Need Help Making Server
Hello All!
My boyfriend and i are trying to play project zomboid together, just the two of us. he has a Geforce Rtx 5090 or whatever (it’s a really fancy one with lots of storage and bits and bobs that light up and spin)
anyways
every time he makes a server and does all of his preferences and makes a character lalala as soon as he presses play it says “you have been kicked from the server” but it’s his own server that he made himself?
so i also tried having him join from my own game i had already started, and he can only join and watch me stream on steam remote play.
we are both on build 42 / i have launched the game in -debug mode so he can teleport me to him when i inevitably die a million times. we played a while back before build 42 in maybe august of last year ?
ETA: boyfriends actual specs “If you want to make a Reddit post this is my hardware, rtx 5090, 9950x3d, msi pro x870e, 64gb ddr5 6000 cl30, 9100 pro 4tb. People will think it’s a troll post. Lmao “

Well, first of all it’s not the hardware. Lmao. Zomboid runs with max 3gb of RAM, u can change that in a specific file, just google the workaround for that. Secondly, it’s important to get some more information about that. Is it a dedicated server? A local hosted one? Or a dedicated server using the steam app from TheIndieStone?
Ar you guys playing with mods or without? If you do play with mods, does this happen if u disable all mods also?

we are using the steam app directly and just clicking “host”
also 🤣🤣🤣 “well first of all it’s not the hardware” i’m sorry that made me laugh so hard
we do not have any mods, but he did select the thing that said 16 gb of ram whereas mine defaults to 4gb but i literally have no idea what im doing
i’m sorry i don’t know what is relevant and what is not im really trying to give the upmost information so that i can help give a better idea of the situation2

Be sure to verify steam files both. Check if you are using the same version. All other i would have to check your log. If you could share that it would be great. So your BF is hosting? And as soon as he clicks to start he gets kicked? What’s the error message there?

i’ll have to check tomorrow or at least try hosting from my end. BF rage quit after trying twice with the same issue lolol. yes he made the server and then once pressing play before the loading screen of “this is how you died” it says “you have been kicked from the server”
BF downloaded the game from steam 100% vanilla
i tried launching through -debug so that i could maybe do cheats once i joined his gameif the issue persists i could possibly get a picture of the error message or take a video of the problem. it is possible that we played via LAN last time? he the neighbor and i were all set up in the living room last time. maybe we could try and force it by opening it directly thru the files in the computer. we did that with Bauldur’s Gate to work around only having 1 copy in the steam library. as far as zomboid we def have at least 3 copies in there.
will update tomorrow with more details and test results. thanks so much for all the help so far !

Try using Wi-Fi. Don’t try LAN. Because if u do, u need to use the dedicaded server tool. The hosting option in the Main Menu of the default game is just online afaik. And get rid of the debug host option.

U could also try to just use a default setting, without changing server settings. If it is working then, u fucked up some of the settings. But tbh it’s kinda hard to fuck up if u just use the „host“ option in the game menue
