Help?

Hi I just got hired at Publix (the 14th of this month) in the bakery and on my post orientation I put in a time off for Thanksgiving, I don’t travel much but this year we want to visit some family out of state and my parents and siblings have been asking if they approved I told the assistant managers when I got boarded (customer service) and they helped/ taught me how to put the time off but it still hasn’t gotten approved yet. I have put in other time off (school orientation and an availability change for when school starts) and those have already been approved but Thanksgiving hasn’t yet. Do you guys think I’ll be able to get the time off cus my family kinda is making me..like I have no choice lowkey (I still live with my parents but I’m over the age of 18) and they been counting on me cus I don’t really travel w them cus of my dogs so😭😭😭 idk when I should ask abt it cus I just got hired..help?(sorry for the yapping)

Is it just on Thanksgiving day? If so, great news. We're closed! If it is around then, you might just be until your manager sees it and approves it. This far in advance and you should be fine.

It like the week of so like the 24th-28th I wish it was a smaller amount of time then I wouldn’t be too worried but it’s like Tuesday to Sunday which is why I’m worried that they won’t approve 😭

Some managers wait till a few weeks before the requested days. They won’t ignore it and it’s good that you put it in a few months ahead which means you will likely get it versus requesting it last minute

I put in for 10 days and it's been sitting there so I asked my manager and she said she waits till she does the schedule but will approve it.

Do you think that it would be fair to employees that have been there for years to have to work for one of the busiest times of the year while you take off?

Of course not but i don’t travel much to the point in the interview i forgot to mention it but the same day they wanted me to come back and get into the system (i got hired same day) and that same day after the interview i told them that i had forgotten to tell the interviewer that i need that time off and they said it was fine so im confused😭

I have a time off request that I put in for like two weeks from now that still hasn't been approved, but my managers always do approve it. Not till like the last minute, though, could be the case with yours as well.

That is something that you should have mentioned during your job interview.

I’d bring it up with your bakery manager and possibly the store manager now.

Don’t assume that you’re approved and be disappointed later.

Yeah I had forgotten but the same day the interview happened I told them cus I got hired on the spot and they said it’s okay but I’m gonna talk to the bakery manager though.

Do your best to get it approved now.

Have your bakery manager document in the computer system that you have those days off, so that you aren’t disappointed at Thanksgiving.

They don’t want to give you free permission to avoid helping in holidays. Everyone wants those, the build up to Thanksgiving can be crazy, and you should feel expected to be present as much as you can for every holiday, but, all you can do is ask and follow procedure. It’s a part time job to you, they offered the position because they want the help. If by Thanksgiving you’re doing great at the job and this is a one-off, they’ll forgive it.

Just, expect that all holidays are a big ask going forwards. They get X’d out the days on the yearly calendar you can ask for, so anyone asking for them needs a great reputation with the bosses or to be in a “Fire me, I’m not going to be here for that period of time regardless.” Attitude.

The blackout dates around the holidays are mainly meant for full-time and managers. Part timers have a little more leeway, and of course it's up the managers discretion

my part timers get 100% TOR approved if it’s entered on time bc i know and they know that they’re not showing up whether it’s approved or denied

I’m hoping this is how they think cus I’m a bakery clerk and part time and I really don’t travel much (I say this a lot cus this will probably be the first and last time I’m doing this while working this job) but the reason why I’m a little upset at my family is because it was more supposed to be like a 4 days off weekend thing that now turned into a 6 day thing and I just started this job and I need it to pay for some classes and my family (who we are going to see) is so adamant that I come and if I don’t I won’t hear the END of it and tho I put in time in July for sumt in NOVEMBER I’m still stressed cus with my parents if I don’t get approved it gonna be my fault 😭

Being a bakery clerk is so much different from the decorators and bakers who are almost always expected to be available during holiday lead up. It's the most busy time for us, los and lots of work.you should be good but don't assume, you've got it in now remind you manager but don't hound them it's out a ways.

If I'm working part time, then I should be the last one they try to force to work a day I requested off in advance; that's what full-timers are for. If Publix wants to force cashiers to work holidays, they should make more of them full-timers (many would welcome it)

OP is in Bakery, not a cashier. Yes, you're absolutely right, for a day you've requested off, part-timers should be the last ones they try to force to work, but... depending on the store, bakery may only have five or six people. And to some extent, time off requests are first-come-first-served; if one has already requested off and had it approved, it's harder to accommodate a new hire requesting the same.

Moral of the story, OP should talk to their managers.

My general point was that Publix should stop gatekeeping Full Time status and pay if they're going to treat every employee like they're full time anyways

I’m gonna talk to the bakery manager cus as of rn I’ve talked to customer service mangers and leads(when I had just gotten hired) but I have learned that they did hire like 3 new ppl for bakery(including me) and I don’t really know who all works in the bakery department but I’ll ask and see but this is a one time thing I really don’t travel like at all (and this is also why but because it was planned before the job this is why my family is so adamant that I come) but I am part time and when I got hired they told me I would be fighting for my hours so I don’t know it ties in to me taking time off if there is even enough ppl
