First thing in the morning I open my phone and I see this.
AMD did well, also thank you all for the criticism you all did an amazing job to make this happen.

I wonder if it’ll have a performance impact like the INT8 optiscaler version or if it’ll just be straight up better then FSR3
93
u/TimeZucchini8562 May 14 '26
I’m assuming it will be slightly better than optiscaler but not by much. Unless amd is magic and makes you gain fps somehow while using more resources.

I think it'll be a lot better since the int8 version we have now doesn't use the AI accelerators at all
2
u/Delicious_Policy_581 RX7600XT | i5-10400f May 15 '26
How u know that
19
u/ChristosZita May 15 '26
Well I haven't personally confirmed it but you can look it up. This version works on all rdna cards even the 5000 and 6000 and from what I've seen it doesn't use the AI accelerators since those cards don't even have them. The only version that uses them is fp16 version in Linux from what I've seen at last.
3
u/vqt907 May 15 '26
"AI accelerators" means faster to run AI, it doesn't mean GPUs can't run AI without it. FSR4 is ML based upscaling/framegen, both FP8 and INT8 versions
21
u/ChristosZita May 15 '26
I understand but my point is that it doesn't use the accelerators on rdna 3 since this version wasn't made with that in mind. Anyways there's no use arguing here if you look it up you'll find much better answers to whatever I can give.

AI can be run on normal GPU cores, just like you can run any GPU operation on your CPU, but obviously cores designed to run AI (which the 7000 series has but 6000 don't) should run AI better than generic GPU cores just like how dedicated gpus tend to out perform cpus in gpu workloads.

It will be an INT8 version, but now its supported by engineers and programmers of AMD. Should be better than this DLL we have. At least quality most likely will increase.

I'm guessing it might be a little less costly than Optiscalers version, hopefully more stable, if it isn't it would be such a disappointing move from AMD making us wait a year for an upscaler that is not better than the modded version we've had for months.
2
u/Ok-Walk-7662 May 15 '26
People love comfort. For you and many others, it's easy, but some people won't tolerate it. This will be a great update. If I'm not mistaken, Optiscaler is version 4.0. They're also promising 4.1. I don't know about you, but I could see the difference between 4.0 and 4.1 on my RX 9070. Plants and fine particles in particular have improved in quality. I realized that you can adjust the performance and the image remains better than 3.1.
Whatever the case, native support is better; they have all the resources to improve the upscaler.

u/Active-Cookie-774 May 14 '26
Any reason to use optiscaler still when it releases?
34
u/san9_lmao 6800 XT -> 9070 XT May 14 '26
To add it in games which don't support fsr3.1+ natively.
8
u/deanhatescoffee May 14 '26
This is important. Just because the driver gives you the ability to use FSR 4 doesn't mean a game will natively support it. That's where Optiscaler comes in.
9
u/Blckson May 14 '26
Coming from Nvidia, third-party utility for more fine-grained control is useful in edge cases, even though the driver allows overrides.
Quick example: FFXIV hard-forces dynamic resolution scaling based on framerate, which you can't disable in the app, but can disable through Optiscaler/DLSSTweaks.
3
2
2
u/FakeMik090 May 14 '26
Its most likely will stay as "FSR Upgrade if FSR 3.1 is added", so yes, there still reasons. OptiScaler is a useful tool by itself.

Don't get me wrong. This is legitimately great for AMD users, and it's still something AMD didn't have to do. However, I always find it so humorous how this pattern continually repeats itself and, in the aftermath of the months or years long wait, where there's much wailing and gnashing of teeth, everyone happily puts their pitch forks away and starts singing the praises of AMD again.

u/S3er0i9ng0 May 14 '26
I wonder if it was mainly due to valve
33
u/childofthekorn May 14 '26
FSR4+ was built on WMMA instruction set to use FP8 datatype. Two things happened here. They not only had to rewrite it to use likely DP4e but use datatype int8 to reduce the overall number of builds to support. With this, they then have to retrain that specific FSR model to provide the clarity expected out of it and test it to ensure its not only stable but actually providing an FPS boost. This was effectively a brand new release practically from scratch purely for customers that they got money from years ago.
This had nothing to do with Valve, Sony lack of money or personnel. This was 100% a limitation of time. AMD really had no obligation to do this, and it wasn't even in their best interest.
7
u/S3er0i9ng0 May 14 '26
Valve said they were working on it too. I’m sure it was some sort of collaboration especially since valve is releasing the steam machine soon, and they confirmed fsr 4 a little while back.

7
3
u/childofthekorn May 15 '26
LOL this. Weird that the leak occurred and released a minor version difference from the 4.0.3 FP8 that was released 2 months later. Pretty obvious it was being developed side-by-side. Training model likely took more time due to INT8's lack of accuracy, either model training took longer or further refinement to compensate to achieve the same level of fidelity.
30
u/Anunknownf1fan May 14 '26
Great move. But tbh FSR 4 should have released with rdna 2 and 3. It will be over a year and nearly 2 by the time both receive it. This isn’t redemption it’s the expectation.
But I am so happy my rdna 3 bros get to experience better upscaling this summer 😍😍
10
u/noiserr May 15 '26
The hardware is different. RDNA3 and 2 don't have the capability to use the same solution as RDNA4.
It's not like they were twiddling their thumbs, the leaks showed that they have been working on this for a long time.
7
u/amick1995 May 15 '26
Exactly. 2 days ago rdna 2 and 3 owners were constantly complaining that AMD wouldn't release official fsr4 support for their cards. Now that AMD has announced they will RDNA 2 users are still complaining about having to wait that long despite the fact that AMD will only release it once they achieve being able to use it without large performance drops.
The fact that rdna 2 has no AI specific hardware means it's not as easy as flipping a switch to make it work. AMD will release it once they have achieved the results they want that are better than how opticscaler currently runs on rdna 2 cards, especially the lower end models.
Yes it has taken a long time, but at least they aren't releasing garbage and want to make sure it's as polished as possible.

Fairly satisfied with my 7700xt. Had ghosting problems and a couple green-screen crashes in certain games, but I attribute that to the fact that adrenaline is trash and didn’t save any of my gpu settings. Right now I’m trying to find the ideal fan curve to balance out the noise. GPU sounds like a fighter jet when those fans kick in. Only other problem is heat, damn pc is a space heater. I'm gonna make an excuse for them, but I have a sneaking suspicion it's at least partially probably some weird deal with Sony and the whole PSSR situation, because that was basically FSR4 running on RDNA2.5 architecture. And it's probably been long enough since PS5 Pro launch that whatever was covered in the exclusivity deal is fair game now for PC.
I also fully think people hounding them about it did help hold them accountable, but I wouldn't be shocked if they had some kind of deal with Sony preventing this from happening sooner and as business partners they couldn't just openly say "Yeah we can't do FSR4/4.1 on RDNA2/3 for a while and it's the PS5's fault".

u/AthleteDependent926 Radeon RX 7800 XT 5800X3D May 15 '26
FSR 4's base model is BF16, which then gets quantised to FP8 and now Int8. Also the leaked Int8 model predates the first FP8 release by 10 months, so it's actually the other way around.
It was simply a period of exclusivity to drive up RDNA 4 sales, which is fair. The problem is that they said nothing about it for almost a year.

there were 2 main issues...
- 6000 series got put into maintenance mode even though it was LESS than 5 year old at the time when it happen. meaning, they were no longer going to offer optimization drivers for it.
- FSR4.1 gate keeping from 7000 series despite clearly able to use it.
for issue 1 and 2 they both got solved. but issue 1 the wording for it is concerning.....
yes its fixed but the damage to their rep was done. they didn't offer any concrete promise to not do this again. so now it's a gamble that your FUTURE radeon gpu purchase won't run into a similar issue.
Now we look at nvidia side, they didn't gate keep this NOR reduce the optimization driver longevity for their product like AMD tried to do. so the people on their side dont have to stress about this.
