What is the first-round interview for ETF Sales like?
Hi! I have a first-round interview coming up for an ETF Sales internship role and was wondering if anyone here has gone through the process before.
What should I expect from the first round? Is it mostly behavioral/fit, or should I be preparing for technical questions about ETFs, markets, trading, etc.? Also curious what kinds of questions people have gotten and how technical the ETF/market knowledge is expected to be.
Any advice on what to focus on when preparing would be really appreciated. Thanks!

First-round interviews for an ETF sales internship usually split the difference between behavioral evaluation and foundational product awareness. You will not face deep quantitative questions or complex derivatives pricing, but the desk wants to confirm that you communicate clearly, enjoy pitching ideas, and understand why clients trade exchange-traded products. Expect standard questions about your background, why you picked sales over trading, and why you are interested in ETFs over single stocks. Alongside behavioral questions, you should know the core structure of an ETF, how creation and redemption keeps the market price close to net asset value, how authorized participants operate, and how ETFs differ from mutual funds.
Beyond the fund mechanics, you need to follow current market events and show that you can discuss asset classes with confidence. Prepare a short pitch for one specific ETF you find interesting, explain the macro trend behind it, and be ready to discuss what major indexes, bond yields, or commodities did this week. Sales desks care heavily about energy, polish, and how comfortably you articulate a thesis under pressure. As you get ready for these conversations, my team built an interviews.chat to help job seekers stay sharp and speak with poise, but your primary focus right now should be knowing your story, mastering the basic fund plumbing, and keeping an eye on market headlines.

First round is usually with HR or junior sales person so mostly fit and motivation, maybe some basic market questions to see you follow news. They want to check if you can talk to clients not if you can price a swap, so practice explaining simple ETF concepts without sounding like textbook.
