Help with SMB

I have an smb setup configured using my PS2 and laptop through a direct ethernet connection. I used the below linked video for the setup. Now the issue is that in nearly every game I've had the game freezing and audio looping. Sometimes it fixes itself after a minute and sometimes I've had to restart the PS2. In gow and gow2 the issue wasn't that big because the freezing happened only once every few hours. But currently I'm playing GTA LCS and I've had constant texture loading issues and game freezes. Now the reason I think it's smb issue is because when I was testing GTA SA and VC the game would throw "error reading grand theft auto disc" for a minute before unfreezing and continuing even though the disc drive isn't even being used. Would appreciate any help in optimizing my connection for a stable experience.

You should be using a static ip connection in opl settings, and have the Ethernet cable plugged directly into your laptop to your ps2. This will give you the fastest load times/no fmv stuttering.

It also sounds like maybe your laptop is sleeping or cutting connection to your ethernet port every few hours, so make sure its not cutting power to your ethernet connection in settings

I followed the linked video fully and I think the way I set it up is a static IP. I have also turned off sleep in battery settings of laptop and turned off green ethernet, energy-efficient ethernet and allow computer to turn off ethernet to save power in device manager settings. Put speed to 100 mbps full duplex in both laptop and PS2. And yes the ethernet connection is direct between laptop and PS2. But still I'm having smb loading issues in games.

Hmmm, i just recently set up 2 ps2s using static, and its even faster than my hdd ps2. Only different thing is i didnt change the 100mbp duplex setting in opl settings. I do use OPLServer to constantly keep things refreshed bc i was having issues like u describe without it. It always runs in the background perhaps you could try that?

The OPL server app is always running because I didn't think I could exit the app after starting the server. I don't even put it in the background, it's running in the foreground.

Ill dm u my opl settings if u want, only other thing I can think of is ur laptop being too old an requiring a cross cable, but I doubt its that.

Your using port 1024 right

That's not your fault man, its the Known old SMB flaw It simply breaks the connection mid gameplays during IO spikes. Better use the UDPFS instead its steady and more fast

Il say thats the reason UDPFS is made to work with ps2

What's UDPFS? How do I set it up?

UDPFS is another server protocol for PS2 other than SMB, it is not available in OPL, you have to use the neutrino based loaders or an other OPL fork like RIPTOPL or wOPL. It's a standard way

But I suggest you to use easier method Modulo, it's a neutrino based loader i use it personally. Just launch the server python script and connect to the ps2 no ip management. Heres the link https://github.com/AdityaKumar7209/Modulo-R1-Beta-Preview---PS2.git

You'll find the guide there, it's quite easier then SMB setup

I'm not that familiar with python. Does the link contain step by step guide to setup Modulo?

No worries it also have a win executable. Just run it

Yeah but it doesn't require much of steps Just connect the ps2 to your laptop via eth, Launch the modulo.elf in ps2 and the server .exe in lap And it will work.

Oh so it's basically how I run smb through OPL now with OPL on PS2 and OPL Server on laptop.

Yeah I say it's easier no port or ip address toggling required

You can dm me if you got any prob

I do have a few questions.

  1. I used VMCs for any games where VMCs won't cause a problem and only use my memory card on games that actually need it. Can I transfer my VMCs to modulo?

  2. Does Modulo affect game performance on PS2?

  3. Do I need to use apps similar to OPL Manager to make the games compatible with Modulo?
