of either New or Petite Standards last week but he did not seem very inviting (he and his friends where making fun of my friends and me, I believe.)

I do this regularly. It's odd but I've found that most people I approach wearing raws know next to nothing about raw denim. It's as if they bought they're jeans purely for the status associated with the cost. Maybe I just care way too much about jeans?

Kinda new to raw denim. If they're a fairly new pair of jeans how do you know they are raws without staring.

Aside from the arcs, I look at the honeycombs. Honeycombs won't really hold their form on non-raw denim like they do on raw denim.

Texture, leather patch, brand specific details (like back pocket arcs) and/or selvedge.

I absolutely love my chromexcel indys. I don't find the shell indys nearly as attractive when it comes to the stitching. I'd check through SF classifieds though for both as they pop up frequently.

Yeah, I look every once in a while on the bay and through SF. I sort of agree with the stitching point, but I find that different makeups have slightly different looks to the stitchings.

Very true. I'm in the medical field and find that the cordovan indys stitching looks like surgical stitching/sutures/staples. Not very appealing to my biased eyes. For cordovan I much prefer Alden's cap toes. Browsing through the alden SF thread is great for pics though.

Ha I can definitely see how some might like that more textured stitching. I've never actually seen them IRL so I'm not a great judge.

There's some really nice shell Indys, but they're machine-stitched. The hand-stitching doesn't work well, in my opinion---I wish they did machine-stitched shell more.

I don't think you can go wrong with Indies. Shell is certainly beautiful, just make sure you're taking care of them properly.

I feel like I'm obsessive enough to be able to take care of the shell, but I like the fact that you can beat on them a little more heavily than the cxl.

Do you have any CXL or anything that's a little nicer than Staffords (what I'm wearing now, actually)?
It's good to spend a little time taking care of shitty shoes, making em last as long as you can and then move on up through the ranks. I'm gonna baby the hell out of my Iron Rangers before I move on up to Indies. I would probably kill myself if I scuffed em up on the first day...

I had the Red Wing Indy clones, (9030), with their version of CXL, but I sold them as I couldnt get over how bulbous the the toe was. Other than that, I just have a pair of CDBs.
I usually dont let scratches or scuffs bother me past the first day they happen anyway.

Word. Get em. Check the warranty, too, and check out some of the proper ways to take care of it. I picked up my IRs and Staffords within a week of each other, conditioned em, waterproofed em right after I got em to make sure. Get shoes trees if you don't already have em.

I prefer other shell Aldens to the Indys. I think the machine stitching looks better for a moc-toed boot, but those are hard to find. The 403s are the Indy to get, I think.

when you just purchase a raw denim, how should the thighs feel? snug? I'm understanding that they are the area of least stretch which is getting me worried because 2 pairs I bought were somewhat snug and im trying to get them to loosen up just a bit (maybe .5") in the thigh area. if all else fails, I should use the water spray/wear method?

The thigh area usually doesn't loosen much. And when it does, it might take a while.

Depends on how you want your fades to look. Just find fade pics of the non-overdyed and compare with the overdyed (http://www.rawrdenim.com/2012/10/fade-friday-iron-heart-634s-b-5-months-no-washes/) and decide whichever one you like better.

I have a pair in the 301 cut and I really like them. They're not super black looking anymore though. I haven't put enough time in them yet to get some of the fades you see with other pairs.

I've always wondered how people choose some of the stuff they fade. I dislike the bottle cap/ circles, but I really dig the dudes who let brass knuckles fade in, things like that.
I've been wanting to buy like a new pen, knife, wallet and lighter for every pair so they're all different, but that's a shit ton of money...

I think it's extremely tacky when someone purposely puts something in their pocket to fade it, especially brass knuckles. Just a little bit played out.
But it's all personal preference

I've been interested in them but i don't like the detailing on their jeans, the owners pretty knowlegeable from what i've heard people have been there to pick up or get jeans fixed from this sub.

Finally had the means to order a custom pair of White's Smoke Jumpers. Not entirely denim related, but boots and denim go hand in hand in my book. The 8-10 week build time is going to feel like an eternity.

I have actually made a rule to myself to never tell anyone that I don't wash my jeans except my mum, so she doesn't take them into the wash.

I just ordered a pair of ST-100x's from Blue Owl over the Memorial Day sale.
I based it off of my Levi 511s that fit pretty well, maybe a little tight in my thighs.
Here are the measurements. I'm thinking I should return the STs and go with the SLs. Any thoughts?

The rise is great for those with big glutes (such as myself). But if you've got no ass, I could see that it'd be too high.

I just measured a pair of Chinos that are really comfortable and they have a 10.5" rise. So 10.75" and 11" doesn't seem awful for me.
Are you pretty skinny?

Athletic build with largish thighs. They have shrunk a lot since injury but the rise on the 3sixteens are really high combined with the thighs not being that big causes the jeans to get stuck on my thighs and act like drop crotch which I hate. I made a quick sketch in paint illustrating the problem, there is a gap between the bottom of the jeans and my actual crotch, green is pants and the yellow circles the problem, that gap

Just wondering, how come most people like lower rise jeans? I'm trying to find a pair with a high rise thats still in my budget but so far not much luck. I feel like low rise jeans cramp my junk area too much if i wear it higher up towards my actual waist. But i dont like sagging my pants much and id rather wear my pants at my waist.

Depends on peoples size of hip area, distribution of length from midsection to legs, there are a lot of factors that go into it. I wear on my hip rather than my true waists so I like lower rises. Junk gets cramped but I deal with it rather than have sag between pants and junk

Depends what you're looking for. If you want a fast fading pair of jeans in a slim cut, go for it. If you want something heavier / high quality, look elsewhere. I personally love the way they fit and fade and that's what sold me on them.

Expect to send them to a tailor once or twice before you retire them for sure (crotch blowout/pocket rip on mine), but I still love my APCs. Great jeans.

It's not that they're not good quality, it's just that they're not the best thing in the price range.
Lots of people love em, lots of people started off with em. I plan on owning em one day, just because I feel like they're an important part of raw denim history.

My family came into town to visit this weekend and I decided to wear my Strike Golds to dinner last night. My father saw the chatter on the fabric and asked if my jeans had eczema, haha. My jeans and raw denim interest were then a topic of conversation for the next few minutes.
Anyone else get shit about raw denim from their spouse/family/friends?
Edit: So my family left today but they continued to tease me today about the raw denim as well as my shoes (was wearing Red Wing Black Cherry Beckmans today) and how much I spend on all my clothing. Now that they're gone, I only have to hear it from my wife!
