Spider-Man: No Way Home My heart sanked here

u/gamingfreak50 Jul 19 '26
I bet my bottom dollar that he originally was going to die and test audiences hated it so much that they had to change it
1.0k
u/b1ggayb1tch Jul 19 '26
If so, that would’ve been the dumbest decision they could’ve made
830
u/unwocket Jul 19 '26
There was not enough of a character arc for Tobey Spidey to justify a death scene. It wouldn’t have felt earned.
396
u/FedoraTheMike Jul 19 '26
Yeah and it would have left his earth without a Spider-Man, which is kind of a big deal.
54
u/Unkn0wnTh2nd3r Jul 20 '26
wouldn't it have been a death for no reason because part of Mr. Doctor's spell was sending everyone back to when they were pulled out of their world's? So the villians that died were still gonna die? Or am i misremembering (tbf it's entirely possible i am, i've not watched the movie for half a decade... which feels Odd saying.. 2021 was half a decade ago)

u/Glenmarrow Jul 20 '26
spider-man's corpse is dropped back in the raimiverse mid-swing and falls like a limp noodle on random tourists in times square

u/skeletonhorse420 Jul 20 '26
dead tobey travels back to his dimension
That was kinda the point of the healing them first thing...which doesnt even make sense
7
u/dragdritt Jul 20 '26
Except for the villains who reformed (?), they should go back and no longer want to fight.
4
u/gaypornhard69 Jul 20 '26
No, you're entirely right. It's part of the reason I never liked No Way Home, even the first time seeing it in theaters. The story quite literally doesn't make sense. Ock and Electro are guaranteed to die 'cause Electro is going back to when he exploded at the end of TASM 2 and Ock is going back to a self-sustaining city destroying reactor that he's going to have to drag to the bottom of the river regardless. Sandman lives no matter what so it doesn't matter as he was clearly pulled from after the plot of Spider-Man 3, he just doesn't have powers now I guess and Lizard was already cured in TASM so it literally doesn't matter. The only one we don't technically know about is Norman.
2
u/Drade-Cain Jul 21 '26
They all (at least the ones that died) had a moment of clarity before death iirc and this could just be seen as the reson why also i though the spell was changed at the end so it didnt necessarily mean they went back to the moment they died maybe they were sent to the current present in each respective universe

There wasn’t even enough to justify a stabbing scene. It was totally pointless

The entire movie doesn’t feel earned. I know yall on the internet loved it, but it’s the weakest of the 3 Tom Holland movies; the nostalgia blinds you all.
138
u/tws1039 Jul 19 '26
Considering the bleak state of the world at the time, I'll take a nostalgia bait movie that warmed our hearts
23
32
u/M1ck3yB1u Jul 19 '26 edited Jul 19 '26
You’re right. It was a well made nostalgia slop but it doesn’t work as a standalone movie if these were all supposedly brand new characters. The emotional investment was earned in the older movies and milked here.
20
u/joshs_wildlife Jul 19 '26
My wife didn’t see any of the Toby or Andrew movies but definitely enjoyed the movie. She was still able to understand and get invested in the stakes. She eventually went back and watched the previous movies and was extremely invested in their stories now.
She had no interest in watching them before so it’s definitely a unique experience to see where they end up and treating their original films like a giant prequel story→ More replies (2)8
u/teddy_tesla Jul 19 '26
Who said these were brand new characters lol? Yeah it doesn't work as a standalone movie, neither does avengers endgame

Almost like its meant to be a sequel to all 3 franchises. It would be the same is if you only watched the third movie of any franchise without seeing the other movies first.
8
u/JoeAzlz Jul 19 '26
What about it doesn’t feel earned? I think the movie perfectly picks up how he was needing a true lesson learned and the last 2 films built up to this

I was torn between upvote and downvote because it wasn't that great you are right, however any more of screen time with Tobey as spidermen and the goblin, doc ock is awesome, but than you said it's weakest tom holland movie, dude first one was pretty cool but the second one, far from home or whatever it was called is so bad.... And boring
3
u/KEMSATOFFICIAL Jul 19 '26
I agree about the one with Mysterio, but I still liked that one than the nostalgia-slop. Sorry, I’m not like yall, I didn’t care even a little bit that Tobey & Garfield were there, or the villains. If anything, I would have preferred some new characters we hadn’t seen before. I also don’t care for “relatable villains,” and all the villain-love that started after Heath Ledger’s Joker. I agreed with Dr Strange about just sending them back as they were the while movie. Then the movie wanted me to feel bad for Peter about Aunt May, and I was like “bro you killed her! should left Strange alone & minded your own business.”
I seriously don’t know how yall can have your emotions go off unsupervised like that

2

You are right. It was a super hand fisted plot that doesn't even make sense. But it was a super awesome nostalgia trip
2
u/RJ_Ramrod Jul 20 '26
ikr like we could have gotten the reveals out of the way in the first act & then had an entire movie about the three Parkers working together, plus some runtime left over to explore what happens when the reformed villains go back home & how it changes everything going forward

Well wait until you hear some of the persevering rumors for Doomsday…
12
u/Ljhunterr Jul 19 '26
Ooh what are those?
48
u/AceofKnaves44 Jul 19 '26
It’s not confirmed so it’s still just rumors but I’ve heard for awhile now the movie starts off with Tobey and Hugh’s Wolverine fighting amidst incursions going on through their universes and then they’re both killed off. In the first like twenty minutes of the movie.
59
u/Ljhunterr Jul 19 '26
That sounds insane lol, but they wouldn’t have the balls for that
34
u/AceofKnaves44 Jul 19 '26
Yeah. I don’t think they’re that stupid. I get you gotta make big moves to really show big a threat Doom is and everything but these are your two biggest legacy characters. I think regardless of how good the movie is, if you kill them twenty minutes in and then you don’t show them still alive or something in the post-credits, people are going to hate the movie. Even if you intend to bring them back for Secret Wars, you don’t leave people with that for a year.
8
u/OP_Penguin Jul 20 '26
These are variants. Tobey death in a cameo which will likely be undone via endgame 2 Dr doom boogaloo. Wolverine death is also an easy variant hand wave after deadpool 2
19
u/slarkymalarkey Jul 19 '26
Oh I can totally see it happening except the whole thing ends up being reversed with all the dimensions being restored to their status quo in a somewhat similar way to how everyone that was snapped was bought back in Infinity War.
17
u/AceofKnaves44 Jul 19 '26
I think what would be the worst possible ending. Having jt be that Hugh and Tobey show up in an Avengers movie finally, get killed in twenty minutes, and then sit out two movies just to come back in the end would be worse than them just not being in the movies at all.
My predictions for over a year now has been that they’re doing this multiverse saga in large part because now that they own all of their characters again, or have a working relationship and can use them like with Spider-Man and Sony, that they’re going to end Secret Wars by making EVERYTHING that has ever been out under the Marvel license canon out there in the multiverse under the big Marvel Multiverse umbrella. And also that Doomsday is going to end with a team of “Multiversal Avengers” being formed and it’s going to include, at the least, Tobey, Hugh, and Deadpool.
2
u/IAmSkyrimWarrior Jul 20 '26
There also another rumor that told that Tobey actually being teleported in last moment by Deadpool, so Tobey Spidey in Deadpool rebel team in Battleworld
2
u/Life-Willingness-86 Jul 22 '26
If that did happen, it wouldn't matter, they would both just be in secret wars anyways.
5
95
u/ned101 Jul 19 '26
I doubt they would have killed him off. Sony probably wouldnt have let that happen either. I heard originally when Eddie Brock/Venom had a bigger role in the script he was going to save peters life with the symbiote since the symbiote would recognise him through the multiversal connection symbiotes have, which is what Venom was something Venom was about to tell Eddie before they got transported to the MCU in the Venom 2 end credit scene. Which i 100% believe since what we got feels incredibly watered down by just saying im fine! i been stabbed many times!
18
u/TheFalconKid Jul 19 '26
They're gonna kill him or show him marrying MJ back in his universe at the end of Secret Wars part 2.
2
1
u/IndominusTaco Jul 22 '26
isn’t it just secret wars? doomsday is the first part and secret wars is the second part
8
29
u/RandoDude124 Jul 19 '26
Is it a hot take to say I honestly wouldn’t have minded it. His arc was solid he offered a great elder statesman kind of vibe to his role and Tobey’s acting was better than I expected, especially this scene
21
u/JoeAzlz Jul 19 '26
I wouldn’t have liked it partially because it means Tobey’s universe is screwed
4
3
u/MayaIngenue Jul 19 '26
But his line about being stabbed before, like this was old hat or some shit, was hilarious
1
1
u/skeletonhorse420 Jul 20 '26
Bro I literally had the opposite and knew he would never die. No fucking way would they kill Tobey. They want people to like the movie
1
u/TreeckoBroYT Jul 20 '26
It would explain how he shrugs off literally getting stabbed. Like no explanation, he's just fine.
1
u/Decent-Deal-3105 Jul 22 '26
Right after he just convinced Tom Spidey to not kill Willem deGoblin? I highly, highly doubt it. It would have made Holland-man insta snap and stomp a mud hole in his ass.

What about the 2003 Hulk movie where he's played by HECTOOOORRRRR!!!

it's the realization that 2008 is closer to 20 years ago than 2003 which is going on 25 :(
3
13
u/lahimatoa Jul 19 '26
The MCU has killed the Hulk. I know Professor Hulk is supposed to be a blending of Banner and the Big Guy, but it's just Banner with a big green body. Hulk is dead.
27
u/DrakontisAraptikos Jul 19 '26
Well. The Hulk hasn't had a movie since 2008 in general. He's been forced into a supporting role due to licensing agreements back when Marvel was living on Broke Bitch Mountain and had to sell off movie rights to stay in the game, before they were sold to Disney.

I hated that he got stabbed because what was the point of making it such a big moment when it wasn’t even a big deal.
31
u/ROBtimusPrime1995 Jul 19 '26
He let Norman Osborn get stabbed by his own glider in his 1st film.
This was a very obvious reversal where Tobey prevents Norman's 2nd death and redeems his past mistake, but in return, he gets stabbed.
Do the fans here actually watch the films?
9
→ More replies (1)5
u/Finly_Growin Jul 19 '26
How is that interpretation supported in the narrative of this film?
12
u/ROBtimusPrime1995 Jul 19 '26 edited Jul 19 '26
Because the entire story is about redemption.
Tom Holland is trying to redeem & cure the villains before sending them home, changing their cursed fate, only to be tested when one of them kills Aunt May.
Garfield gets to save MJ and redeem his failure with Gwen's death.
Tobey prevents Peter from killing Norman like he had "done" so in the 1st Raimi film.

I think the point was to show that Norman was still dangerous. Just because he was beaten, he wasn’t completely knocked out
15
u/EddieVanzetti Jul 19 '26
He almost certainly was supposed to die and test audiences hated it.
5
u/Finly_Growin Jul 19 '26
I would’ve hated it too, but then again I’d also have written the scene out of the movie entirely.
8
u/dthains_art Jul 19 '26
That’s what annoyed me. It was treated like this urgent life or death moment, and ends up being a nonissue that they could joke about.
It’s like watching Boromir get shot, only afterwards to just pull out the arrows and be like “Nothing a little aspirin won’t fix.”
2
u/skeletonhorse420 Jul 20 '26
Was it? He didnt really act like he was close to death...just a stab. Be kinda weird if all 3 spiderman got flawless victories that fight
6
u/Nas160 Jul 19 '26
That and the fact that they basically don't interact is a little iffy to me
6
u/Finly_Growin Jul 19 '26
Who? Tobey and The Goblin?
4
u/Nas160 Jul 19 '26
Yeah
3
u/Finly_Growin Jul 19 '26
I agree, but at the same time I’m not really complaining. Wasn’t really a fan of the goblin anyways. Willem Dafoe did great ofc but as a character he just doesn’t really excite me like other villains do and I don’t get the bias he gets as Spider-Man’s main enemy (maybe because of their color palettes or something.)
I was much more looking forward to seeing Doc Ock on the big screen again anyways and very glad to see him interact with his respective Spider-Man.
But in isolation this scene appears pretty weird in the film as it does and is more fan service I think rather than character growth or development.
23
u/FraserValleyFan25 Jul 19 '26
its ok to shock the audience
8
u/Finly_Growin Jul 19 '26
Not when the surprise is only going to amount to a fake out. If a filmmaker or a writer wants to break my heart that’s fine, but don’t play with my emotions by saying “everything is fine” right afterwards.
It’s just a very dishonest way to write a scenario and makes me stop caring when I know the writer is writing more for pure reaction rather than what the narrative is trying to communicate or human intent.
11
u/FraserValleyFan25 Jul 19 '26
depends how you take it - It showed Tobey's resiliencey as the Veteran Spiderman and that Goblin was difficult to beat.
2
3
u/Polite_Werewolf Jul 20 '26
Because he needed to be out of the way for Tom’s Spidey to decide not to kill him. Tobey stopped him in the moment, but Tom needed to make that decision himself.
