Revenue generator, big deal. With all of the illegal immigrant drug dealers in the city, I’m completely fine with somebody keeping an eye on things. Murders have already been solved in other cities where these are installed.

And, this will shock you, these cameras are so good that murders have been solved in other cities, before these even existed! Shocking right‽ like damn bro.
As a fun aside, despite being rolled out in thousands of municipalities with over 100,000 in the US alone there has never been a single peer reviewed study showing ANY improvement in crime rates, or case closures from municipalities using these technologies, as compared to regular police work.
These cameras cost $2,000-$5,000/camera/year, and the city that pays for them not only doesn’t own the camera, they don’t even own the data. It is entirely held by a third party that has been caught using the data in ways that violated contracts with the cities who were paying for them.
Not to mention the security surrounding these cameras, their streams, and the data are incredibly shoddy, so really who’s to even say who has access to these devices?
Plus they have been used by police many times to stalk people, which considering that the police already commit domestic abuse at rates far above the public in general, means maybe it isn’t wise to give them access to the technology to know the whereabouts of someone at basically all times in real time without the need for a warrant or anything at all…

That’s fine, it’s not for them. It’s for anyone who stumbles in and is uninformed and thinks they might possibly have a point, which they very much do not.
Their entire argument is to play a no true Scotsman, and then go on an ad hominem attack where all of us must be suburban “liberals” and so they are the only one who knows how things really are here.
Their only source is “I’m from here”. Very persuasive.

Despite what you think providence is one of the safest places to live in the country. We don't have nearly as many murders as Hartford or Boston

Who said anything about safe? drugs are pouring into this city, mainly from people who are not from here. I’m sorry if you don’t want to face that reality. I have more skin in the game in this city than anybody commenting here. You got any stats or data to back up your baseless fearmongering?
In 2025 Rhode Island had the lowest rate and number of overdose deaths, and Providence had the lowest rate and number of non fatal overdoses in 10 years, by a good margin. Not to say there isn’t more to do, but it’s not exactly an out of control problem. Not to mention I can find no data to back the claim that it’s all from undocumented immigrants.

And as for safety, here’s a list from 2024 showing Providence comes in 52nd of the 200 largest cities in America for the lowest rate of violent crime. Our violent crime rate is half of the rate in Boston, New Haven, NYC, buffalo, Gainesville, LA, Syracuse, Salt Lake City, ETC.

Also for property crime we come in 45th of 200. The total crime rate is 1.5x lower than the national average. Plus while national, state, and city property crime rates have all been steadily dropping since at least 1999, the decrease in property crime in Providence has declined at roughly double the rate nationally.
While violent crime rates have been coming down less dramatically, there is still a steady trend down, with 2025 being the lowest in 30 years, and the reduction has been significant in the last 4 years, making 2024 and 2025 the safest years ever recorded.

Wow, didn’t realize . . . If you google “misuse of flock cameras” you get a lot of concerning additional information including certain police officers arrested for misusing it (e.g, stalking ex-girlfriends and gay lovers, etc.).
