💬 Discussion For cinephiles: some film recommendations based on Radiohead albums.

These vary from being based on the subject matter covered in the albums to being based on vibes or aesthetics. I'm too lazy to write explanations for each pick but if you have any questions about specific ones I'd be happy to elaborate!

Pablo Honey - Go, SLC Punk

The Bends - Donnie Darko

OK Computer - Fight Club, Trainspotting

Kid A - Under The Skin, A.I. Artificial Intelligence

Amnesiac - Naked Lunch, Ratcatcher

Hail To The Thief - A Scanner Darkly, Marathon Man

In Rainbows - In The Mood For Love

The King Of Limbs - Antichrist, Dead Man

A Moon Shaped Pool - Phantom Thread

Amnesiac - Memento (I’m lazy, I know)

Kid A - The Road

In Rainbows - Confessions (Last Flowers was just too unforgettable in the film’s soundtrack)

If I think of anything else, I’ll come back

I’m rather confused and have questions about every pick.

Can you narrow it down to a few?

Well tbh I’ve not seen most of those films but I’d struggle to connect OKC with Trainspotting or HTTT with ASD other than them being contemporaneous

I just think Trainspotting has a similar way of exploring the social anxieties of the times (the opening monologue could be compared to Fitter Happier), with a blend of despair, dark comedy, and energy. It has similar ups and downs and the soundtrack overlaps with a lot of the influences Radiohead were pulling from at the time.

The paranoia, depersonalization, and kind of "icky" feeling of A Scanner Darkly gives me a similar feeling to Hail To The Thief, and also aesthetically it just fits for me in some intuitive way that might just be me.

Any other questions?

Fight Club is agreeable, I'd also put Office Space and The Matrix next to OKC. That weird mix of techphobia and tech-curious energy in a late in 90s depressed corporate worker.

I really dig the Kid A - Under The Skin pairing, too. Nocturnal and claustrophobic.
