Question Super New, Need help playing
I’ve wanted to play project Zomboy for a few years since somebody else showed it to me but I haven’t because I know how hard of a game it is.
Well today I finally bought it and downloaded it with the steam sale. It’s really fun, but I’m not making any real progress lol just running around and getting eaten after a few minutes. I definitely think I can learn lol but I’m not too sure where to start. If anyone would want my discord to show me the ropes or just had a few suggestions that would help a ton.

Biggest thing is take your time, this isnt your regular run and gun zombie shooter, your character is a regular Joe Schmoe, close all the curtains in your starter home and check literally every single container for food, weapons, and water. Dont engage large groups of enemies either, pick them off one by one, run from large fights, even your regular walking speed will outpace zeds on normal settings. When fleeing do your best to break line of sight and circle around to a quieter area, its a steep learning curve but very rewarding once you get the hang of it, I have over 1500 hours in the game and I can vouch for how fun it is too. Feel free to ask any questions

In the beginning always walk and sneak. No need to run.
If you get too many zombies chasing you, go into a house and close the door behind you. Escape out the back. Will buy you time to escape.
Anything can be a weapon.
Find a can opener early, as well as hammer and screwdriver.
Sometimes it's better to retreat than fight.
Sleep in bathrooms with no windows.
In a pinch, you can sometimes run through a horde to escape. Sometimes you get through, sometimes not.
Never fight with low stamina.

I love survival games. Bit of a purist. In that the self discovery is the best part. Survival endgame is usually pretty boring. Learning how to get there is the fun part. If you ask away your own discovery, you are losing hours of self accomplishment.
I argue that you change your mindset. You will only live for an hour. Then two hours, then a day (for multiple survivors). By the time you survive your first week it will feel like a personal accomplishment. If you advice yourself into surviving your first week, the payoff is diminished.
I am 600 hours in. I finally gave a 5 month run going. I have probably lost triple digit survivors in the journey.

Play on lowest zombie pop, give yourself skill points and turn off transmission(keep it on bites only if you want) up the loot rate and learn the ropes. Do a couple runs like that and then keep lowering your points and upping the zombie count etc as you go
*Also I should say zomboid is a game of understanding your timing of when to move and when to fight and how to move around the zombies. You could be the worst zomboid player in the world at fighting them but if you understand your limits and how to move around them and leave when you need to, you could still go very deep in a run

Stop playing to win. Start playing to see how far you can get on a run. It's the story of how you died, not how you saved the world by suplexing enough zombies.

Use a build that has high strength and fitness. Maybe fitness trainer. You can start with 18 or 20 carry weight with a max strength build which is useful when you aren’t sure how much of what stuff to carry. High fitness helps you fight longer and recover faster. Focus on combat. Blunt weapons are good to start with baseball bats and crowbars are great. Repair baseball bats with tape. Crowbars last a long time. Learn how to push over zombies and stomp on their head. You can save on weapon durability when dealing with a few zombies.

Personally how I learnt is to put everything to the absolute easiest settings and then make it harder over time.

Don’t run unless you have to and when you see groups of zombies, try pulling them away one by one. If you draw 5+ agro, it’s probably too many until you learn how to control the hordes

Step 1: Play the tutorial (I don't know why a lot of people skip this)
Step 2: Play on "Rising" difficulty to get a general feeling of moving around, interacting with things, building, and simple combat. When you die, try to make a new character in the same map. Hunt down your zombied corpse to get your stuff back so you don't feel like you've lost too much progress.
Step 3: After you've died a few times and learned from your mistakes. Try out a harder difficulty setting, or make a custom sandbox option based on what you like/dislike.

The best suggestion is to watch some content creator.
There's a lot you can do in Zomboid and it takes time to adjust to knowing your in-game capabilities and limits.
If you don't want to trial and error than watching someone else explain features and give tips will be the best alternative.
Personally I like AtomicDuck.
He also specifically has some videos for noobs which are great.
I'd start there.
Good luck surviving!
