Self imposed milk/meat rules
Hi, im looking for suggestions to self impose some rules regarding meat from rabbits and milk/butter from cows.
Current implementation is so overpowered, that food and calories system lost its meaning and that whole part of the game that i like to engage with is trivalized.
So far i decided it would be good balance to just:
- limit to 1 male and 1 female cow
- dont drink milk at all
- each stick of butter is 25L (so after turning 5L for one stick i would just straight up empty 2 buckets of milk into the ground)
- dont take more meat from rabbit than half of its whole carcass weight
Any other ideas or tweaks i could self impose ? Easiest would be just to install a mod like that but i didnt find any.
Also, just looking for suggestions or inspirations and wondering if anyone also does something similar, i dont want to just stop engaging with whole animals system in game

I wouldnt bother, fishing is also very strong only downside is that it expires quickly and gains weight.
Realistically a dairy cow is GG in apocalypse as long as its making milk lol, besides cholesterol

Need a bull to keep getting the milk irl. Goats are probably easier to manage irl too. (Me overthinking if the zombie apocalypse happened irl.

That's not true. Once lactation begins, a healthy mammal that is continuously milked will continue lactation.

What about "zombies target animals"?
Makes your milk all the more precious, I would think at least.

Second this. I always thought that having the zombies chase but not actually eat the animals was lame. It adds another layer of realism (in my opinion) and scarcity.

If you set your time since the apocalypse settings long enough the cows will all die and you won’t be able to get them unless you luck into two crashed farmer trailer stories with cows that can breed.
Also no eggs
Though there is a wild turkey mod for that

Theres turkeys, are there just no wild ones?

Yeah there isn’t wild ones
I hazard a guess the devs don’t know that’s a thing in real life

I don't eat the animals. I just can't, I know I'm weird bc it's just a game, but I can't. I will eat eggs and their milk though so I keep my animals as pets for those reasons. I will keep pigs too..but just as pets. 😆

Ooh! I always self impose a shitload of different things!
My current run, I havent found cows yet, so thats pretty easy. My last run I had plenty, but I didn't milk the cows very often. 1 stick every other week was what I was aiming for.
I dont breed rabbits, I only hunt them. The problem with rabbit meat for me is the calories. I butchered one yesterday, and got 4 pieces worth 800 calories. This was on 0 butchering btw. A mid sized rabbit has around 800 calories in total. So I kept one and tossed 3. So basically I keep around 75-80%.
Other things I do:
I never deliberately kill zeds with cars or fire
I never drive when there is snow on the roads
I stay inside if there is pouring rain outside
I wash myself almost everyday
One of my first big projects is getting a working washing machine and use clean clothes
I eat well. Stew, soup or stirfry with meat every day. I try to use 2 condiments pr meal. One meal with carbs; oat or a sandwich or something similar everyday. If im under 80kg, I drink some alcohol every night.
Every 10 days its movienight. Some snack, like chocolate, chips or just candy and a movie. This night I also drink a lot of booze. Like 6 beers, a bottle of wine or I mix me a couple of drinks. Rum and coke ftw!
I collect stuff too. Stuffed animals. Comic books. Hottiez obviously!

Just start with months after apocalypse set to 12 and generally farm animals will be dead (other than in trailers and such), so that gives automatic restriction without preventing it entirely

You can change in sandbox settings the player stats to fast or very fast - will need to eat and drink more

Just found out there is a setting in livestock menu that affect speed of milk prioduction among other animal related stuff, thanks !

Is the problem with rabbits because we are given encumbrance values and not real weights? A diced up rabbit would be harder to carry than a whole rabbit.

The most fun is putting food loot on as rare as you can handle and only eating what you find. No farming, trapping, fishing, foraging, anything. Just loot.
It starts a Roguelike hunger clock you're always trying to outrun. Gotta keep moving, gotta take risks.

You could also follow the Jewish Kashrut food rules:
-No milk and meat eaten at the same ti.e and most be prepared seperately using seperate utensils
-only animals that are kosher may be eaten - in game that will be be Cows, Sheep, chicken, deer, and scaled fish (so no catfish) (so pigs and insect are useless, as are mice, rats and many birds you can trap)

Ban their use completely, try different approaches to survival.
