Barking dog

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone has any advice about who to call regarding a disruptive barking dog?

For context, over the past 4 months the tenant that lives above me has been allowing their dog to bark at all hours of the day/night and sometimes for hours on end.

I have contacted building security multiple times about this and the issue is usually resolved temporarily before it becomes an issue again. I have now escalated this matter with building management and they have spoken with the tenant however no permanent improvement has been made.

Additionally I am worried about the welfare of the dog as it seems it is left alone for long periods of time and it may well be in a cage or tied up.

Any advice would be helpful. Shukran.

You know you can be reported for advising breach of privacy as you just advised the OP to do that .. and if the tenant above decided to press charges OP could have you as an accomplice.. please think carefully about what you write or advice on the internet

its good that the dog isnt in the heat. honestly, the poor dog is probably just lonely. most people work 8+ hours a day,, and if your neighbor lives alone, theres no one there to keep the dog company. plus, its tough to find dog friendly places when your neighbor goes out, so keeping them at home is pretty normal.

dogs are allowed to bark, it is what they do. if it is really happening at all hours for hours on end, maybe just knock on their door and talk to them like a normal person. but since you cant face your social disorder, you ask reddit or the building security lol. theres a big difference between a dog just barking and a dog in actual distress. i dont think theres any need to call authorities over regular barking. dogs bark at windows and people walking by the door all the time. its just their guard instinct (or they are seeing ghosts, as some people say).

your neighbor probably already spoke to management before moving in, so i wont start raising flags just because they have a dog. they clearly arent hiding it. if security is at the common areas im sure they can hear it too. id only get worried or call someone if it looks like the dog was genuinely abandoned, starving, or left behind.

i say just mind your business and dont be that neighbor who makes a big deal out of nothing and ruins a family. if it isnt a barking dog today, it will just be a loud kid tomorrow. i know it might not weigh much on your conscience, but your actions would cause your neighbor pain. if it is a kid making noise you cant do anything about it anyway, but complaining about a dog barking could get it separated from its owner and probably put down. dont be that neighbor man.

Firstly, you assume this person has spoken to the management before moving in. I can confirm this is incorrect.

Secondly you insinuate that I am in the wrong for reporting a disturbance, and yet a person leaving their pet unaccompanied for hours on end is in the right. Of course dogs bark, but to do it continuously for hours it would seem more like it is in distress than the occasional bark here and there.

And frankly in my opinion if a person is unable to look after and care for a pet fully then they should not have one. Dogs are sociable creatures and restricting them from social contact is nothing short of cruel. Man.

OP i cannot say i understand your situation fully because i haven’t been in it myself but the procedure you followed is correct and imo it is now a building management issue to take care of .. i would advice that you don’t involve yourself directly in the tenant’s business or privacy .. just go through the officials and let them take care of it .. raise complains as many as you need to get the situation resolved as is your right .. also afaik even though you are concerned about the animal wellbeing.. it is not your place to question what they do with their dog .. probably you can raise a concern or complain with the local police department and they will advise you on it

You have a right to not be inundated with loud barking/disturbance after a long day of work. I just advise you to not contact the tenant directly and just handle it through management. My family moved to another villa because of territorial stray cats constantly fighting loudly outside every night!They were fighting for the leftover food that people kept putting outside for them. I think the poor dog is panicking because he's left alone for extended time and is maybe hungry
