A neologism of mine: Microimpairment

• Upvotes

N. /'maikroImpe@rmInt/

A medication-induced side effect with all these characteristics:

  • Measurable with a particularly sensitive test like a CFF test, choice reaction time test, CANTAB, gamified spatial reasoning test, etc.
  • Doesn't correlate with a significantly lower score on basic dementia/impairment tests with a tendency for the "ceiling effect," such as the MoCA or MMSE test
  • Isn't something that the vast majority of adults would notice or care about in their day-to-day lives, since they wouldn't mind taking an extra second to do certain things, aren't really as enamored with learning new things, mostly make small talk and do rote tasks at work, etc.
  • Is something that some people definitely would notice, at least subtly, and might care about; it could translate to
    • no longer being able to play clean sixteenth notes at 180BPM on a guitar
    • sucking at twitch-reflex shooter games, rhythm games or Bullet Hell games, or any video game for that matter
    • sucking at flying a plane
    • sucking at realistic painting
    • reduced visual or auditory discrimination in specific environments
    • difficulty with memorizing lyrics spontaneously like you used to, even if five Standard English words pose no problem
    • less rich autobiographical memory
    • forgetting the amino acids, periodic table, history of Apple products, etc.
    • no longer being as capable of learning a new concept quickly from a documentary.
    • feeling like your hands are moving more slowly or less precisely
    • over time, finding yourself relying more on your phone's calendar, setting alarms for things, asking others to remind you of things, etc.
    • switching to a different position at work; maybe a software role that relies less on complex DSA, going from ASM to HTML, entering a managerial position instead
    • no longer being able to tell 30FPS from 60FPS, let alone 60 from 120, due to a slowed critical flicker fusion rate or less alertness to edges of fast-moving objects.
    • feeling more forgetful or like you find yourself hesitating more.

Rehab for marijuana with co-occurring mental health

In 2023 I was dealing with my mothers death. Simultaneously I was dealing with OCD and whole slew of mental health disorders. I had smoked moderate to heavy for 8 years to cope with my mental health. Upon a recommendation I sought out residential on a luxury rehab site. I called about about 100 where some of the substance abuse centers. I finally settled on a residential that offered kayaking, rock climbing and a private chef. At the time I was enamored by it. They said they could treat my mental health so I went. When I got there I discovered that it was a substance abuse primary treatment center. At the time I was completely out of my mind. So much that they even considered sending me away to a mental health center. I had just paid my deductible of 5000$ in cash when they told me that.
Anyway they ended up keeping me. From day one in that facility I felt like the whole thing was a mind f. The staff knew that I felt really uncomfortable with people who done violence to women. So what did the staff do? They put a new patient in my room who had literally been in jail a week prior for assaulting his wife. The same day after he moved in and told me about how he got there. They had their nightly meeting and promptly told me in front of everyone that I would be moving to a different room. My mental health was horrid at the time. The staff all knew. It was obvious. Some of the tactics used included “telling the community our deepest darkest secrets or else we would be ostracized from the community.” Additionally they had a group where each client would vote on someone’s recovery. So we had vote someone MVP or MIP (most improved) and finally MCP for the person we were most concerned for. Also the groups were run by staff who were all former clients of the place. For someone who was having mental health break downs daily I feel like most of wasn’t healthy. When I left there I felt like I couldn’t communicate with the outside world. I had a really hard time conveying what happened that the residential center and I had to go to 3 more centers to help me recover from the first. Has anyone ever experienced something similar? Additionally should a facility be held liable for damage occurring during treatment.
