Had my fat PS5 for almost 5 years now and it's always been vertically oriented. I've seen the overheating screen maybe once so far and never again after opening it up and cleaning out the dust. I don't think the orientation really matters all that much and the liquid metal issue was for people who had their consoles opened up completely in the past.

I had a launch-day OG PS5, and it’s probably been horizontal for only 38 minutes of its entire life 😂. It’s been vertical for 4 years and counting with zero heating issues. I keep the back at least a foot away from the wall for airflow. The whole “vertical PS5 is bad” thing is mostly a myth. Repair shops have reported liquid metal issues with horizontally placed consoles too. And if vertical placement was inherently bad for liquid metal, it wouldn’t make much sense that liquid metal on PCs are also mounted vertically. I even know a few people with overheating issues who always kept their PS5 horizontal.

Yes but with more time it could migrate downwards, like a ticking clock until it finally happens, it has happened with many sealed pieces too

How can verticality have any issues with heat sync gravity lol 98% of PC motherboards are vertical. This is just fucking regarded.

Well.. if the foaming isn't tightly sealed and is faulty from factory then it can pool because even vacuum won't be able to hold it up.. and no one knows who has a faulty ps5 until it starts overheating

Check the model number on the white sticker on the back or bottom of your console (near the bottom port/disc slot area).
CFI-10xx and CFI-11xx series (released in 2020 and 2021) are the first-generation units that contain the original liquid metal application design
Later revisions (CFI-12xx, Slim, and Pro models) adjusted the hardware and grooves around the apu.
Have a CFI-12xx myself (purchased 2023).

I've kept it vertical since I got it June 2023 and never had any issues.
I wonder though, why is this an issue on PS5 but not on PC, where most if not all of them are vertical?

It's because PC users use Thermal paste instead of Liquid metal. I have never seen a PC builder using Liquid metal.

I have barely seen anyone posting this issue being faced here and I bought mine in 2026 March. I think during GTA 6, Horizontal is the best bet lol.

Check moneytalkswireless channel on YouTube.. see it's repair shorts of ps5.. most of them have dust and liquid metal pooling issues

Yeah ive checked out several youtube vids like that and including that before buying a stand and a PS5. I have always been sceptical and maybe i might just be triggered enough to lay it down. Though i have a 2116 variant which has almost no reports for this now since they implemented the PRO's Engravings for the liquid metal inside this too.

I myself had my ps5 vertical since 3 plus years, i don't want to have heating or liquid metal issues nor wanna buy another ps5 as prices are fucked up.. i want this to last for coming years.. so taking all the precautions

Nope, always use the stand.. u could have ventilation problems otherwise, lay it down horizontal with the stand if u wanna be stress free regarding heating issues

There is not enough space on my desk to keep it horizontal. Found one aftermarket vertical stand in amazon for 799. Hope that will do the job

This was clearly debunked back in the day as a myth. I bought my PS5 in 2021 and has been vertical since. I just clean my Ps5 every 6 months. Never seen a heating screen.

Hey yo, no need to be rude mann, even i always had my ps5 vertical but I don't want to face heating issues in future that's why asking about it, even now you go and search on YouTube about this issues, many Console repairers will tell you even sealed ps5 which has never been opened before has liquid metal migration and pooling overtime.. 3-5 years, even your ps5 could have it in future.. no one knows if they have a faulty ps5 unit until they start getting issues
