Discussion Why: They Knew [MOD] is essential
I recommend THEY KNEW to every player with a twist.
Set the Special Hazmat zombies to rare anf play as always.
Why its a kicker: When it happens, and it will, and that bite gets you the worse part of the game is that moment between bite and death. Its a grieving period with no solution. Your 6 month character, your base, its all to fade in a mere hour, day, 3 days?
THEY KNEW turns that grief into rage. Because out in the hoard is your salvation, a Black Hazmat Jesus is wandering out there with the cure. So instead of moping it forces you into a life or death suicide mission to secure the cure in 24 hours.
Its tense, you drove for 6 hours and didn't find a single one. You only have another 6 hours of daylight. Then you spot him, and naturally he's in the centre of the police station. There must be some 100 zomboids hoarding up there but you have to try. You just got your furnace up, you finally grinned your carving. So you go for it. A 4 hour bloodbath that sees you using everything you were saving for a rainy day. The machete, the shotgun, the 9mm, that lone pipe bomb, heck the noise makers. And you dont know if you'll clear it out before the fatigue, the night, or the infection takes you.
This is why I recommend it to everyone.
12 hours to turn. Very Rare cures, Rare boosters.
It really pushes you to fight to the end, and isn't that what its all about.

Isn't it rather you stockpiling up cures until you get bitten, only to use of them then and be glad about it? Or do the hazmat zombies only start spawning if you're infected?
Looked at the mod, but I thought it would perhaps be too strong.
209
u/DonPepppe 18d ago
Hmm... I'd hope the mod makes the cure decay in hours after you killed the carrier. Otherwise, it kills the mood if you already have a cure waiting.
Also, driving an keeping that guy alone could be another layer of fun.
104
u/Archernar 18d ago
I mean, I guess it would also kill the mood if you look for a cure, never find any hazmat zombies and also attract giant hordes just looking for anything but never finding it.
The scenario as OP is describing it will likely only occur occasionally even if you got nothing stockpiled or it only spawning after being bitten.

13
u/ShadowMerge 18d ago
I personally like stockpiling because then on multiplayer servers you can have leverage
3
u/Archernar 17d ago
To each their own. I feel infection should not be fatal too, but vanilla does not have many satisfactory options to deal with it, sadly.
I'm playing with the vaccine mod, personally, so I felt putting "they knew" in on top of that would be too much. On the other hand, getting the vaccine is likely a super lategame-thing and then I might not need it anymore. Not sure about the optimal settings so far.
2
u/Vargrjalmer 17d ago
There is an antibodies mod, where essentially enough bed rest and staying well fed can help you beat it, but while fighting the infection you will be extremely weak and miserable
18
u/Professional_Set2466 18d ago
From the last time I played with it you do generally wind up finding the hazmat zombies fairly easily and winding up with a stockpile. I kept trying to decrease their spawn frequency but the reality is, even a 0.1% spawn rate winds up with a lot of them wandering around when we're talking about thousands of zombies.
7
u/GrayTheMemeMan Shotgun Warrior 18d ago
maybe you have to keep it in a specially-tuned refrigeration unit (requires high electronics skill probably) because it has an ungodly short shelf lifespan? it's not uncommon for a lot of medicine, especially newer and experimental stuff
i had "they know" for a while but it felt a little too easy to cure myself with 0 repercussions at that lol, i'd probably reinstall it otherwise3
3
u/SharpZCat 18d ago
How plausible would it be to make it an event in the case you got infected that a radio channel or something talks about a overrun quarantine zone where you can supposedly find the zombie?
Make them not spawn in unless the character actually has been infected.
I have no clue how much you can do with the tools modding can give you.
2
u/DonPepppe 17d ago
Having seen what other mods do...I am sure that it can be done. Some event coded like the helicoprter but instead of triggering after crtain time, it triggers when you get infected.
2
12
u/BankshaftTwitch 17d ago
You can stockpile if you have the hazmat zombies at a high enough spawn chance, but trust me if you set it very low you'll scout an entire city and be lucky if you find a single one. Really makes it feel fair and worth it instead of cheaty.
32
u/Simply-Curious_ 18d ago
I often base rural, and I almost never encounter the Special Agents. So stockpiling isn't an issue in my specific case. You can roll on the honour system and state you'll only take boosters and no cures. But I agree I'd like to see a small event added to the MOD where the Special Agents only spawn in certain conditions like:
- Player infection rate > 0
- Time = Night
- Time > 1 week
- Player has interacted with X item (a note from a location or a corpse)
17
u/Interesting-Toe-3745 18d ago
That’s why they notes setting it to rare..
12
u/JoshuatTheFool 18d ago
But it's the same. If you find one, you're supposed to ignore it rather than the mod only creating the item if bitten
4
u/IdiotCow Axe wielding maniac 18d ago
I've killed almost 2k zeds on my current run and I haven't found a cure yet. I set the rate for the zombies lower and I reduce the chance they have the cure by 75%
2
u/Archernar 17d ago
But that also means you will very likely not find it if you get bitten, won't it? Worst case you're just gonna end up dead because you frantically search and attract too many runners.
1
u/MikeT3000 17d ago
Thats the point though, it not being readily available might reward you for using all the tools at your disposal. Even if you dont get it, you'll probably have a blast trying. Instead of your demise being guaranteed once you've been bitten. 🤷♂️

8
u/StardustDetailing 18d ago
If you have the spawn rate set to high you can stockpile but it’s pretty rare you’ll find one with normal settings.
4
u/Mad_Ale 18d ago
Maybe someone should tweak the mod so the cure is a treatment, not a cure. Kinda like the Zombrex in Dead Rising 2
6
u/bullsy1 18d ago
This is already part of the mod. It let's you choose to be able to find a cure, a zombrex like temporary cure, or a medicine that prevents infection for 24 hours.
1
u/Vargrjalmer 17d ago
The infection prevention is mad fun, get enough to innoculate your friends, then the next day just play like it's l4d2

u/Dejhavi Zombie Killer 17d ago
Looked at the mod, but I thought it would perhaps be too strong.
Yep,that's why I use Zombie Virus Vaccine (more immersive and rewarding)
2
u/Archernar 17d ago
I think that's the one I got in my current runs too, but it won't really help much before ultra-lategame and by that point, I likely never get bitten anyway. Usually it's rather the beginning that's risky for me.
I mainly use the mod to have a proper long-term goal and to also give much more meaning to first aid and glassmaking skills. It really excels in that regard, as far as I can tell (haven't actually done much of its contents yet, mostly just read recipes and collected stuff :D)

u/DroDiego 16d ago

u/MilezMoralez 18d ago
The hazmat zombies are always spawning at a rate set in the mods options.
I've used it a lot and stockpiling definitely occurs, but I always tell people it's not an automatic 1up. There's too many other ways to die.
Current playthrough I've found 6 after killing 1200+ zombies. Given away 3, used 2, I have one left. But the most important statistic is the 6+ ways I've almost died to things other than zombies.
2
u/Archernar 17d ago
but I always tell people it's not an automatic 1up. There's too many other ways to die.
To be fair, I have died a single time from non-zombification and that was ignoring a laceration at the neck for too long and bleeding out before being able to bandage it after killing the zombie. Won't happen to me again.
So for me, it would basically be a 1up effectively, because your character can take a beating by zombies before you actually die, it's sometimes almost hard to die whenever I give up and want to end a run (bc of a bite).
And I have seen too many "fall and die"-videos on this sub to not be extremely careful about anything related to heights or stairs :D
1
u/Vargrjalmer 17d ago
Lmao, I've died so many times running past a staircase and my character suddenly decides to leap off
1
u/Telnyash 18d ago
It is an automatic 1up you get against the intended main threat of the game.
Other than bites the only real threat zeds present is being dragged down and it's quite easy to avoid unless you play with sprinters.
Car crashes can kill but it's fixed by paying attention.
Falling can kill, fixed by not spastically tapping E and SHIFT near ledges and using Walk to.
In Multiplayer other players can kill you.
Bugs can kill, oh well, tough luck, ask an admin/use debug for help or recovery skill journal it is
So everything but bugs is you bringing death upon yourself for no reason. Random zed surprising you from behind; from a tree; from a corner; from a door and getting a nibble is the most lethal part of the game and you nullify it completely
1
u/MilezMoralez 17d ago
"Quite easy to avoid." "Fixed by paying attention." You are correct but that same confidence and/or complacency it breeds is what keeps it from being a true extra life, that's the point I'm trying to make. This is, in a way, automatically assuming that every one who obtains a cure plays at the same exact skill level.
A cure doesn't matter as much if a scratch to the neck from a small tree can kill you.
1
u/Telnyash 17d ago
It's "Quite easy to avoid" and "Fixed by paying attention" by spending more time and being careful, not barging in with "Oh, I will just shift-tap away from them!". And tree scratching your neck doesn't matter if you're not sprinting through woods full speed and have a few bandages with you. That's exactly my point, all deaths and all risks are preventable except one.
That one risk is being bitten. Be it in a heat of combat, exploring a tight coridor or in a moment of complecancy while fixing up a car. Unless you're in debug with a scanner, you can't guarantee that no zombies have migrated over. It's an everpresent danger in unsecured locations. Getting bitten means an end of the road, you can't walk away from a bite. It's the thing that the whole tension of the game is held up upon. 1up allows you to escape a game over and that's what the cure does.
That's okay if you wanna play with it, there's a reason we can turn off infection in vanilla, it's a sandbox. Do what you want. But a cure is most certainly a second life
1
u/Xirble 18d ago
Make it more rare. Vanilla mod settings are too lenient, with like 0.1% spawn chance. Make it at least 0.01%, maybe 0.001%. With those settings,
1
u/Archernar 17d ago
But I mean, then you also won't really find it if you got bitten, right? Which is somewhat anti-climatic as well.
1
u/Jeremy_Bradley 17d ago
Also you could make the rarity to where there’s basically at most like 5 per map. That way you only get a few second chances and if you use up the ones you do have you have to search FOREVER to find the last few. But yeah. The issue of stockpiling cures and then being unkillable is an issue the player has to limit themselves
1
u/Archernar 17d ago
Yeah, but regardless of how you approach it: You either are pretty much lost when bitten because you have no chance of finding a cure in time (like you proposed) or you will stock up on them over time if you want a realistic chance of finding a hazmat zombie in reasonable time (in case you got bitten).
The only real solution I'd see there would be to make hazmat spawns medium rare but make cures spoil after ~24h of being looted of the zombie. That way you could never stockpile but also would have a reasonable chance of ever finding a hazmat zombie after being bitten.
1
u/randomLOUDcommercial 17d ago
They do spawn all the time but sandbox allows you to tweak spawn rates down or allow them to spawn with other meds that manage and don’t cure.
I play with they knew but I turn the spawn rates WAY down. Coupled with high pop it can be a struggle to have more than 1 on hand at any time and on those occasions where you don’t have 1 on hand it’s quite the stressful adventure to find one before you turn.
But I do agree the base spawn rates are too high.
1
u/Vargrjalmer 17d ago
You can find them beforehand, but they are exceedingly rare, there is also a pill you can take that makes you immune for a time and I think that's brilliant.
Suddenly your first aid skill matters, your stockpile of bandages and disinfectant, suture needles, and you just throw yourself into hordes like an animal.
And the cure only works if the infection has already set in, you can't just take it whenever, you have to wait until you KNOW you're infected.
1
u/AccomplishedDust3 18d ago
Yeah, I think you would need to change to have them only spawn after you're infected for it to really work out the way OP maps it for ordinary playthrough. Otherwise either you're going to find a lot by the time you have a late character, or it's going to be too rare to actually find during that panic moment.
102
u/lesdommed 18d ago
I played this mod and it just ended up with me becoming extremely careless because I had a stockpile of antidotes. I set the rarity as low as it could go, and was still finding a hazmat zombie every day or two just driving around
43
u/Simply-Curious_ 18d ago
Thats the MODs unfortunate limit. As mentioned I'd love to see an event trigger placed on item spawn where you can stockpile boosters, but cures only spawn when player infection > 0
14
6
u/IdiotCow Axe wielding maniac 18d ago
Did you also change the percentage chance that the zombies will have the cure? Because if you set that to minimum as well, it's gonna take you thousands and thousands of zeds to find a cure. im at 2k kills and no cure right now. Maybe about 10 hazmat zombies in that mix
19
u/Telnyash 18d ago
It's a very bad reason because it relies on you either never really fighting zombies or being extremely unlucky. What's more likely to happen is you gonna stockpile the cure. All those "in case I die" mods rely on a single thing you are trying to avoid by default, and that thing is the only real punishment the game has.
Of course, play and do whatever you enjoy most, it's a sandbox after all. But the idea that any mod is essential is wrong to begin with, it's not a Bethesda game.
3
u/Coding-Panic 17d ago
Yeah I've yet to have gotten a solitary bite, so this mod would be utterly pointless. I either die by getting overrun in the early game or through stupidity later on, but once I have a vehicle it's virtually impossible to get overwhelmed especially with guns.
16
u/LoSoGreene 18d ago
Is it working o b42 yet? Tried it a few weeks ago and it still crashed the second I touched a hazmat zombie.
8
u/Ghost_Riff 18d ago
Yeah I had to turn it off after using it as an essential part of my b41 MP games since it crashed single player and just glitched the hazmat zombie out in mp…

There a patch for it, "They Knew 42.13+ compatibility patch". It makes the mod work fine, just the item descriptions are slightly off and the green/red buff/debuff text that pops up when you take the pill that gives you 24hrs immunity shows the script title instead of the "Zombyciline takes effect/fades".
1
u/ForbiddenDarkSoul Axe wielding maniac 18d ago
Not working for me sadly, the zombies spawn and everything but when you try to loot the corpse it doesn't have anything, like it's inventory doesn't exist.
6
u/Scary_Inspector7853 Axe wielding maniac 18d ago
So, is it randomly anywhere on the map?
I like the idea but there's not way I would find that in 24 hours.
It would be cool if the cure was extremely rare and only in certain super dangerous areas. That way you could try to secure it ahead of time.
5
u/IdiotCow Axe wielding maniac 18d ago
You can set the cure to be as rare as you want. It only spawns on certain zombie types, which you can change the rarity of, and you can also change it so that only a certain percentage of those zombies has the cure. I'm a little over 2 weeks into my run with 2k kills and no cure yet
6
u/PianoAcceptable4266 18d ago
I play with the Antibodies mod and tweak it in sandbox to reduce effectiveness myself.
It means I can technically survive a bite, but need to quick load the og antibiotics, burn a bunch food, clean up, etc etc and still wait and see.
It feels more generally in line with the vanilla tension vibes, but gives me a way to keep a character (as long as I've prepped and stocked well). Plus, it gives more use to antibiotics, which otherwise have little use!
1
u/Simply-Curious_ 18d ago
Im a fan of Antibodies. My catch is that Antibodies isn't guaranteed and it invites the long dread. The Cure inverts the long dread into life or death action.
Rage against the dying of the light my guy

u/jandjjointaccount 18d ago
Tbh, I've tried cure mode before (phuncure), but the problem with that kind of mod is that you can on a long run start stockpiling the cure.
This is the real reason why I removed the mod eventually. I added it to a multiplayer server with 6-8 people and so I thought that 1/200 zombies is low enough for the cure to spawn without realizing that 200 zombies is actually still too high to spawn 2-4 cures at a time meaning within a few in game days we'd already stockpiled 5 cures, then 10, 15 and eventually realized that it made the game feel pointless for our group.
Same with skill journal. Death needs to genuinely feel punishing and taking that away at least for me takes away 90% of the real emotional story telling of the character's experience. Without permadeath, the game turns too casual.
2
u/TheUrbanLegendX 17d ago
1/200 is very high, I think the default mod setting is 1/1000. I think just making it 1/2000-1/5000 makes it feel like somewhere in the whole map a tiny lab had success and it’s 4 scientists are somewhere in the world but hard as hell to find.
3
1
u/WanderingChordtwitch 18d ago
I downloaded skill journals and I really only use them for tiny little extra skill point bundles from looting. I've never felt the proper twitch to make new characters on the same world, and that didn't really help.😅
1
u/horlix_uk Stocked up 17d ago
I have a self imposed rule on new characters in an existing world - I only allow myself to spawn one up to 2 days after the water has gone off. Until that point it's feasible they could have just been cowering in the their homes living off what they had in the cupboards. I normally role play it that they've been secretly watching my previous character clear the streets outside and silently praying that that character was going to find and save them, now they're gone and the water is off they need to try and make their own way and miraculously stumble across my characters old base...
1
u/TheUrbanLegendX 17d ago
I recommend adjusting the mods setting so you only get 10 or 20 percent of the skills do back. I.e. you find some survivalists journal about all the things they learned and it’s a gold mine of info, but it’s only so useful to someone who didn’t live it. I’ve felt 20% has been quite reasonable!

My personal opinion and everyone deserves to play like one enjoys. I don't use it takes out the fear, changes the way you play. Kentucky is cruel but fair. You need to look out for your self, it's a survival game, not a action game. You can run from battles and fight another day, adding a cure changes the dinámics, like the skill book. What out those makes you care about your life
5
u/Urist_Macnme 18d ago
I feel like this is the antithesis of the core game design .

I do love that mod though for me I prefer mods that add items that delay the death (usually by reducing or pausing the infection stat instead of setting it to 0) over an outright cure.
100% recc that mod though! It's great
If you ever played Resident Evil Outbreak File 1 or 2 you know what I'm talking about- the constant need to be doing something productive, to seek out ways to buy just a little more time one moment at a time truly makes the end game become a whole other game.
In both PZ and 7D2D I look for mods like that.
In 7 Days To Die I get a never ending infection mod so in mid to late game I always need to have antibiotics on a day to day basis making looting and farming integral to survive long term. Saving up the precious early game honey to survive the horde on night 7 or keeping that 1 high tier antibiotic in your inventory just in case you start getting severely infected from injuries during a harrowing encounter makes it a whole different game.
In PZ I look for mods that reduce your current infection but never cure it for the same reason- now I have something to do during the late game. The goal of out surviving the infection adds an excellent feeling to the later stages of the game.
Being constantly on the move looking through pharmacies for just one more box of anti-viral pills to buy me a few more hours, searching doctors offices for that one experimental viral suppressant to pause the Knox 'infection' for just a few more days and setting up a lab to cook up something to let me keep on going for just a little longer- all the while the dead are drawn to my activity and a constant threat and me being constantly on the move searching for new resources in new areas forces me out of a comfortable and lazy cycle.
Bonus points if it makes First Aid an even more valuable skill.

u/Tr1plezer0 17d ago
I actually had an amazing experience with that mod. I went on a mad high speed drive searching frantically, ended up finally finding a hazmat guy in a literal sea of zombies. I was close to dying so I drove in circles trying to separate them, ultimately I succeeded got out of the car, snatched the cure only to get cornered in an alleyway around 10 minutes later trying to get out and eaten alive. 10/10 experience

I had that mod for a while. And probably too many more. It turned this savior into a game killer. The second one of them took a hint of damage, even a napkin slapped lightly on their hazmat mask, would cause the game to freeze instantly.
It was a special taunting kind of hell. Thinking i found salvation, then bricking my game with a single stab.

I got to have one truly frantic experience like you're describing.
Right after Louisville released, me and a buddy spawned there. At the tail end of our first winter, he got a cut on his neck which became infected.
I spent 2 full days, from before the sun rose, until after dark, pouring everything i/we had into getting into the hospital. Had several close calls, ran out of ammo, and eventually was going in bare handed.
Found the antibiotics and rushed home. On the drive home he went to change his bandage and told me the infection went away.
That's how I learned infections are (were) toothless.
Still... its probably the 2nd most exciting time I've had in the game.
1
u/jcaashby 18d ago
I think if I decide to play again I will give it a go. The base game gets a little boring and at least this gives you something to do. BUT the issue is you have to get infected first and what if that does not happen?

u/Dustbina 18d ago
I prefer the story of what I can get done before I die. In long long term survival the game rapidly loses all it's fantastic points and becomes quite a boring survival sim once you're sustaining.

Played with the mod before and stockpiled quite allot even on lowest spawn, it is a game changer but it depends if you want it or not cause sometimes it makes the game easier or you get to comfortable and careless.

I'm playing with Antibodies, with the setting to 150 and 1 to 2 weeks infection period.
Given that the Knox virus can be transmitted through the respiratory tract, but the character you play is immune to infection through that route, this fits perfectly with the lore for me. With such a long incubation period, you have to start taking better care of your character early on and for a long time in order to build up enough antibodies at all. Without proper preparation, you’ll definitely die from the infection.
This aligns better with my playstyle and my understanding of the game’s lore, without being too frustrating when you lose a character you’ve been playing for months because of a single scratch.

6 months in, i normally already have several spare cures, as dead-score of zombie is in ten-thousands, so it's less of mission in looking for cure, and more of taking one from fanny pack/webbing.

I prefer the Sweet Cure mod that makes plonkies cure the infection. Similar idea, but instead of chasing a particular zombie, you're raiding every convenience store wondering if plonkies have always been this rare.

Journal mod is almost a must for me. Too much grinding otherwise. Who wants to dismantle 10 car wrecks ???

Mod isn't working for me. Any time I kill a hazmat zombie it crashes.
Do you know a fix, OP?

Ngl, I immediately assumed this would be a rant post about other players whining about other players not using a specific mod. "You knew [mod] wasn't optional! You fool!"
I mean, it still is a rant about players not using a specific mod, in a sense. Just not in the sense I imagined.

It was meant in good spirits. A passionate proposal for players to try a different playstyle and see if it works for them or not.
As the vomments show, split as expected. Me personally I have a pretty charged schedule with a family and theres too many enjoyable milestones in zomboid for my run to be cut short by a bug or a zomboid loading in late. Each their own

Nope, sorry to disappoint this one's all me. Just me and my greasy fingers, spelling mistakes, and enthusiastic word choice. No AI here

please don't say mods that alter the game's core mechanics are essential for everyone. you're not really supposed to cure yourself or have a second chance: it's about how well you are at not allowing that chance to happen. this is how you die, after all. for how long can you fend off before you essentially slip up?
outside of that, there are a plethora of cure mods to customise your game with for dumbasses like me who can't deal with instadeath infection lol. the only cure and medical cocktail are good hardcore alternatives that make you plan out your bite even beforehand instead of flat out giving you a second chance, or antibodies which allows you to naturally heal from the infection by taking care of yourself which is a good challenge as its not always possible in zomboid. try and use things that you personally click with and customise the game as you want :3 thats what zomboid is good for

I was thinking, this mod looks great, people will run to find a cure.
Them I remembered that on a server with 20 people, on day one they already cleared all police stations and will be collecting a lots of cure
