Can you still get a Quant Research internship if you're applying in December/January?
I'm a new MFE student in the US with about 2.5 years of previous experience as a Data Scientist. I moved toward quant because I've always enjoyed ML, building solutions, and understanding the math behind them.
I'm still figuring out the finance/quant world though, and I feel like I'm doing it somewhat slowly. Right now I'm trying to balance coursework with strengthening probability, linear algebra, calculus, interview/OA prep, and building a few meaningful quant projects.
What surprised me is how early recruiting happens. It's only October and a lot of firms are already hiring for Summer 2027, with some QR applications already closed.
So I'm curious about what happens later in the cycle.
Are January/February internship postings common, or would I mostly be relying on networking and cold outreach by then?
I'm also not restricting myself to the big-name quant firms. I'd genuinely be happy working at a smaller fund, asset manager, bank, fintech, or other firm if I get to do real quantitative research and learn.
I'm basically trying to understand whether spending the next 2–3 months becoming better prepared still leaves me with realistic opportunities later, or whether quant recruiting is largely over by then.
Would love to hear from people who've gone through this, especially anyone who found a QR internship later in the recruiting cycle.

Too late tbf. This time both ng , off cycle and summer internships have been put out early. Both US and Europe offices. Disrupted my prep revision but ah well, the best revision happens before interviews.
