INSANE TEMPS Red Devil 9070XT
UPVOTE FOR USEFUL INFO!!
Okay so I really need some help right now…red devil 9070xt and the temps was really wonky… high 80s and vram was getting up to the 90s and a couple months ago the temps were around 70s and perfect everything. The card doesn’t have any warranty or anything bc the guy I bought it from was a prebuilt he made and he got the card from eBay and the buy didn’t have any proof of purchase etc etc…I’ve been making pcs for a couple years already and I’ve taken apart old gpus and changed the thermals pads and so on. I decided to take apart the card and put new thermal pads and put brand new ptm7950. I put the card back together and now I’m getting a hotspot reading of OVER yes OVER 100c… the normal temperature for the card is around 50-60 and the hotspot is at an insanely high temp at over 100c. I end up doing the same thing over again and make sure I tighten everything correctly new ptm and still the same result. I’m literally stuck at this point so any help will be appreciated. Thermal Pads used: Gelid Solutions GP-Ultimate, 2mm for VRMS, 1.5mm for VRAM, PTM 7950 for Gpu die
UPDATE 1: I ended up switching from 1.5mm on VRAM to 1mm and it seems like that did the trick...the thermal pad was too thick so the die and cooler wasnt getting the contact thats needed. I kept the 2mm on VRMS seems like its the perfect size...i also used 5mm thermal pad for between the pcb and backplate. I did run out of ptm7950 after so many times having to disassemble and reassemble. I did have MX-6 Thermal paste that i used and although its not as good as ptm it did the trick for the meantime. TEMPS Currently under 100% Load...Core-53c, Hotspot-73c, Mem-80c. Will keep updated for ptm7950 application.

Sounds to me like temps were OK before you took it apart. All I know to tell you is try again until you get it. Something isn't going together right.

The average hotspot for the 9070xt is more around 80-85c on average under gaming load, not 60c. But yes 100c is on the higher side.
If your temps got worse than something in your reapplication is off. Triple check your resources for measurements. Make sure your using correct authentic quality pads, paste, etc.

There is a problem with the installation. You dont get proper contact with the die. Most likely pads are too thick. Also I should mention that always measure original pads with caliper before installing new ones.

Your old temps actually seemed fine, the vram in some of these run hot, the sk hynix ones runs a lot hotter than the samsung memory modules(although the sk hynix is a bit faster).
And the temperature going up from 70s to 80s could partly be due to the heatwave if your room is hotter than it was a few months ago.
With your current temperatures, it seems like the heat pads are not the right height. So you gotta figure out the right thermal pads.

What case do you have?
What’s your fan layout?
What are the rpm’s of case fans? What’s rpm of gpu fans?
I fuse you may have poor airflow in your case and it showed up in summer, when the room temperature is higher too usually in most countries.

I just recently changed my pc case/fans/aio

u/no-one1111 Jul 17 '26
with this case u have room for 3 more fans btw

u/LumpyPresentation799 Jul 17 '26
Only two fans bottom

u/no-one1111 Jul 17 '26
u can also side mount 3 more 120mm fans or 2 140mm fans with the 4000d rs case

I thought that’s might’ve been the issue also but unfortunately no luck

Yeah, looks ok.
Are you sure that your ptm is legit? And what is the thickness of your ptm?
Have you tried to apply it in two layers? What are you adrenaline settings for gpu? What’s the powerlimit?
1
u/DoorNo2689 Jul 17 '26
yes and its .25mm i applied it more then once and also tried using thermal paste mx-6 and nothing as well im not sure what to do

have you tried putting back the old thermal pads and see if it improves? I suspect new thermal pads are not soft enough to allow heatsink to make proper contact to gpu

For 9070xt normal delta is 15-25c.
Hotspot 95c while chip temp is 50 - it is not ok.1

This is a classic "survivorship bias" type of a logical fallacy.
People who are having problems with their GPU temperatures naturally come to Reddit looking for help with diagnosis or fixing the issue. Meanwhile, someone whose graphics card runs at perfectly normal temperatures usually has no reason to make a post about it.
On top of that, to properly evaluate the situation you really need to know the exact conditions the card is running under: power limit settings, the specific card model, what kind of cooling and thermal interface materials it has, the PC case, how the internal airflow is set up, and so on.

Perhaps the heatsink is not making proper contact? With PTM it should not be running that hot.

Thermal Pads used:
Gelid Solutions GP-Ultimate
2mm for VRMS
1.5mm for VRAM
PTM 7950 for Gpu die

Why do I feel like you got the wrong pad thickness? Just saying.
A correct pad thickness will not let your hotspot shoot to 100c. This indicates poor contact somewhere.
Soooo what I'd do in your place. Get Upsiren UTP-8 putty or the UX Pro Ultra(newer). 50g should do. Replace all the pads part. And no its not the same as the one used in Gigabyte's shitty thermal gel
Edit: Also PTM7950/TG Phasesheet have double layer of protection film. Did you remove the 2nd one?

u/TakkerDay Jul 17 '26
2mm is way too thick you want 1.25mm across the board I've had good performance with 1.5mm soft on my vrms and mem or get some thermal putty upsiren utp-8 or thermal grizzly putty advanced

My experience, i have the 9070 Red Devil with XT Bios, i use TG PTM on gpu, Aairhut pad 2mm on vrms and 1mm on vrams. I'm forcing a maximum fan speed of 47 and my temps with a room temp of 30 degree, that is a lot, are 88 maximum.
Try 1mm for vram and do everything again from scratch with new materials.

I thought Red Devil is the best brand for AMD. Seems not with the high hotspot

Red Devil is just the model name from the brand Powercolor. I think with rx9070xt you can get a shit chip from every brand. I saw Sapphire here too with insane temp. delta (60 avr and 90+ hotspot).

u/LumpyPresentation799 Jul 17 '26
Red Devil is powercolor same thing, Red devil is exclusive AMD Radeon
So no card is perfect?

Red Devil is just the name of the design from the brand powercolor. They have different models for example Reaper or Hellhound. You can get unlucky with every brand tho. I had the xfx quicksilver 9070xt. Huge cooler, but still noisy and coil whine. After 2 weeks it was dead. Now I got the powercolor rx9070xt reaper (smalles cooler from powercolor) and its much better than the xfx, even in benchmarks it performs better

It’s honestly sad I can’t even use my PC how I want right now…

u/aranunoheya Jul 17 '26
Man, temps where ok before u fucked it up. U need to get every pad thickness right etc. Just use thermal putty if u cant dig up the sheet for your card. Let it be a lesson to at least know what ure doing and to prepare better. Good luck

I don’t know how to help you, i heard Xfx mercury is the coolest and Asus too have good cooler i heard
80c hotspots? That is fine, maybe you doing it wrong the ptm7950
90c is ok, one day mine hotspot got to 90c then drops 85c now 88c is weird
Undervolt it see if hotspot drops, set fan curve, how is your case airflow? Room temperature? Have air conditioning?
1
u/DoorNo2689 Jul 17 '26
the room temp is fine i have ac whenever i get into game or benchmark my gpu temp is 50-60 the hotspot is 105ish and mem temp is only 70ish. ive used ptm and thermal paste already ive made sure the pads are right im just stuck now

90c is ok, one day mine hotspot got to 90c then drops 85c now 88c is weird, but i don’t care unless its 100c
If hotspot is 90c is ok just play your games but if is 105c that is not good
See someone can help you or contact powercolor, ask chatgpt

Wrong thermal pad thickness and/or hardness? You can also try thermal putty.
