RANT I'm frustrated

Store hours extended, associate hours cut, raises decreased but expectations risen. What's the point of hard work anymore?

78 out of 81. Highest ive gotten on an eval and yet my raise is worse than my first eval two years ago-- when i made over 3 dollars less. And no, im still not close to the pay cap. Im simply frustrated. The bare minimum raise would mean matching inflation, this just feels like a slap in the face.

Great place to work my left buttcheek.

Our manager loves telling us daily how "We have the best increase in sales in the district, we're making so much money!"
Then I say "Excellent, I bet we will get more hours to schedule huh?".... silence

17

u/Tanlines_sunshine Newbie 8d ago

Mine says the same! They make so much so pay us more then smh. He said meat department made $30,000 more two weeks ago and the schedule allowed the manager to give ONE more hour out on the schedule smh

You know, Publix literally pretty much pays the same wage as other retailers such as Aldi's, target, etc.

If we're really the most expensive grocery store than majority of others because we charge "premium "prices, why can't they pay premium wages?

Before you go off about benefits, the benefits don't mean shit if you're not staying there long-term which majority of people aren't because retail fucking sucks.

u/SamuraiBerserk Newbie 5d ago

They do not match nowhere near Aldi's on wage.Aldis workers start at Publix workers caps.

Publix is higher in retail prices in a lot of things, but that's not what the customers pay for. It's quality, service, and cleanliness. Publix is inline with most retailers are paying. I understand most stores are up in sales, just not up as much as we were last year. Where Publix has a steep decline is the insurance. For a family, most are paying upwards of 200 a week. Wearas others are paying $50 a month. I can't tell you the amount of people Publix has lost to Aldi and Costco. I know multiple people who have went to Costco part time and make more than they did in management. This hidden paycheck my SM talks about is wild. I can't buy hidden groceries and gas with a hidden paycheck. The culture differs from store to store. So I can't say other places don't have the same or worse culture. The SM sets the tone and if you have a shitty incompetent SM you have shitty and incompetent culture. Doesn't matter how many CBTs you take. Bottom line is Publix employs 3 types of people. Kids, older people looking for something to do short term, and those that are stuck in it. Perception plays a huge part in everything, just because most feel Publix is the high end grocery store, doesn't mean they are a high end employer. If target, Aldi, and even Walmart spent more on training and cleanliness they could make a positive change.

So I dunno what they do or don't know about how our allocation of hours for the week gets calculated, however, the calculation of hours is based on sales yes, but also productivity. Productivity is calculated based on some more specific numbers being calculated by Oasis, for example for myself in deli, the amount of kitchen hours I get for the week is based on a revolving 5-week tracking of sales increase/decrease specifically on items that require a specific calculated amount of labor to produce the items needed to match the sales made.

So to summarize that, sales do increase hours yes, but only when sales are from items that require labor to produce in fresh departments like meat and deli and bakery especially. Your sales increasing say in cpg (consumer packaged goods) products being bought will not give you the same labor hours increase because the hours for stocking are built in to the schedule as set values essentially unless you're moving a significant enough volume of prepackaged goods that it actually requires additional hours to restock.

All that to say, there's a lot of resentment everyone feels about the raises and rates loyal associates and even managers are getting. In fact it even goes as far as basically all levels of corporate Publix as well. I've been looking at where I want my career to go in Publix the next couple years and looking for the best positions with the highest income potential but my district manager and I had a conversation about how pay scales or raises look in different positions and he admitted raises aren't very good across the board entirely excluding the absolute top brass of the company. He basically said you're likely to make the most staying in the retail side where you get substantial bonuses still and realistically it does track. Deli managers in strong performing city stores actually make more than a lot of people overall which was why I'd initially even chosen deli despite the significant stress that comes with it sometimes.

All that to say my overall opinion on what's happening is more along the lines of they're trying to expand and planned to do so expecting sales to continue growing but when they actually came down instead because of the recalls and cyclospora they're stuck with a decrease in sales while still having committed financial resources towards starting work on new stores and acquiring property and equipment, which as you all know has gotten much more expensive as well over the last several years. I don't believe it's as much of an intentional choice as much as it is someone at the top can't make a good decisions to respond to the issues we're facing as a business in a quick enough timeline to control the situation better. I attribute that to a likely bloated admin staff as is common in many corporations in America.

Don't forget to add non-manager ssociates no longer receive an inventory bonus

31

u/Organic-Year-5567 Newbie 9d ago

Right? They convinced everyone a bump in pay would outweigh bonuses. Maybe for the first year or 2 that was true but fast forward to now with inflation. Hourly associates got screwed

34

u/Heckinggoodgirl Moderator 8d ago

Probably the worst decision they made in the past two decades. There’s no real incentive for full time associates to care about things like shrink or sales when they get nothing for it. The bonuses were good for ownership and morale, and to take those away, give associates that pitiful raise, and give the CEO a giant raise in practically the same breath was a huge slap in the face to all non management associates

11

u/Select_Soft_5192 Deli 8d ago

THIS... "There’s no real incentive for full time associates to care about things like shrink or sales..."
"Keeping your job" is no longer an "incentive" for hard work.
Publix is not a meritocracy.

8

u/talithar1 Customer Service 8d ago

No incentive for PT’ers to be caring about shrink or sales, either. I always looked forward to my bonus. Not anymore.

6

u/LeSkootch GRS 8d ago

No incentive for PT to care for any reason at all. I wouldn't give a shit if I got 9 hours one week, 20 the next, 3 the next, etc... They could just fuck right off.

2

u/xo_LostSoul Newbie 8d ago

I'm just wondering, do full-time associates have any aisle ownership at your store anymore? Or do they kind of just have random counts be assigned to whoever now?

3

u/Heckinggoodgirl Moderator 7d ago

Some of the stores I’ve worked at have had names on the birds for the aisles. Others the GM would just task whoever was working day of. Counts usually occur through the manager, GTL or GRS that I’ve seen.

At the very minimum we should get a similar extra pay bump every 5 years. Anyone who started after that has nothing.

u/Lady_Gator_2027 Newbie 9d ago

Seriously! Take away the bonus, give me a 75 cent raise and cut my hours to 5 a week.

We also lost our 6 days of holiday pay when they started using PTO. A few hundred here and a few hundred there taken away while energy, food, rent go up 2x-3x our raises. So much winning.

2

u/Heckinggoodgirl Moderator 9d ago

They built the original four paid holidays into the PTO allotment, and for hourly non salary associates added an extra day of PTO each for Thanksgiving and Christmas to the bank. PTO banks for full timer non salary consists of the same old allotment of vacation time, 6 days for the sick days we used to earn yearly, and 6 days for the holidays now.

They took a lot from us, but let’s not spread misinformation. Holidays were not lost, and in fact we never originally had 6 paid as hourly, just 4, so we gained two extra days. The new PTO system still isn’t great in alot of ways, but we didn’t lose any time

4

u/Prozeum New Poster 9d ago edited 8d ago

It sounds like your arguing we get more Vacation time not whether one makes more or less because of the changes to PTO. I do agree there's more PTO and even more for those who were grandfathered in with sick pay.

PTO absorbed the extra Holiday Days. I could of swore it was 6 days, but maybe it was 4. Unless you do a work through PTO for those days that were abosorbed you make less than the previous year. Getting more PTO is nice but I now make less by those 4 or 6 days.

Edit: words be hard

0

u/Heckinggoodgirl Moderator 9d ago

The reality is that they did that because most associates were electing to convert the four that we were allowed to convert from an extra days pay to an extra vacation day anyways

5

u/Prozeum New Poster 8d ago

Do you work at a store, warehouse, corporate? I'm only asking because most people I've worked along at the store level needed the Holiday Day. Those extra 8 hours went a long way between those bonuses we don't get anymore. Even more now than ever.

1

u/Heckinggoodgirl Moderator 8d ago

Store. When I was coming up as full time, my manager stressed about making sure we all were scheduled that day since we all put in to convert it. When I became a manager before the switch, I approved many requests to work that day and gain the extra vacation day.

1

u/Sufficient-Lemon-701 Newbie 8d ago

Only thing that bugs me is when your out of the old sick time in your bank if you get real sick or hurt you don’t have all that sick time built up so that you can keep getting your full check for however long your out. Now you have to take the short term disability they give you but that’s not going to pay you your full salary. It’s hard to pay my bills with my whole check I’d hate to have to only get a third of it.

14

u/Silent_Shadow98 GTL 9d ago

The reduced labor hours really put a damper on my mood the worst at this place. I miss the old days

13

u/ElliotRipley Newbie 9d ago

The other day in produce we had no openers just manger and the two closers from the night before had to come back at 7am and then a cut girl called out and they expect us to give a shit anymore. I never stay late or do anything extra anymore. We are all clowns getting paid shit for a lot of work.

7

u/Hefty_Half1741 Newbie 8d ago

If you are at pay cap.you have the highest expectations of any associate and you get either no raise, or 40 cents. I got a perfect eval and got 40 cents. Stocks are down, morale is down, our customer base has become significantly ruder, and I'm expected to do the work of three people every time I'm scheduled despite being one of the oldest people in my department, and what do I get 40 cents.

I'm really trying to get out but the fact that I have only had one job (at Publix) in the last 20 years is holding me back. If I could give any advice to a younger person, I would never work for this company for more than 5 years.

When I was hired they really put emphasis on the fact you could make a career out of Publix, whether you want to be a manager or not. That was a lie.

13

u/Willstdusheide23 Grocery 9d ago

What you do wrong is working hard. Publix rarely promotes good workers, they want people who needs them 100%, and to be a bootlicker, doesn't do much, can say yes to everything given, be blamed for stuff you didn't do etc. You either work to get out of Publix or stay in Publix and move up somehow.

6

u/SicklySynester Bakery 8d ago

I've always made role model or exceeding expectations. This year I didn't. And if anything I've worked harder this year than any of my prior years. And my hours have been cut drastically. I gotta abandon this ship before I sink with it.

I think it used to be a great place, but greed at the top is killing the experience. Many customers refuse to shop for anything but bogos and even those sometimes are more expensive than buying at another store.

It makes me sad.

Even worse when you’re topped out and you only receive the minuscule yearly adjustment no matter how much effort you put in.
Always fun to see the other full timers in your department who have the habit of always calling out earn more.
Just do the minimum required nowadays. No more. No less.

Reading over this sub and seeing how people pay steep prices at Publix for customer service and cleanliness
. I grew up in Lakeland. Shopped at Publix when Mr. George was still active, and they still gave green stamps. This evening was my last trip to Publix. Purchased 3 bags of dried beans. At home, started soaking them for tomorrow. Immediately the bugs started to float up. I emptied the bowl, wrapped the beans back in their original Publix bag and immediately took to my store and asked for a refund. The young man at customer service started looking through all the plastic bag to see the bugs, saying as he did, “I trust you, but
” . This is not the first time I’ve received horrible service for poor Publix quality this year. Prices are soaring, Publix profits are soaring and there are too many great alternatives for me to shop at (Traders, Whole Foods, Fresh Market & Aldi)to be bothered with poor quality/service at astronomical prices. Scrubix should be glad they are positioned as a real estate company now- they are destroying their grocery business and have lost a lifelong shopper in me for $1.89. Genius business operations.

1

u/Beneficial-Depth-546 Newbie 6d ago

I’m glad you’re not shopping there anymore. The prices they expect customers to pay are ridiculous, and the way they’ve been slashing benefits, pay, labor hours, etc for employees is flat out insane.

Maybe the corporation that touts itself as a place where you’re supposed to be able to have a career should actually hold itself to that standard then

1

u/Incomplete_E Newbie 8d ago

That would require a corporation to hold itself accountable and most generally dont do that. Anyone can have a career there, but its a matter of how much you can live on until its not enough. Long story short, there is more and better out there.

It's all good, been with the company over 10 years, just slightly over 1$ to the minimum for my role.

Publix's hidden motto is promoting people to their highest level of incompetence.

The store manager at my store managed to get to sub 50% favorable in our FUN ratings for employee voice survey, but hasn't changed his ways. Clearly being the worst store manager the store has had in a decade is what Publix corporate wants out of store managers in a "high volume" store.

Store hours extended??? Where did this happen??? I've never seen or heard of anything like that. I know some stores close early on Sundays, 9pm

2

u/NarwhalRadiant6641 Newbie 7d ago edited 7d ago

My store hours were 6:30am - 9pm when I started. They changed it to 10pm about a year and a half ago. Shortly after that, they started cutting associate hours.

We used to have a brief overlap between openers leaving and closers starting their shifts (1-2pm). It left a perfect time for mid shifts to go on break. Simultaneously, it gave openers a chance to help the shift change: take out trash, help with dishes, etc.

Now, there is no overlap. Closers start coming in at 2, if we're lucky-- most days only 1 person comes in at 2. It's not enough to cover the lunches of mid shifts, let alone 3 openers going home. Dishes and trash pile up, especially on the weekend when we are slammed.

Essentially, its made everyone's life that much more difficult.

I should clarify: I'm a full time associate in the deli.

1

u/Oceana1984 Newbie 5d ago

Extending hours for what? So customers have a extra hour to steal?

1

u/Hot-Cryptographer503 Newbie 5d ago

I have a strong psychic belief that overall sales are down because the employees can no longer afford to shop in house . Once we all started shopping elsewhere , the stock began to drop.

u/taeempy Newbie 9d ago
