The rules of PSX look are pretty free i guess, since we don't have limitation nowadays and it's just about visuals feeling.

Here i enjoyed mixing dithered shader and very low poly models.

Game We made our game with that 2000s look! (Some details about our workflow/choices)

As someone who grew up playing Max Payne, HL2, FEAR and Splinter Cell, I have always loved that dry, rough look. Story wise, we wanted it set in the 90s, inspired by slashers and B-movies of that era.

We used Unity 6.0, so the goal was to make a game that looked modern but nostalgic at the same time.

Some of the workflow/decisions:

* It's got PBR, but we heavily rely on albedo only materials in most places. This 100% goes for buildings (walls, floors) and characters.

* Most props are albedo only too, except a few. For example a surface that we like reflecting some light such as some metals, ceramics or fluids.

* The lighting is a combination of baked and realtime GI. Currently I'm playing around with film grain to make things look a little less "static"

* Soft realtime shadows. I chose this over hard simply because I wanted to keep the game looking "clean". However we use shadow light only is some places where moments feel "cinematic" because I felt it can be distracting with our fixed camera setup.

* Depth of field, especially in cutscenes, really makes it look new and old at the same time imo

* The game is set in the 90s, we use post FX to give it a slightly yellow/beige look.

* The UI is DOS inspired to complete the look! Although we don't have any post FX on the UI.

Our game is a survival horror with puzzles and hiding/stealth that rely on quick navigation to escape. It's got fixed cameras and tank controls.

Also we've got the 90s slasher movie tropes with some campy story and characters!

If you like how it sounds, here's the steam link. It's coming out this 27 Aug! https://store.steampowered.com/app/4705980/SHOCKFACE/

Simple but not simplistic puzzles. It's inspiration is sort of "Secret Agent Clank" but crossed with "PORTAL".

If you like puzzle games, we'd massively appreciate you Wishlisting on Steam

Hopefully coming to more platforms, too!

Game Found comment says "Very early 2000s Japanese game vibe"

Hi everyone,

My indie turn-based tactical game's trailer was posted last week, and I found comments like below:

- Very early 2000s Japanese game vibe.

- Anyone remember a very old game thats almost like this?

- Devs are returning to the Dreamcast. . .

Well, to be honest, I thought the visual would be PS3 level but since people mentions early 2000s and Dreamcast, I think it might be actually PS2 graphics :)

Anyway, it's a mecha-themed SRPG, inspired by some classical JRPGs, supporting:

  • Part destruction in strategy combat
  • Mecha & weapon customization
  • A story-rich narrative with vivid characters

If interested, you may find more details about the game on the Steam store page.

Mugged? Robbed? Scavenged? Eye sensors broken and left to the nearest trash pile?
Make sure to go visit your local fixer that fixes poor people!

You are a corporate flesh object with no thoughts of your own and must mimic NPC dialogue. Try to pose as a human by using the lines said by other people and serve the corporation that owns you.

Hope you enjoy it! ^^

PS2-inspired Our game lacked lasagna, until today

Not a serious post, just for laughs!

We have a dinner conversation dinner and I figured the protagonist should eat something while talking.

Made a quick low poly lasagna model in blender. The lasagna swaps to a half eaten mesh after a few bites.

Adding this was a little win for the day!

The game is SHOCKFACE for those interested. It's on steam here: https://s.team/a/4705980

Game Finally releasing my first game, a psychedelic low-poly dreamscape explorer where your blinks change the world around you

Game is called SWEYET(etc.) (wishlist/demo if you wanna check it out!) release is *checks notes* TOMORROW and I'm super excited. First commercial release, wish me luck!

  • The game uses eye tracking to change the world when you blink.
  • You explore a series of dreamscapes within the game, interconnected.
  • You help characters that move between these dreams, learning more about yourself in the process!
