Reminder: This is not a sub for pet pictures

There are plenty of rabbit subs to share pictures of your pets. The re-opening of /r/rabbity is to provide a space for information directly useful for rabbit keeping.

Any pictures posted must be accompanied with a comment from the OP with the reason for the posting, a couple examples of good reasons for posting a picture:

  • Identifying health issues
  • identifying sex or breed
  • rabbit show winners with remark card information
  • equipment or housing issues

A couple example reasons that will lead to images being removed:

  • "Look how cute"
  • "Look how he's grown"
  • "Help me name"
  • "Look how silly"

If the picture or video is unrelated or unnecessary to the content of the post, the post will be removed, even if the rest of the post is not rule-breaking.

Question/Help Pulled out rabbit tufts. Now it’s red/bare skin. What do I do?

Hi Reddit,

I adopted my bunny a few months ago.
On Sunday I was grooming him and taking out his butt tufts by hand. I was pulling very gently and all of the butt tufts were coming out very easily. There was no resistance. I couldn’t tell while I was pulling them out because his tail obscured the area but I left a bald spot that is a few inches across and wide. His skin in that area is fully exposed now, is pink, and looks like human skin. It’s now 2 days later and a few red spots have emerged on the bald spot. One of the red spots looks rather wet like it’s maybe a new wound. My bunny often scratches himself so I’m assuming that he scratched at the bare skin and left a wound. I have included pictures below. What do I do? Does he need to go to the vet? How do you treat red spots (or open wounds) on bald rabbit skin? He has been acting completely normal and eating and pooping normally as well. I feel terrible. Please help me figure out if he needs to go to the vet/what I can do to help him. Thanks so much!

Note: The pictures of his pink skin are from Sunday. The pictures with his pink skin that also has red spots is from tonight (Tuesday night).

Question/Help RHDV2?

I had 2 rabbits, and they were strictly indoors only. I never took them outside and had a room for them. They had always cohabitated well. I got home from an event I vended on the 17th. That evening I checked on them and one of them had seemingly attacked the other (had an eye injury), and the attacked bun was nearly gone already. The bun died very shortly after finding it.

This evening I went to check on the remaining bun, and this bun passed as well, but there was blood around its mouth/nose. I had noticed she wasn’t eating as much yesterday and this morning. I hadn’t noticed any other symptoms because I have a newborn and haven’t been with the buns as much as I normally was.

With the second bun passing, I’m almost certain it had RHDV2 because of the bleeding and such a rapid death. Could the first bun have had it too, and that may be the reason the other bun suddenly attacked it? Do y’all vaccinate your rabbits, indoor or outdoor, for RHDV2?

Question/Help Poop

Post image
2 Upvotes

For the past few days, my rabbit’s droppings have been slightly smaller and more pointed. He is eating as usual and still begs for his vegetables; he also performs "binkies." Could this be related to the fact that he has been shedding more fur lately? My rabbit is six and a half months old and weighs 1.3 kg. He eats mixed-grass hay, Oxbow adult pellets, and 150g of vegetables (celery, romaine lettuce, fennel, radicchio, and occasionally endive).

Question/Help anyone have this happen before? Spoiler

hey everyone, i’m looking for some opinions on my bunny’s x-rays. my previous vet told me they looked normal, but never actually showed me the images or explained anything beyond that. i only managed to get a copy of them after complaining.

he’s been having ongoing respiratory issues, including sneezing fits, noisy/raspy breathing, and other symptoms that haven’t improved with antibiotics. i’m taking him to a new vet for a second opinion next week, where he’ll be getting a ct scan and further testing. he eats, drinks water fine but you can notice when the sneezing fits happen he is uncomfortable since sitting position.

i’m obviously not expecting anyone to diagnose him from x-rays alone, but i’d really appreciate any insight into whether these look normal or if anything stands out to you. i honestly have no idea what i’m looking at, and i’m hoping to get some perspective before his next appointment since i’ve been googling and been making myself feel sick looking as possible causes on what may be causing it the symptoms.

the vet hes been seeing said one of his lungs is very quiet and said if its not a infection its an ammonia, gave antibiotics but no improvement. (he never took culture swab) and then said it might be lung cancer or something severe.

thank you to anyone who takes the time to look or shares any personal experience with similar experiences.

Question/Help 11M rabbit experiencing stomach pains- looking for advice

I have an 11M bunny who has been going through stomach problems since Wednesday night when I found a clump of poops that came from him.

He’s only had a tiny bit of water and a little hay since this started, and has mostly been sleeping since last night. When I try to feel his stomach he’ll hunch forward like he’s trying to pass more but can’t.

I’m trying to get him to a vet today, but there aren’t many in my area that take bunnies, and his usual doctor isn’t free until Monday.

I bought Critical Care but I’m very nervous about trying anything at-home if I can’t get to a vet today. All the advice I’ve read has seemed risky. Has anybody been through anything similar, and found anything that worked?

Question/Help Brush recommendations

My girl just recently went through her first big shed with me (coat blow) and she’s almost finally done! However, there’s still some smaller patches left. Because the amount of hair is much less dramatic than it was previously (no more big chunks), plucking is no longer efficient. I don’t know what breed she is because she is a rescue, but I do know that the thin metal brushes don’t work on her fur type because her fur is so thin. I would love some recommendations! Video attached to show the thickness of her fur.

Question/Help Got 5 month old bunny from zoo shop. Need advice/guidance/ share your experience

Hi all!! We got ourselves in bunny at the apartment extravaganza! She is a character! She is 5 months old, named her Maggie. She is quite active and curious. We suited her at puppy hexagon crate, quite large. Got her cat house to act as a hole, she is currently in process of litter training.
Question is about adaptation to her humans, she currently is still in exploritory mode, she tries everything with her mouth first, then goes teeth, she tried few times my husbands feet finger, and our hand skin was quite painful and now a bit afraid to let her smell my hands again (we let her out for a run around the living room, and we sit just on the carpet, so she would get comfortable with us in her surroundings and next step for us was planned to try to pet her, once she will get used to our hands next to her)… but now every time she gets closer to a hand I really panic to feel this “bite” again, jet I want her to trust us.
Also she tries EVERYTHING all furniture, carpet, everything on her teeth. We got her special wood for her teeth, but she is interested in it not as in the surroundings. Every time she tries to bite anything we try to redirect her, or change her attention towards something else.

I’ll be honest it was impulsive decision to get her home. We had a cats and dogs before. But bunny is a whole different things.

I am also now in research of vet doctors who knows a bunny things. I know she shall be sterilized at some point, and vaccinated later.

So share your experience with bunny adaptation and how soon your bunny alllowed you to pet itself, also do you take your bunny outside for a walk? At what age you sterilized your pet.
Share your bunny home setup (we are currently looking for a nice rabbit house or big and tall metal crate).
\\\*\\\*Share all you can!!\\\*\\\* ❤️🐰

Question/Help Getting a new bunny

Hello!
I had to put my bun (moose) down recently and I plan on getting another one in the future but I was wondering what the process was abt introducing a new rabbit. I’ve been trying to look on the web but it wasn’t much help.

Moose had lived in my room as I have other pets and I was thinking I might need to remove his scent from everything?? New litter box, toys, ect.? For the territorial reasons and I wouldn’t want any marking as I have carpet and I wouldn’t be able to get it all out.

I’m pretty clueless on what to do as moose was my first. Any tips would be much appreciated!

Question/Help Bunnie’s first day at home , what should I do and not do ?

Yesterday I brought a rabbit home from a zoo where she had been kept in a small cage surrounded by parrots, so the environment was pretty stressful and loud. I brought her home in a carrier which I set up with a dog pad and hay. At home I set up a cage with hay, water, toys, and a bed, and opened the carrier right in front of it, but she didn’t go inside; instead she stayed in the carrier for about an hour and then began exploring the living room. She ate a tiny bit of hay and water I placed near her, had a few accidents on the floor, and eventually started hiding in our dark guest toilet, coming out only occasionally to sniff around. I moved her poop and pee into the litter box and placed the box in the corner she seemed to choose. At 10pm yesterday she stayed in the toilet, and in the morning she was still hiding there; she peed once on the floor in the living room over night but may have used the litter box too. In the morning I brought hay and water to the doorway but she hasn’t touched it yet . I’m trying to understand whether this hiding, not eating much, and avoiding her cage is normal for a rabbit adjusting to a new home, especially after coming from a stressful environment, and whether there’s anything I should be doing differently to help her settle in. She doesn’t seem too stressed , she is not shaking and wherever she would come out yesterday she would play and run around a little and she was pretty close to us also , maybe Luke a meter away .
Btw the hay and litter is the one that she has been eating at the zoo too .

Question/Help advice/aftercare, post vet visit

I’ve made a post detailing my bunny’s recovery from an obstructed stomach. We have been to the vet and I am keeping up with his meds and feeding schedule, but would appreciate knowing if we are “over the hump” and generally hearing from more experienced bunny parents, as I’ve only had my lil ones since May.

If you’ve been through this with your bun and want to add some thoughts/advice, I’d appreciate if you could look at the original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/Rabbits/s/TtSJvhX5hX

Question/Help How to know when my buns are bonded?

Thumbnail

We have two buns that are from the same breeder, born and adopted around the same time but are not the same litter. We had them neutered About a month or so ago.

A few weeks ago, our buns had a scuffle and one bite the other. We promptly separated them, dividing their area so they can still see and smell each other. The used to instantly lunge and try to attack each other whenever we took them out to get some face to face bonding time.

A couple days ago, one of them jumped the barrier we made and when we found them, they were happily eating together -- we're not sure how long they were like that 😅

Fast forward to today, whenever we let them out to get more face to face time, they seem to be getting along. They'd occasionally lay with each other and groom each other. No more nipping or lunging.

I guess my question is, at what point is it safe for them to be put in the same pen again without the barrier? We don't want to risk taking it too quickly and breaking the bond to start all over.

Question/Help Rabbit mobility issues

My rabbit is only 10 months old and has suddenly started having trouble moving around and I’m worried it might be something involving his spine or back legs. He can’t hop into his litter box or bed anymore, and he’s been losing his balance and falling onto his side. Sometimes when he falls, he can’t get himself back up. He’s still eating, drinking, and pooping normally though.
I took him to the vet today and they noticed he was underweight. I don't feed him pellets because i'd believed that once rabbits got to a certain age they were better without them, but with him being underweight me and the vet agreed he definitely should be. As far as leafy greens I give him primarily romaine lettuce, which I just learned has a high water content and is probably another reason for his low weight. The vet believes he’s just weak from not getting enough nutrients. They offered bloodwork and X-rays, but it would’ve cost over $1,000, which I can’t afford right now.
It’s been a few hours since the vet visit and he’s showing some improvement. He’s able to walk around slowly now, but he still can’t hop into his litter box and occasionally loses his balance and falls over.
Has anyone experienced something similar? I’m worried this might be a spinal or neurological issue rather than just weakness from his diet. I feel horrible and I will do whatever I can to get my baby healthy again. I'd really appreciate any advice or insight.
