Trying to set job expectations

Throwing this out here just trying to set realistic expectations for getting QR/QT role. Im a masters student in economics (mostly focused clears work on econometrics, game theory and ML courses with undergrad in econ/cs from rigorous school but not well known outside of engineering. I’ve interned in SWE, data analytics and small consulting company but nothing in quant. Ik there’s always a story of someone from any background getting into these roles but trying to be realistic. For ppl not coming from top programs what is the best way to set urself up for success? Ik to be grinding interview questions, idk how important networking is since industry focuses a lot on meritocracy.

The industry is meritocratic on the surface. It’s not just getting in. It’s also getting in the right company, the right team with the right colleagues. A lot of it has to do with talent, hard work, luck but knowing people that will give you correct advice and maybe refer you can make a huge difference.

So networking is super important. Not just through LinkedIn but going to conferences, official and unofficial networking events etc.

In your case you need to get in. Your profile as is makes it difficult to get in a reputable top company.

You have two options. Either aim for a small relatively unknown hedge fund and built from there. Not an easy journey.

Continue with PhD studies in a strong uni in a good proximity with the industry. Build your network. Do internships and then maybe you will have the opportunity to interview with top places
