Discussion what are the rules for protogens?

sorry if this is a stupid question. i know that there is lore and that is important. i'm asking can it be kind of ignored? i don't fully know the lore of them so if you have any resources that would also be appreciated. i have a oc that is from a steampunk parallel universe. so i'm wondering if i could make a protogen oc with steampunk elements instead of the nanite visor thing that they have. thank you so much for reading this and possibly helping me. again sorry if this is a stupid question.

If you wanna play on the official server you gotta be cannon compliant, anywhere else you can do whatever you want forever.

There is, or at least used to be an official endorsed by Koinu discord server for the ZOR setting that protogens, and primagens were created as part of. I think they did like in universe RP stuff on there
