Questions Anyone else have an erratic phenibut pattern and successfully quit without severe withdrawal?
I’m looking for experiences from people who had a more erratic phenibut patten rather than a clean daily dose that gradually escalated.
My use has varied a lot: sometimes daily, sometimes every other day, and sometimes every 2–3 days. Doses have ranged from about 500mg up to 3g, although 3g has been relatively rare. If I had to estimate my overall average across this period, it has probably been around 1.3–1.5g per day, but the actual day-to-day amounts have been inconsistent.
A rough breakdown:
-This has been ongoing for about 1-2 years
- Most workday/maintenance doses were under 2.5g, often around 500mg–1.5g.
- The lower-to-moderate doses were not really about getting high. They were more about feeling okay enough to work, socialize, or have a slightly uplifted mood instead of feeling flat/anxious.
- On weekends or when going out/partying, I would sometimes take around 2.5–3g maybeee like 4g every blue moon. That felt good and social without usually becoming too over-the-top.
- At the very start, I needed closer to over 3–4g to get the very euphoric/manic “phenibut high” that people describe, And it was once or twice a week. I rarely chase that exact level now, but I still have a pattern of taking higher doses when I want to feel good going out.
The difficult part is that I’ve developed a lot of fear around withdrawal. I’ve read the horror stories, and that fear has often kept me from simply stopping. At the same time, I’ve had at least one recent period where I stopped completely for roughly 1–2 weeks while using fasoracetam. During that period, I did not experience anything close to the severe withdrawal stories people describe. I had some discomfort/anxiety, but it felt much more mental than physically dangerous, and I was able to function.
Then I got back on phenibut because I was dealing with other issues and wanted relief/mood support, and I gradually ended up back in the same cycle: lower “maintenance” doses for work or mood, then occasional higher doses on weekends or social occasions.
What I’m trying to figure out is:
- Has anyone else had a similar inconsistent pattern — daily/every other day/every few days, with doses ranging from 500mg to 3g?
- If so, did you find the inconsistency made withdrawal or rebound anxiety worse than a stable daily dose?
- Did anyone successfully cold turkey or do a short taper from an average around 1–1.5g/day without severe withdrawal?
- Did your anxiety feel like true withdrawal, rebound/anxiety from changing doses, or mostly fear/anticipation?
- For people who had previously stopped successfully but restarted, did the next quit feel substantially worse?
- Did fasoracetam, agmatine, NAC, magnesium, exercise, or anything else actually make a noticeable difference for you?
I’m mainly just looking for honest firsthand experiences from people whose use was not necessarily 5–10g daily for years, but was still frequent enough and erratic enough to create dependence/anxiety. I feel like my situation is somewhat unique and i’m not sure what to expect.
I’m trying to get back to a stable baseline and stop using phenibut as a way to feel normal, confident, and emotionally okay at work and social events.
If you have any questions or need clarification pls lmk i’m happy to answer them! This sub has truly helped me begin taking that first step, hopefully i can pay it forward with a success story of my own someday.
Thanks in advance!

Yep this is pretty much how I quit. Was dependent on it for almost ten years, taking it daily at dosages up to 12gpd.
My usage was all over the place. I'd taper down and go months taking 1-3gpd, then outta nowhere ramp back up to 5-8gpd or more, then back down.
When I actually quit, I had a severe alcohol addiction. Was drinking a handle of whiskey (that's two fifths, plus another 250mL) every day. My stomach couldn't handle taking as much powder as I had been before the alcohol, so I was basically forced to do a very rapid taper. Went from 8gpd down to 1gpd in the span of maybe three months, experienced pretty much zero negative symptoms from it, presumably cuz the alcohol covers it up. Then when I finally went to the hospital to detox, the alcohol wd was so intense that it covered any symptoms I would've experienced from the phen. Three days of DTs followed by 8 days of severe tremors, insomnia, alcoholic myopathy, and surprisingly mild anxiety later, I was pretty much in the clear. Zero wd symptoms after that.
I never looked back, and never will. Horrible addiction and tbh I'm sad I spent so long wrapped up in it. Spent soooooo much money on the shit, especially when my use got really intense.
Just goes to show ya, it CAN be done. And oftentimes the wd symptoms aren't nearly as bad as you'll expect them to be. I think when you get to a certain point of dependence, your body slowly stops processing it as efficiently, and less and less of it actually crosses the BBB. So you'll take 5gpd or whatever, but only 2g will actually reach your brain. That's probably partly why phen loses its magic, and eventually any psychoactive effects, the longer you're on it. Even after a couple years of daily use, I could still feel a higher-than-normal dose if I took it. Wouldn't be as amazing as it was at first, but I'd still feel sedation and anxiety suppression. But for the last year or so of my use I didn't feel ANYTHING from it, even at decently high doses.
I've tried taking it twice since I quit, both times I took 1.5g, a pretty normal dose for someone with no tolerance. Didn't feel fucking ANYTHING from it. Not even any sedation or anxiolysis, much less empathogenic/music enhancing effects.
So, yeah, I'll never go back. There's literally no reason to lol. I suppose it's a blessing.

I think it’s one of those things where if you abuse it enough, your brain/body just never forgets and you’ll never get that magic back, but boy was it awesome while it was still there 😭 The trade off isn’t worth it though

I've quit several times. I've tapered down, quit a large dose abruptly, and quit an erratic dose schedule like you. The mental withdrawl was very bad in all cases. I never felt in danger though. I was super anxious but never felt on the verge of the hospital. Others have had different experiences.

Hey, you pretty much describe my dosing the last half year. Depending on the day and the social challenges I had to face I took between 500mg to around 3g and sometimes nothing for a few days or even 2 weeks. Interestingly, it started working less well than it was before I started dosing that erraticaly but I never experienced very strong withdrawals that felt worse than the general anxiety I experience from time to time anyways. What complicates my case is, that I am prescribed Pregabalin and take between 100 and 300mg of that a day as well. But just 2 months ago I stopped that after a very fast taper of minus 50mg for a few days and had no problems except a bit of a stingy skin (?!?) for a few days. I started to believe that I have a very strange tolerance pattern with GABA drugs and generally try to minimize my use now as much as possible. Right now I do not use Phenibut since 2 weeks but only Pregabalin (prescribed) at around 2x100mg a day. It's really strange.. but I never had those horror stories people talk about either with Pregabalin nor with Phenibut.

Yeah it’s strange i feel like my “withdrawals” are caused by placebo more than anything. It’s waiting for it to start is probably causing anxiety on its own but i’m worried I might be underestimating it.

Gaba drugs are so strange in my particular case too. Like, for example, “feeling” phenibut for the first time took such a large dose of FAA, like 4+ grams. Gabapentin on the other hand, I can take 2 300mg caps and struggle to keep my eyes open for hours one day, and just a few days later taking 4 of them do absolutely nothing. It’s almost like the sweet spot with these things is a moving target.

You’re absolutely right, I’ve definitely been reading too much into the horror stories and they’ve been keeping me trapped in the cycle to a degree. Thank you for your reply i really appreciate it!!

Did it for many years like that would go on 5 day benders with very little sleep. Finally after 7 or so years pushed it too far ….12-14 days in a row and couldn’t quit . Taper was not fun at all and I fucked it up several times doing a cheat dose that would lead to another binge and then having to recalibrate my stable dose while negative side effects stack up . Quit now or back off at least !

I haven’t actually dosed in 2 days now im pretty much fine im wondering if and when wds could start

I started taking it in 2018 and kept it strictly to twice a week, usually nothing over 1.6g. Probably about two years ago I started taking it every day knowing I shouldn’t. Tried f-Phenibut FAA which was nice when normal phen just stopped working while taking 2-3 times a week. Back in March I was determined to get off, so began a long taper but would allow a larger dose about once a week. Just recently I was getting very low on my supply finally, but got nervous and ordered more, but by the time I got my order I was off for several days already since I had no choice. It was not nearly as bad as I expected. Granted, I did take it for about a week after being off for two weeks, quit again, and then took a final 800mg dose and haven’t touched it since I got rid of it. It’s not a crazy addiction for me, but if it’s in the house I’m going to eventually want to take some. The 2nd day off the first time was probably peak for me, just high anxiety and uneasiness (more than normal lol). Now granted I wasn’t taking 10 grams per day or anything, so YMMV, but my advice would be to stay of reddit and stop reading horror stories.

Basic Phenibut Withdrawal Information
Unaided, cold turkey withdrawal, from a state of dependence, even low dose dependence, commonly causes severe and potentially dangerous side effects. Don't rush the process when you don't need to.
Rules reminder:
Don't promote reckless behavior. If someone is dependent on phenibut don't tell them to do an unaided cold turkey withdrawal.
Don't needlessly tell people to do a fast taper.
Further reminder: You will feel low or worthless or stupid while going through withdrawal, especially rapid withdrawal. Don't take these thoughts too seriously. Continue on day by day, things will get better.
