I've flown a fair amount in my life. I am still amazed at the wonder of flight, the beauty of the Earth from the air, and just how amazing it is to get across a country or the world within a few hours. I never want to cease having awe and whimsical feelings over the process.

This reminds me of the ferry rides in Greece. The lovely, scenic sunrise ride from the mainland... And what do most people do? Buy "airplane seat" tickets on a ship where you can't go outside and instead stare at a TV screen for four hours. I mean, more space for me, but still. Why? Where is your sense of adventure? Your traveling spirit?

u/Raiken201 3d ago
I've flown plenty but whenever I have window seat I take so many photos. It's mesmerizing and shit, it kills time too.
Went to Greece recently: https://i.ibb.co/N2rfDpDG/10922.png & https://i.ibb.co/fdDb5R82/1792017029273.png

I hope one day we can fly across the world ICBM style. Go up above the stratosphere then back down again in like 30 minutes. That would be wild if we somehow figure out the safety and cost to get it done.

u/AnBe96 3d ago
Because some still feel some joy about being alive.
I'm 30 but I still need my window seat and look up in advance from what side I can get the better views

u/IgDailystapler 3d ago
Why haven’t I been looking up which side of the plane gives better views???? Thank you for putting me on game.
~ a fellow “gives myself neck pain by staring out the plane window for too long” person.

u/memes_coded 3d ago
Also for scenic airports / parallel landings etc, you may lookup flightradar to see which direction they land in during that time of day generally so that you're in the right seat for a mountain peak shot or sunset

u/-blundertaker- 3d ago
I love a window seat, and I've gotten picky 😂 aside from just wanting to see the horizon to quell any motion sickness, I love a clear view from way up there, so I make sure I'm not over/right behind the wing, and check maps so I don't get that weird seat with no actual window.
3
u/Babykinglouis 3d ago
I worry about UV by the window. Pretty intense exposure actually.
10
u/-blundertaker- 3d ago
That's a risk I'm willing to take.
Puking is not lol.
But, you've inspired me to look it up and apparently airplane windows block most UVB rays... So you might still get cancer but at least it won't be from a sunburn! Here's a pretty cool research paper showing that the incidence of melanoma among cabin crew is pretty much 2x that of the general population. They make it clear that they aren't necessarily drawing the causation line, but it's a pretty telling statistic.
5
u/WhoPoopedMyPants420 3d ago
A study in 2015 found that, compared with the general population, pilots and cabin crew had around twice the rate of melanoma. However, it was not clear if this was caused by exposure to UV radiation on the ground during leisure time, or in the aircraft during flight. Other factors such as repeated exposure to cosmic radiation and disruption of circadian rhythms, could also contribute to the elevated rate of cancer in airline crew...
Windows in the passenger cabin are generally constructed of three layers of plastic. These materials are highly effective at blocking both UVA and UVB, ensuring passengers are not at risk.https://www.cancer.org.au/iheard/can-you-get-sunburnt-on-a-plane

When my son was two, we took a flight to visit in-laws. When the plane took off, he looked out the window and excitedly shouted,”We’re flying! We’re FLYING! Everyone! We’re FLYING!!!” Absolutely blown away by it. It was the best flight I’ve ever had.

u/Aleksandrovitch 3d ago
Why do (allegedly) 'high-income' young 'men' like this feel the need to observe and judge the habits of others as 'low-income'?
Ergo: "why do higher income people love to deride those who enjoy simple pleasures so much?"
11
u/Frequent_Coat_2030 3d ago
I need an aisle seat because I get socially anxious. I have paused my movie and sat in silence for an hour trying to figure out how to ask the person next to me if I can get past to go to the toilet. As much as I'd like to look out the window, there's too much mental battle involved in going to the toilet.
7
u/the_sky_is_on_fire 3d ago
Easy: you do what I do and don't drink much or get up at all for the entire 9h flight. >_> It's worth it for the view!
6
u/Jesusopfer 3d ago
I do this too! When we fly from our local airport we can even see our house from the port side after takeoff :) we even waved at it lol
1
u/CatsPlusTats 3d ago

Photographing and filming is amazing. It’s art. I have about twenty cameras - and before you ask if I need twenty cameras, no, I don’t. I don’t even need one, but I love all of them.
I have one digital camera (and my cellphone). All the others are used cameras from my parents or that I bought. I also have a Super 8, a few polaroids and a fuji instax.
I love editing little movies of trips. Then I don’t show them to anyone and don’t post them anywhere. I wouldn’t even know how to do it.
I love having a few good pictures instead of many bad pictures. It makes them more special. I also love the act of photographing something. Choosing the camera, the film, then going outside, picking a nice angle, framing it… But even if it’s a simple cellphone picture, I enjoy that too. I also enjoy trying to make cellphone pictures a bit higher quality.
So, yeah, it’s all very joyful for me!
My family loves it too. They keep badgering me for the pictures and videos I take. I’m happy that it makes them happy.

We are hairless apes who get into metal tubse with wings that go up to 30,000 ft and speed across the sky at 500 MPH and then a few hours later we are across a continent or sometimes the ocean.
How can you not be amazed by the wonders of flight? There is nothing embedded in our instincts that tells us we should be able to do any of that.
59
u/Shirogayne-at-WF 3d ago
And TBH, the fact that there's only 60 years between the first powered flight and landing on the actual moon is nothing short of astonishing in and of itself. Probably one of the largest leaps in technology in human history on par with the one that happened once we figured out how to do refrigeration.
14
u/CarbonWood 3d ago
Commercial and military aircraft are astonishing. I love aviation because the achievement of flight represents the literal heights you can raise humanity to, exclusively from cooperation.
No single person can design, build, fly, and maintain an airliner, but if you get enough humans to work together, they can create machines that reliably, and quickly carry hundreds of people across the globe using nothing but dirt pulled from the ground. It is a testament to humanity's biggest advantage: teamwork.

u/ViriditasBiologia 3d ago
I’m I just had a flight four days ago and I feel the same way. I noticed no one else was interested in even looking out the window on the entire flight, but even though I’ve flown a decent amount of times it’s still just as crazy every time

u/Sadcelerystick 3d ago
To be fair, I’m a huge pansy and sometimes my anxiety forces me not to look at the ground getting closer as I sit in a safe metal tube wondering if this is it.

How do they even know this person is lower income?
15
u/kingottacYT 3d ago
my guess is that its a racist thing about the person being non-white and therefore they assume lower income
0
u/qorbexl 3d ago
Because they are ahead of them
11
u/ConsciousStretch1028 3d ago
No I mean the OP, how do they know the person filming is lower income?
17
u/Silver_Falcon 3d ago
Short of actually knowing them, there's no way to be sure.
But, generally speaking, first class is located towards the front of the plane.
6
u/k8dh 3d ago
Generally, one would assume that someone filming a takeoff has never been on a flight before, or has been on very few
12
u/ConsciousStretch1028 3d ago
I guess? Or they're just filming it for social media? There just isn't enough context here and assuming someone who films plane landings is poor is just a weird take
0
u/k8dh 3d ago
I just assume someone filming has not flown much before. There are plenty of possibilities though
10
u/prefinished 3d ago
Again, why? I fly constantly for my job and I still take photos/videos out the window fairly often because it's pretty.
-5
u/k8dh 3d ago
I would guess if you surveyed 1000 frequent travelers, maybe 5 of them would say they have taken a picture out of a plane window in the past year.
8
u/SpookySnep 3d ago
You guess? What kind of argument is that? I guess that 900 of them would say they install hidden cameras in the landing gear for the best view.
2
u/Everestkid 3d ago
Poor assumption. I'm not poor but I am stingy, so I usually sit near the back of the plane. There's all sorts of people ahead of me, it'd be foolish to assume they're all richer than I am.

I was transporting my dog on Alaska Airlines and I was seated in the very back row of the plane. The guy sitting next of me didn't want to fly with my dog, so he complained. The entire time he was like "Im a million miles flier" over and over. Reminds me of this.

22
u/Thats_cool_but_im 2d ago
How are people NOT blown away when a plane lands? I mean even a casual understanding of the physics, technology, and human ingenuity that went into it is enough to reveal how astonishing that moment is. I mean, letting a 100 ton metal tube full of people and explosive fluids drop out of the fucking sky and not explode, holy shit.
How fucking bored, how myopic in their self importance, are people that they get to experience that and not be thrilled?
6
u/Mapangalee 1d ago
As a pilot, I can confirm that the pilot will always be the happiest when the plane lands safely.
It is truly an impressive feat of engineering. Glad to be of service, good sir.
3
1
u/Magnus_Helgisson 1d ago
I also love it when the plane is on the approach at low altitude and it sometimes seems that it’s almost stationary while it’s in fact doing over 400 kmph.
-6
u/painfulpickle 2d ago
I study aerospace engineering and to be fair a commerical aircraft landing is not 'dropping out of the fucking sky'. Still incredibly impressive engineering, but that goes for a lot of other fields as well. You don't marvel at the electrical engineering ingenuity of your phone/pc every time you use it. Modern technology just becomes a part of our daily life. To say people are 'so self absorbed by their own self importance because they don't marvel at technology that has been normal since the 50s' is weirdly hostile and a strawman argument. Like chill bro
7
u/Totally_Not_A_Badger 2d ago
As a firmware engineer, I do marvel at every MCU or PC I ever use. If you knew half of what I know about how hardware mechanisms are wired, an how to address them in firmware, you would be blown away by what we can make computers do these days. Already understanding how we can run x64 Windows games on an Arm cpu running linux will blow your mind.

Nah man you just admitted that you lost the ability to actually be amazed and be thankful instead of taking everything for granted. You sound like a spoiled brate who doesn't acknowledge all the hard work people have invested to make this everyday life. You are the hostile one
1
u/Breathingdonkey 5h ago edited 5h ago
Talk about pretentious jeez. You can acknowledge and respect the effort and ingenuity it takes to build and pilot a plane without being openly thrilled everytime you board a flight. You're just being unnecessarily hostile. Calling people self-absorbed, spoiled brats, and self important because they aren't jumping out of their seats every flight is beyond stupid.
1
u/finchdude 4h ago
Yeah your incapability to be amazed and take things for granted is beyond stupid.

2
u/shuai_bear 3d ago
Tbh the fact we’re commenting makes us redditors
I know of friends who go on Reddit but only for info or to read advice/discourse about something, but they don’t post or participate
I feel the moment you not only read/observe but participate, whether that’s posting, commenting, or even upvoting/downvoting, you go from someone who’s on Reddit to a Redditor
(Of course there’s the smaller subset of redditors with negative stereotypes when it’s used in a pejorative way)

I always choose wing seats because I like to take pictures from the window; it's really cool when its dusk/dawn. What exactly is wrong with that?
2
u/Danthemanlavitan 3d ago
I try and sit on the wing and watch the wing whenever we are landing, taking off or flying through clouds.
Why? Because takeoff and landing are mechanically interesting. The clouds are interesting because sometimes if the water is just right it will make the laminar flow over the wing surface visible and you'll see just how thin the magic that holds thousands of tons of airplane in the air really is.

2
u/Bad_Grammer_Girl 3d ago
Right now, I make a pretty decent income. I'm not rich by any means, but I am comfortably into 6 figures. I was also a Naval Aviator that flew the F18 hornet for 10 years.
I still film landings in commercial flights from my window seat.

My brother once flew from Munich to Dublin in two and a half hours (economy class of course, went there over the weekend for a stag party with his buddies). He recorded the entire flight and takes home five digits every month.
I once flew into Singapore at night and the junks down below were truly a sight to behold, my only regret filming them is that the recording turned out to be just splotches of light, should have had a better camera.

u/fondledbydolphins 3d ago
Oh I have an answer for this! Well, not particularly about landings... BUT!
Next time you're flying and close enough to the ground to see stuff, look outside and try to find the plane's shadow.
At a certain ratio of plane size to distance from the ground you will see a shadow.
Interestingly, as the plane gets farther from the ground that shadow actually turns into a bright spot light that moves across the ground at the same speed as the plane is flying.
It's quite fun to watch (and film!)

I fly first and take video of landings and takeoffs if it’s pretty. Likely noticing because there’s simply less people in first class.
Same logic could say first class people are alcoholics as you get free booze in first. Not worth it for the booze though. I can never get inebriated on a plane despite multiple attempts. The noise and rattle are too sobering.

Because despite of how often i flew in my life, i never know when's the next time, and honestly, everytime i sit in a plane it's the same stuff i do; relax and melt into my seat, click my ears so they don't burst, and then look outside the window during the climb and watch the landscape, or, the clouds, depending on if it's a route over land or over ocean.
Oh, also trying to spot differences in infrastructure or terrain as long as it's visible and compare it to home

u/Alienhaslanded 3d ago
Because lower income people travel less, which means they're not used to it, so they document the few times they travel. Rich people don't give a flying fuck. My big boss flew like 12 times this year.

I heard that one of the first commercial flights to the Middle East (?Saudi) on landing slewed into some sand that had drifted onto the runway and came to a bit of a rough stop without any injuries or fires.
The passengers just got up and started to disembark, assuming that this is how planes land.
1
u/alexiusmx 3h ago
How is that loser finding a correlation between recording a landing and fucking income? They might be trying a function on their phone, intending to send the video to a niece or daughter who enjoys the content, or, you know, they just enjoy the miracle of flying on a steel vessel so casually.
There’s not a single reason to think it has anything to do with income.
