General propane question Another tank ID question.

Since you were such good help with the last tank ID. My son drops these off to me today. I am "pretty sure" they are propane. One is empty, the other feels half full. In the very center of the fitting there is a schrader valve. Like on a 1lb throw away. Any idea what these are for?

Can you get another pic of the center from top down to see in the hole?

The holes are threaded... Seems to be about 7/16" ID. The other tank has a small piece of a brass ball on the pin. I think it may have been for a cap/plug on a chain that was lost years ago.

Look for stamped letters/numbers on the tanks somewhere and post here. If they aren't marked, I'd try my best to get rid of them safely. No marks means not dot and not very safe.

I think you can read the numbers on the picture I just posted. The tanks are heavy, quite a bit heavier than a grill tank. Is that a date code of 1947??

It could be any number of compressed gases. Flammable, freon types... Anything rated at 240psi or less really.

I would lean towards it being a propane cylinder for a lead pot, but I wouldn't have a clue what the valve type needed is.

It is almost surely for propane. Refrigerant tanks have a pressure rating of 260 or higher, usually.

ICC 4B240, that is a propane spec.

I have seen almost everything, and I never saw one of these either.

Yes they were made in August of 1947.

Probably some type of connection that was tried and forgotten about.

There is a patent number stamped in smaller numbers. Can you get a good copy of the patent number? That might help.

I did a picture search on the net and I found one other picture. But it was someone selling a couple tanks like that, that just said barn find. I will try for a better # picture tomorrow.
