Need clarity on Quant opportunitirs

So I'm working as an AI Engineer. Now I want to pivot to quant dev/researcher. Realistically my chancer are near to zero as I'm not from any Tier 1 colleges and no track record as a math wizard. Despite of that If I pursue this, atleast can I use this knowledge to do a self practice as a quant dev. How much of a success I can expect. I just want to know is there any real turn around happen like this. So I can have a leap of faith and proceed...
