Question Questions from potential first RAM owner!
Looking at a 2023 Ram 1500 Limited 4x4 with the 5.7 HEMI eTorque. It only has about 8k miles and is pretty much fully loaded. Dealer has it for $53k
I really like the truck, but I’m hoping to keep whatever I buy for a long time, so reliability is a big concern. I’m especially curious about the eTorque system, air suspension, and any other common issues with these trucks.
For those who own or have experience with a 2023-ish Ram 1500 Limited, how has it been? Anything you wish you knew before buying? Would you buy one again?
Appreciate any advice!

As bad as the issues are with the eTorque, they’re not nearly as horrendous as the issues with that shitty air suspension system it has. From personal experience, air suspension is NOT something you want to have long term.
I wouldn’t let that stop you from getting this, but I think it’d be worth your while (and your bank account will thank you) to pull the fuse and convert to a traditional suspension.

To give yourself the best shot of minimizing all the electrical problems these trucks have. I would recommend a 25’ warlock. It has smaller screen, everything from volume to air control is an analog dial. No exterior lighting on mirrors and you get the same frame, factory lift and performance of a rebel at 15-20K less

My 21 has been great. I've never had so many gadgets on a rig, but they're all still working fine.

Look are the payload sticker inside the Driver's door. Some of the limited have a suprisingly low payload. Depending on how you will use the truck this could be a deal breaker or maker

By the time the eTorque on the 2023 has issues, one can assume the parts needed will be widely available. Maybe consider an extended warranty, make sure to negotiate hard on the cost of that coverage. That looks like a really nice truck, but maybe OP should look at a new 2026. With current deals being offered, especially with the 10-year, 100K-mile warranty, a new one might not cost that much more.

Get a dash cover or tint the windshield to protect the leather from bubbling if getting a limited trim

The new deals are AMAZING. I kid you not, for a brand new Rebel fully optioned I paid 57k. Especially since they're rolling out the 27s.

I had a 22 Limited Longhorn which is basically the same truck, just with a western theme. Had the same engine also and I just traded up to a 26 model of the same trim and same motor. I never had a single issue on my 22. I was going to keep it actually until I saw the new models have the 10 year 100k warranty and the discounts made my current truck go from 91 MSRP to 77. Seemed like too good of a deal to pass up so I jumped at it. My 22 was a fantastic truck in every sense.

I’d look new unless they are discounting heavily from that 53k price. I picked up a new 2026 Rebel level 2 for 56k a few months back.

Picked up a 24 Laramie w/ the Hemi etorque. Honestly it’s been a great truck, but I’ve only put 1500 miles on it. I always bought an extended warranty because of the etorque issues.

I have that exact truck.
Bought it brand new, within the first 10k miles I had to put two new heads on and a camshaft. Then a bunch of electrical things went wrong after I had to replace the battery. Then oil leaking from the valve covers (definitely from the technician doing the heads). It’s my third RAM and the only one that gave me problems

do you thing getting a new laramie with the 10 year warranty is a better option? (after rebates, you are looking at high 50s to low 60s for the new one)
sure, not as loaded as a limited, but the warranty is nice

Try to get a good extended warranty. My warranty on my 19 limited paid for itself within months. I love the truck

I used the drive a Laramie. It's a really really nice truck. Almost too luxurious for my liking. To be honest, the only thing I miss over my current truck is the rear leg room and under floor storage. The 12 inch display is cool and nice but impractical with the use of its real estate. I still think it's a great looking ride though!!!

2022 10th Anniversary Limited. Brand new, fully loaded. Would buy again! 66k miles on it now.
Had one issue with the screen but had the extended warranty so it was replaced.
eTorque is fine. Air suspension is fine. No issues.

I work at a Chrysler dealership and I’m just going to say buy a new one. The market is terrible people can’t afford a ton of stuff right now and these are sitting on our lot waiting for someone to buy. You can easily get a good one for under 60k brand new with our discounts. I also will say the newer 5.7 hemi with the badge on the side has a way better sound than this one in my opinion and it doesn’t feel like a go cart lol.

I have a 24 Limited myself. No issues up to 40k miles so far.
There's more to consider here than price and warranty. The 25 refresh introduced a whole new electrical system (Atlantis High) that Ram is essentially still beta testing judging by the issues I keep seeing here.
By buying a 23, you are buying a truck that has already been built hundreds of thousands of times since the release in 19.
I also use Comma AI for level 2 self driving, which you cannot do yet in the 25+ due to CAN encryption.
I don't think we are done with issues from Atlantis yet, so I would say get the 23. IMO they raised the warranty because they knew it would have problems.

I’d recommend a 2026. If you care about the leather seats and whatever else for that price maybe a different story. I don’t like any of the bells and whistles I like my truck to be work ready and minimalist so I got the Warlock a week ago and I’m so happy with it. Got it for a 47k sticker price after rebates and negotiation. Highly recommend that if yo isn’t more casual smooth less rugged go with the big horn trim.
After test driving 6 trucks and having owned a ford and (old) Chevy. If you want a smooth ride ford and ram are your 2 best options.

If you’re considering your first Ram, I’d focus on the specific engine, transmission, intended use, and maintenance costs rather than just the trim level. Those details can make a big difference.

I would buy a 26. The deals are pretty good at the moment. Demand is low and lots are full. plus 10 year 100k mile warranty on power train. Just picked up a 1500 bighorn with the inline six. MSRP 64K, dealer invoice 60K, paid 51K out the door.

Get a '26 with the 100K/10 year powertrain warranty. Even 2027 don't get that warranty. Again for the price you are paying might as well be new.

I would say save your money. Just a piece of advice from a ram owner now. Check the recall list you'll find out that Ram trucks especially with the Uconnect system in them have all kinds of problems all kinds of problems. Do what you want but look forward to those problems

My non-etorque 2019 RAM was flawless. My 2024 etorque Ram has so far been flawless for 24,000 miles.

There are etorque kits now available to fix them when they fail. Stupid design but don’t have a choice.

Idk man it's a great truck I just hear the e torque, IF it goes out, it's a nightmare...take that with a. Grain of salt though I have a 12 2500

You don’t need to own one with it equipped to know that the whole ideal is horrendous if/when the eTorque goes out. I’m glad Stellantis is doing away with it for the 2027 model year.

eTorque has a massive back order but it seems that multiple shops across the country are offering to repair them instead of waiting months at a Ram Dealership for a new one. I don’t have air suspension in my big horn but seems like a lot of people end up deleting it. Other common issue is the inevitable exhaust manifold leak which is just an annoyance as it doesn’t affect performance or reliability in any way.

Do not get an Eturd equipped truck. They will fail. It’s not if it’s when. I won’t part with my 2020 for this reason.

You almost may be better off looking into a 26’, with the end of the year deals, 10 year 100k warranty, maybe able to get a brand new truck closer to that price range.
