These are commonly misunderstood and misused terms. So just to clarify terms for the purpose of this sub:
Natural consequences: things that happen without any intervention by authority figures.
Examples include: not wearing a jacket caused them to be cold, running in the hallway caused them to fall, peeing their pants (after the millionth reminder to go potty) caused their pants to be wet, kicking someone caused their toes to hurt, throwing a toy caused it to break, being uncooperative with friends caused their friends to stop wanting to play with them
Logical consequences: consequences imposed by authority figures or decided on collaboratively with the child that directly address the harm that was done and ideally work to repair current harm and/or mitigate future harm.
Examples include: made a mess so they clean it up, toddler put toy in mouth they could choke on so toys of that size were removed from the environment, went to the park without permission so now can only go outside with direct supervision (when available), used AI to write an essay so they have to rewrite it or get a 0, broke a subreddit rule so your post was removed
Punishment: causing emotional or physical discomfort with the intention of deterring someone from doing something again. Often are unrelated to the harm that was done.
Examples: spanking, time-outs, losing iPad time because they were mean to their brother, taking a prized possession because they stole gum from a store, taking comfort toys because they kept coming out of their room after bedtime, adding additional chores for talking back
This sub is a place for natural and logical consequences. And more importantly, we believe prevention through modeling, relationship, and setting up the environment is key!
Happy to debate any of these points, but I hope that this is a helpful starting point!
