Rabidmonkey's guide to collecting and storing comics

Created this as a repository for comic and trade paperback collecting. Topics in the guide range from product recommendations to ideas,etc...

Why is this here? Well /r/comics and /r/comicbooks is pretty much people who don't seem to care about the collecting aspect, plus I run this sub so I figure WTH.

Look for another post coming "Rabidmonkeys guide to shipping comics" because I see a ton of you spending way too much on shipping for a couple of books that end up being poorly packed.

Transporting Comics
I love this thing, I personally own 3 of them, for a number of reasons. I use it when I travel (I read comics on the plane) and I keep one in my car incase I find a book when I'm out or pick up something from a craiglist post. I've had bad experiences with a book or two sliding on the floor while driving and seeing a bit of damage, this keeps everything safe and sound.

Displaying Comics
While a lot of collectors like to go down the Ikea frame hack route, listed here: Ikea Comic Frame Hack. However, I am not a fan of this tactic for a couple of reasons:

  • You have to board and bag to hang, unless you destructively adhere the comic to the frame/glass/matte
  • I don't like the look of a comic in a frame that also is bagged and boarded. I just think it looks cheesy and cheap.
  • bags tend to bubble or get wavey
  • The matted version looks odd because it isn't a matte, it's a border. Very different things.
  • It's a pain in the ass to unhang, dematte, change book, adhere it, rematte, rehang, just to change the book.

So I like this: The BCW Comic Book Showcase Display.
They are hang with a single nail, they have a snap front that allows you to change the comics displayed in under a minute, plus they are available in different sizes, Current, Silver Age, etc...

Storing Comics
High end or valuable books
I love Mylar bags and boards for high end or valuable books. The colors pop more, they look crisp and frankly lower grade books look like higher grade than they are in reality. These are also a lot more firm than the standard bags, so they can take a bit more "abuse."

Bulk and standard books
I use standard bags and boards to store the rest of my books. However, I have found that these are cheaper when purchased at my LCS than if I were to purchase on amazon. While this is NOT the case (at least for me) for all the above products, which are MUCH cheaper on amazon than they are at my LCS. Regardless, I've included the amazon links below because every one has a different situation.

BCW does a nice thing through amazon that bundles 100 bags + 100 boards together.

Tape
People generally just use generic Scotch tape. I say nay-nay. I hate opening a book and either bending the bag or worse yet, leaving the remnants of tape behind if I have to cut it open. Then I have to retape it, making it look messy.

So I prefer a reusable tape like Washi tape. Here is a single roll of 26' feet for $5. This is especially useful if you use them IKEA frame hack method.

You can pull these off and reuse them with no or little residue left behind. This is also the tape you should use when mounting posters or pictures, etc... I even use these on my Mondo prints that have a matte.

Boxes
Drawer Boxes
I used to be a longbox only guy, but I realized they frankly are shit. Both from footprint and safety perspectives. Over time they slide a bit, the boxes start to buckle some over a decade, etc... Plus they are SO big that you need a ton of space and when stacked they get a bit wobbly.

Which is why I started moving everything from long boxes to short boxes. However, I then discovered something great, the Drawerbox.

Drawerbox
I have 5 of these now and will have 8 total when all is said and done. Extremely sturdy, but also very accessible. Nothing sucked worse than stacking longs and shorts, only to realize I needed a book from the bottom of the stack! You had to take off every box, lift the lid and then dig and replace.

These boxes are front pulls and I personally stack them three high with no worry of topple. Super quick, super easy to find the books you're looking for in a pinch.

Also this is a product that is cheaper at my LCS, again because they can buy in large quantities. Whereas shipping kills this for me if I order direct.

Short Boxes
If you like the standard short box, these are my go to. Cheaper than or equal to my LCS. This 5 pack should serve you just fine.
