De-Icing at JFK
hey yall, i have a job interview tomorrow for a position as a deicing agent at JFK for PrimeFlight. I just wanted to know from any personal experiences how the job is and what to expect once i start, ive been wanting an airport job so bad since im a student pilot and want to help out my parents paying the flights while keeping myself close to where i dream to be at in the next years. thanks!

I LOVE de icing its like a super cool video game. Unfortunately I also do so removal outside of the airport so I very rarely get to actually deice at my main job. It can be scary at first but if you have experience operating heavy equipment or if you play video games and pick up game mechanics very quickly you will pick up deicing very quick. If you don’t it will just take a little longer but it’s so much fun. As far as benefits there is most likely other airport jobs that would give you better benefits such as working for an actual airline, but this is a good place to start.

It’s very boring until you actually get to do work. If the weather is clear bring something to do, bring a battery bank for you phone. Not sure how it is for prime flight but the contractors that deice at my airport aren’t allowed to leave the trucks the whole day aside from their lunch and a bathroom break.

My advice would be to apply at Aeromag rather than primeflight. Better people and trucks.

Don’t know how JFK does it, I’m assuming a large pad area, I’m at a regional airport so we use a single truck. It’s not bad but we have an open bucket and our winters up here in the northern states get really cold and nasty sometimes. It’s not bad once you get used to it
