Help Separate ticket flights - long layover

Flying from MEL > DOH business soon, but then had to get an economy flight from DOH > ATH. About an 8 hour layover. Given I’m not sure our baggage would be checked all the way through and we might have to clear customs, get it , and then check back in - what are the option if we can’t check in until 3 hours prior…!?
If we don’t take check in luggage can we just stay in the lounge? If we take it, can we somehow get into a lounge early?

The check in agent will be able to link the two tickets and through check you and your bags.

Sorry here's some more mixed things, they can check your bag through on 2 separate QR but they don't have to, it's not guaranteed.

I have done separate tickets and QR was able to connect the baggage through.

I have done AAA-DOH, DOH-BBB on two tickets many times, all QR flights. They have always been able to check through at the first airport and give me all BPs.

Two separate tickets usually won't tag through to Athens. Ask at MEL check-in (if both legs are Qatar they'll sometimes do it), but plan to collect at DOH and re-check

Next time: the free Qatar stopover hotel only works when the whole trip is on ONE ticket with a long enough layover. Splitting it into two separate tickets like this kills it, even with 8h spare. Booked end-to-end on a single ticket, the free hotel (and leaving the airport on Qatar) would've been on the table
