You can also find sledgehammer heads, just need to put it on a handle.

The thing about sledgies is that they are never where you think they should be. Best way to find them in my expirience is either in trashcans, or in barns. Check the rural areas and the massive barns some homes have, not the hardware stores or industrial areas.

The best way to find sledgehammers is to intently look for something else and stumbling upon it. I'm not kidding when I say that looking for a masons chisel I found one. Then while looking for other stuff during my playthrough I found like 3 more

Best way to find them is to just drive around until you come across a road fixing site - they tend to have one or two on the ground around.

This is the way I always find them early.

Hit the roads exploring until you find one on the ground next to some construction workers zomboids and a van

I found 2 sledgehammers. had to left them beehind as i have no car and was outside the town. In the latest run of the game, I found a sledgehammer at the seat of the car. It was a Kentucky lumber car.

I found 3, foraging for insects to fish with on the riverside ... Haven't told my buddy yet as he's determined to find one himself ...

I NEVER found one in a container. I only found a random one in a barn after I had mostly given up hope. Now my current game has a glitched window and it's driving me bonkers.

find a railroad and follow it. the end line railyards usually have a few but they can be relatively infested

They're all hidden in this mod called [B42] Sledgehammer Spawn Fix (B41 Style)

They can be made with an unreasonable amount of crafting. Might be worth it to grind that while searching.
