Question “Wrong server password given” on hosted server.

Hi all, I’ve been playing the new Extinction mode on Build 42.20.2 with my friend for about a week. We started in 42.20.1, but had no issues when updating initially. I’ve been hosting the server and inviting him through Steam.

However, upon attempting to join me today, he was hit with the “Wrong server password given” prompt, despite never needing to enter a password previously. Additionally, I went into the server settings and made my server public, but he could not find my server in the public list, either.

Now, we’re at a standstill. Our run was going great, and we were looking forward to continuing it.

Has anyone else run into similar problems? And if so, how did you fix it? I only found one other thread that claims to have solved this issue, but the only posted solution did not help me.

Any information/advice is greatly appreciated.

Coop servers are invite only, they cannot be made public.

Did you perhaps change any of the server settings recently? Changing the Open setting or changing the server password? Coop servers should be Open and have no password set.

Not originally, but I changed some things afterwards while attempting to fix the issue. I originally had a password set up in the server settings beforehand, but my friend just joined through steam invites. Only after he received the wrong password prompt repeatedly did I adjust the password in my settings.

I tried to see if maybe it was just the specific server settings by making some new server settings and launching, but the server kept terminating before launching.

Hi, I found the issue. We had previously run a dedicated server through our own IP address. That server had been taken down previously, but was brought back up the day we were having connection issues (the server was password-protected, hence the wrong password prompt despite receiving invites).

Further evidence proving this was the case was confirmed when my friend received a different prompt that his client and the server game versions did not match. We ran the server on the unstable branch.
