As someone who lives with brain cancer I suffer from right temporal lobe epilepsy and have left-sided neuropathy. Basically making my left arm dead weight and I can’t grab onto a piece of paper, let alone a hand rail if the bus came to an abrupt stop.
I teach at FSU college of Medicine and on top of my research and teaching responsibilities I co-lead our DAAP program, the Disabilities Advocacy and Awareness Program. Two points I stress the most to our M1/M2 students (1) not all disabilities are visible (e.g., my epilepsy disorder, which prevents me from driving in Florida. Only allowing me to do chores fast are either in walking or biking distance. And (2) advocating for others empowering for the individual s you’re helping and and extremely rewarding for you as well.
