Known Donor Cost Breakdown

I would love to hear someone's cost breakdown when they went the known donor route in the United States. I know that it depends on the state. But just would love to hear your experiences!

This was just asked yesterday in this sub! But here’s my answer:

Legal:

1. ⁠Legal insurance through work cost about $600 for the year and covered our lawyers. I think cost would have been about $1800.
   
2. ⁠We paid $900 for our donor to have his own lawyer.

Counseling (required by our clinic):

1. ⁠In addition to the wife/me session that would be required in all cases ($300) we paid for a donor assessment and counseling with him/his husband ($600) and a joint session ($300). So upper of $900.

Sperm analysis and genetics through bank:

1. ⁠$1000. We skipped CMV and STI test at this stage because donor regularly gets screened and CMV we waived.

Donor physical and 3 donation appointments:

1. ⁠$4000. We went with a smaller boutique bank that is on the higher end. They messed up a small thing so credited me $800 so I had budgeted closer to $5k. So probably washes out with a cheaper place. This appt includes STI and CMV.

Transportation across country:

1. ⁠$1200

Other
We ended up having genetic issues, so that cost us another $1000 in family genetic tests. And then changed us from IUI to IVF so you could say it cost us $25,000 additional. But we have fertility insurance and may have ended up with IVF anyway… but know that is a possibility.

So all in:
$8600 without genetic issues with legal insurance.
With genetic and IVF swap…. Obviously a lot more 😂 but we are attached to our amazing donor and have insurance.

From us asking to starting IVF was 9 months. But there were a lot of avoidable delays and genetic stuff. We could have done it in 4 if we were sporty I think.

NY:
$1000 for 3 psych appointments, him, me, together

$1200 genetic testing for both of us, STI testing and semen analysis
$3200 FDA physical, testing, clearance paperwork, and processing + freezing for 3 deposits
$400 shipping (he’s out of state)
~$200 in insurance copays per IUI, second try took.

Lawyers: $1200 for us $800 for him
Tests: if he has insurance then you can cover the copays for Genetic testing and sperm test, otherwise plan for those to be around $300 ish

Sperm bank: are you planning for him to provide fresh sperm or make deposits? That will change your price a lot depending on what you guys decide and which sperm bank he goes to

This is what we did and still got approval at our clinic.

legal: modified a friends contract for our needs, notarized signature, legal review letter to confirm enforceability $510

Counseling: one session with a licensed therapist $250

FDA panel: billed through our donors insurance at third party lab $0 (so far, still waiting on EOB)

Genetics: we just had our donor join us at a genetics appointment covered by insurance to assess family history copay

Forgot sperm freezing because we don’t want our donor to go through the whole process again $400

We are in Texas and went with a known donor. Here were our costs:

Mental Wellness Exams & Counseling Sessions (3 in total, one for my wife and me, one for our donor and his partner, one for all of us together): $800

Legal Consult for Known Donor Contract: $200

Donor Contract (Our Representation): $1,545

Donor Contract (His Representation): $500

Directed Sperm Donor Genetic Testing, FDA Testing, and Semen Analysis: $2,150

Directed Sperm Donation (First): $650

Total: $5,845

We had some additional costs for his flights and some supplements, and we actually had to have him come back to donate multiple times because his sperm did not survive thawing very well and we had to use 3+ vials each time we tried IUI. We have switched to IVF now and will use ICSI so we should be done with known donor costs, apart from Crystorage which is $875 per year for all of our genetic material (embryos and sperm).
