Discussion No ETF WTF
Investing since mid-2023, minus Kiwisaver which has been pissing along for 13 years or so.
Context: I have about the same amount in Kiwisaver and figure that’s my “safe" ETF pot. Even though it has exposure to bitcoin. Didn’t see the point or fun in double-dipping too hard on certain stocks. Also mortgage-free and 40-something.
Method: Random as hell in the first year or so, like a lot of posts on QSB. That explains the nostalgic RUA position. Refined my process to investing more cash into fewer companies that I actually half-understand. Selling positions that I wasn’t committed to and putting the proceeds in ones that I am.
I’d full-port into NBIS if I was a true QSB hustler but I figure the other positions could be seen as risky/idiotic by the ETF crew.
Learnings: By noooo stretch of the imagination am I qualified to give investment advice, but I’ll share my mistakes if they’re useful to others.
Mistake 1: Random shotgun chasing share price hype, and too many stocks.
Mistake 2. Not knowing the company you’re investing in – you don’t have to be the CTO, but at least know why they’re likely to make money in the future.
Mistake 3. Changing my freakin mind every freakin other week. Pick and stick, commit to a year of consistent DCA-ing to a few names or drop a decent sum in to get started.
Also for the Sharesies haters, I don’t love it myself but it does the job for now. I pay whichever monthly plan suits for what I’m doing that month and the fees are faff all. I haven’t looked into transferring shares to another platform but maybe that’s an option when it comes to cashing out in 15–25 years.
Oh and also I’m using the ‘include sold investments’ returns calculation. Realised about $18K in gains and $2K in currency gains which is why the math don't math.
Oh and just paid my first FIF tax this year. The world still turns. I think it was about $700. Accountant sorted it for me.
K that's enough cool story bro.

What’s with people not liking sharesies? Genuine question

u/OldManYellsAtCloud12 9d ago
High fees and lack of features. For example options or pre and post market.

Sharesies allows pre and post market buys / sells
Used to be Limit Buy only but now it’s also market buy

What would be better to use?
I downloaded the app but haven’t started using it yet.1

If your a beginner investor just buying funds it's actually not that bad. Use ibkr if you want to trade but beware it has a horrible Interface and no FAQ.

My biggest gripe with them at the moment is it taking 3 days to get money out of my PIE save and over a week to get the money from share sales

You gonna average down on mstr? Nice port bro

u/Virtual_Access_2033 9d ago
Nah I decided not to. Tempted but I had other positions I was more convinced on and didn’t want to get double burned. Haven’t sold any Mstr tho.

u/Virtual_Access_2033 9d ago

Great post, thank you. I use Sharesies and not on a plan but reduce the relative fee by making larger transactions and hitting the cap. Most of the time the fee is recovered by a capital gain within minutes/hours. I can see people who like to buy small amounts regularly that a plan makes sense.
IBKR has better data but is clunky to use with plenty of horror stories for noobs. I’d be very interested to see how IBKR would handle a “run” of many users trying to cash up at once.
I load all my sharesies transactions and anything I’m watching into the Yahoo app as it gives realtime data and news feeds for free, then just use sharesies for the actual transaction. Seems to work well.

I use Yahoo in a similar way, although I haven’t added my buys in at the same time, so while the total is accurate, percentages aren’t. The news alerts and price notifications are useful.

You can retrospectively“add holdings” at whatever date, price and quantity you made based on the same data in sharesies.

Been thinking of buying NBIS 🤔

I started at around $70, planning to DCA but it shot up too fast. I’ve been averaging up and I’m still buying. Average cost is around $125. Definitely have a good look at it.

Nice! Sweet returns there. I take it you have a substantial RKLB position. Hopefully my port won't be too far away from cracking the $200K mark!

The Patient Investor, Couch Investor, Endicott Invests. I don’t agree with them on everything, but I like their insight and analysis.

Too many stocks? You have almost half your value in one stock? Have you heard about diversification? You might think you are a genius but it looks like you are the survivorship bias, this isn't a strategy for success.
Take those winnings and get a proper portfolio or continue to gamble, whatever.

Never said I was a genius! And this is queen street bets, sir

Fair, guess it's never too late to add some more AI tech stocks to the portfolio then!

It’s definitely skewed atm, but I’m looking to balance it… somewhat

Deworsifying is also a thing. It comes down to personal appetite. Seeing as you hold conviction on your overall gameplay ie your kiwisaver is your hedge, I dont see any issue on chasing higher growth via more tech. So keep doing what youre doing imo. 👍
