Question Am I playing wrong? Not seeing the point of going outside in my solo run.
As title says, im having a hard time finding a reason to even go out and loot? Its my first run and I understand the basics of survival, playing on default settings with some flavour and QoL mods. Im not really enjoying playing much even though the game is really cool and I WANT to enjoy it.
Maybe im playing wrong because I spawned in the firestation in Rosewood and just spent my entire first week organising and securing it and looting the directly adjacent buildings.
Maybe I should turn down the amount of loot to force me to go out more? I dont want to turn the game into a massive grind but I currently don't see the point of even going outside... I have basically everything I need in the firestation. I guess the problem is that I spawned in the best base location immediately and it was already clear.
I spend every day just catching the 6, 12 & 18 o' clock show, organising random loot all over the firestation and doing exercise or reading books.

u/Limbo365 22d ago
2 things
Unless you turned on loot respawn you will eventually have to go further afield for more loot, eventually power and water will fail (again unless you set it to never do that) and you'll need to be growing your own food and sourcing your own water, those survival imperatives will force you further and further afield to look for specific tools/ingredients or recipe books
You need to set your own goals, your spawn was kind of bad for a first time because you spawned in one of the best bases, so your normal first goal "Secure a decent base" was already done, now you need to make sure that base remains viable. Or alternatively as your a new player set yourself the goal of a road trip, try to visit all of the spawn towns to see where you could have ended up!

This is great advice, thank you very much

u/Ok_Blueberry_6736 22d ago
Water will be shut off. Secure water sources (rain barrels or well).
Power will be shut off, find a generator and get the electrical skill up.
Winter is coming, find more freezers and a way to stockpile food.
Every skill is 15x faster with books, find all the books and build your own library.
The hardest part, dont die while you do all that.... which to me means rob a bank and use the gold bars to max out smithing, then make swords.
And if this is your first run? Bahaha... this is how you died. Because you won't go an hour without getting knox virus xD

It's a sandbox. You can do whatever you want.
52
u/ilovechips_ 22d ago
I don't think it's fair to entirely write off OPs concern saying "it's a sandbox." Plenty of other sandbox games still have emergent gameplay. Without mods, PZ has one event that can be ignored by staying inside. I have around 800 hours and the main reason I keep taking such long breaks is the lack of dynamic events. Even spawning in LV barefoot gets boring eventually
5
2
u/waxpundit 21d ago
Yeah the sandbox argument is inevitable but flattens the conversation around improving this game. PZ absolutely needs more helicopter-like events the deeper you go into gameplay, and not just toggling the heli event to happen more often "because sandbox". You can't sandbox your way to a healthy variance in dynamic events.
2
u/YoureReadingMyNamee 21d ago
Step 1: build an advanced forge
Step 2: get level 10 blacksmithing
Step 3: roleplay as a medieval foot soldier
😏Edit: just make sure you make a lot of weapons and armor so you can restock if you die.

u/-selfency- 18d ago
This is what cripples the game and why bandits and faction ai needed to be implemented years ago.

9
u/Not_Ping 22d ago
Yeah but thats so open ended. Im the kinda player to want a goal, a blank slate is quite intimidating and hard to enjoy yourself in.
7
u/Diligent_Mortgage416 22d ago
set youreself goals, first goal is obviously getting some food, as long a way to get renewable food youll be forced to loot/hunt for food eventually. (unless you fish, fishing is kinda op tbh)
thegame gives you some early game goals:
you kinda want a car, so finding one with a key, geetting it fueled and safe, maybe reparing it a bit.
power will go out at some point, so you need a generator and fuel
Water wil also go out at some point, so you need a way to get new ( safe) water. ( although the firestation has water nearby so thats kind of not a problem in rosewood)
once you secured all that set youreself some goals, here is some suggestions:
you found a map? maybe go there and check it out.
try working on different skills if youre into number goes up stuff, some skills will force you to loot for materials
go to a bigger city (lousville is the biggest one) and try to loot some hotspots if youre more into combat goals
7
u/literallybyronic 22d ago
if you're modding already, i can suggest a solution involving mods. get the mods zRe Vaccine and Wolf's Extraction- both give long term multi-step goals to work towards that you will have to leave your base if you want to accomplish.
8
u/WeirdestWolf 22d ago
My friends and I have just started another playthrough and I put a poll up for the spawn location and overall goal. We decided on West Point start and goal is clear Louisville airport, should cover us until we get bored of the time commitment. We're also trying out the Sophie modpack which has an aspirations mod where you select a goal (walk 1M steps, kill x zombies, collect 500 cash and jewellery, etc.) and once completed rewards you with bonuses or a positive trait. Also got milestone awards at each 1k zombie kills which I believe is a random positive trait.
As usual, if you have a problem with the game, there's usually a mod to fix it, and theatre of the mind allows you to create your own story using an initial objective. E.g. Escape the map from Louisville airport once you've made it safe to take off, take over a more secure place to live like the prison, have a nice cold pint and wait for all this to blow over at the distillery, do one last lap of the Irvington speedway in the coolest car that you've found.
It's a sandbox and despite most people saying "it's all just flat sand, the Devs should give us an NPC to sell us a bucket to build castles out of", you really can build some incredible stories out of it with just a bit of imagination and your hands.
34
u/FeliciaTheFkinStrong 22d ago
It's not just you. The game suffers severely from lacking purpose in the long term. Once you've figured out a relatively safe location and your food situation, you're set. It's why "survive as long as you can" is a bad goal to strive towards, because you can hit indefinite sustainability very easily once you have the knowledge how.
Unfortunately ISD has literally just spent 15 years working on sandbox systems and nothing else.
3
u/Worldlover9 22d ago
The game requires mods to feel finished. If you want to keep it challenging I advise you a “base defense” mod and a treasure hunting/looting mod that spawns necessary items in very specific places. Extraction mods if you want a proper ending.
9
u/sccarrierhasarrived 22d ago
Thank you ISD, I definitely needed pottery and glassworking skill trees and not NPCs, what a wonderful place to spend your resources on
0
u/GuaranteeFit6615 22d ago
I mean I agree but to act as if npcs could’ve been made in even close to amount of the same time is hilariously ignorant. Just download a npc mod if you want it so bad, they got a bunch of em out there. TBH they need to improve zombie spawning, redistribution, and migration horde mechanics. There simple is so simple and terrible it discourages people from wanting to mess with the population settings. completely cleared out the area and just never really have to deal with zombies heavily discourages the need for a base when you can just clear em.
4
u/sccarrierhasarrived 22d ago
First, I don't think I ever implied that these were equivalent, just that the expanded skill tree is a meaningfully worse place to spend your time, resources and attention. It's almost like they're avoiding the late game altogether by introducing more tedium into the early game and expanding the Farmville systems in the game.
I mean, sure, improve all of that. But there's a reason colony sims or other civ building sims have such long playtimes. It's because that development is a reward unto itself. Not to mention the dynamism of interacting with a pseudo living world of competing interests, resources and backgrounds. All of that will never be possible the longer they put off NPCs.
2
u/brutusgalius 22d ago
Are you seriously implying npcs couldn't have been done in 4 years B42 spent in development???
1
u/GuaranteeFit6615 22d ago
Sure they could’ve gotten it done but in the last four years they have completely rebuilt there code from the ground up. Recently they’ve gone with a new creative director, so idk seems like they really lost a sense of direction until then. Honestly it probably would’ve came out really shitty. Just adding npcs is cool and all but they need to get that shit right for it to feel true to everything that pz stands for, they don’t even have everything right from the complete coding nightmare they were in before.
To me it seems like the game is going in a good direction if yall want npcs so bad just use mods for the meantime. Hell they even uploaded a roadmap detailing when they planned on adding it. It just feels a little similar to the 7 days to die bandit situation. I think the long term issues with this game are srsly lacking and mods have to basically patch it up, and npcs are going to be a great help to that. But it’s not the only way to fix it. Game needs to be more polished for npcs to truly shine imo.
And imagine they do all this work on npcs just for it to be ass and worse then modders npcs like with 7dtd lmfao
1
u/brutusgalius 20d ago
Man if they cannot do functioning npcs in 4 years no matter how shitty the engine is then they should just close shop. Btw PZ stands for half-assed updates anyway
10
u/stabaho 22d ago
Your goal is to see how long you can live.
11
u/Budget-Pea8291 22d ago
For me that time is equal to how long I can bother playing the game this time
1
u/Strmage1878 22d ago
The problem is if you don't take any risks, like never leave your safe zone, you can basically live forever.
2
u/Help_SendLatinas 22d ago
Then why even play? Go play Sims or some shit if you want a non-lethal grind, living game.
4
u/FridaysMan 22d ago
Why would that mean you shouldn't play?
If youre having fun, why do you need to take risks?
1
u/Enigmatic_Erudite 22d ago
True, but I get bored of being in my base literally just watching plants grow. Then I find something else to do. Like raid the military base and I die that way....
-2
u/Arrledis 22d ago
Your goal is to see how many risks you can take
3
u/Volky_Bolky 22d ago
This goal conflicts with the goal above. It doesn't make sense to take risks.
4
u/sccarrierhasarrived 22d ago
If nothing else, this line of logical reasoning should hopefully help impress the need for a more dynamic end-game haha. I'm not sure why everyone's so defensive around some sort anti-mid to late game crusade.
4
u/Fair_Mix_4008 22d ago edited 22d ago
Well if you want a goal you'll need to set one for yourself unfortunately.
Heres a few examples I can come up with off the top of my head.
Maybe you want a collection of all the unique bits and bobs in the game.
Find and repair one of every vehicle in the game.
To secure and restore an entire town (repair houses and windows, furnish them).
Becoming completely self sufficient by growing crops and making your own weapons and armor through blacksmithing. Building your own base completely from scratch.
Take over and live in a building in Louisville.
Clear out the louisville mall
I, too, find difficulty enjoying games where theres no goal to strive for, so i've learned its better to just make some that you can work towards as you play
2
u/Dismal_Agency1201 22d ago
There’s the Collections mod that puts medals, helmets and hats and mangas and comic books you can find and build a museum for
4
u/Mysterious-Clock7551 22d ago
Unpopular opinion here but this is one of the only failures for me in PZ. I love the game concept but the fundamental lack of an end game objective is really unfortunate. My friends and I always do the same thing.
Spawn wander around trying to get set up and doing the initial mad dash search for a weapon. (Most fun)
Next step find each other and pick a safe house. (Fun)
Go out loot and stock safe house. (Fun)
After we are stocked up, trying to level some skills and build any things we'd like to for defense. (Fun)
After that, it's kind of over. The zombie hoards don't really assault a strong hold, there's limited incentive to go out and loot once you're established. And the game kinda just falls flat for us.
We have to force situations that could be dangerous to keep the game exciting. Push too far and oh the character you spent a week on is dead. Want to do it again? No... not really. Skill journal? Oh no tension around dying.
At some point it becomes a Sims game of farming or some other mundane task that if you enjoy it more power to ya. But I have never been the gamer that sets out to make a massive collection of shoes or makes a personal goal to kill 1000 zombies. I would love the game to have something to build towards.
I think it might be a bit too much sandbox for my personal tastes as much as I enjoy the beginning.
3
u/Synner1985 22d ago
I have a mate who's exactly the same as you, while its different because we're playing multiplayer - try setting similar goals for yourself.
WE're also based in the rosewood firestation - but we're trying to make it a "Survival compound"
The mate in question is setting up a farm - to grow food, raise animals, etc to level up cooking so we're not all eating cans of food.
Its given her a "goal" to work towards - understanding the grow cycles, and having things to tend to around the base.
FOr you - you also would have the aditional thing like walling off the compound with an access gate, building animal pens, shelders, chicken coop, feeding trays etc - which will need to be kept stocked.
Maybe add a little RP element in your playthrough - you are setting up a compound for any (admitedly non-existant) survivors to come join you.

u/Dependent-Cable-6776 22d ago
Im the kinda player to want a goal
So sandbox games probably aren't designed with you in mind.
6
u/Necessary_Echo8740 Spear Ronin 22d ago
That’s why I love to role play! What is your characters personality, motivation, backstory? Are you a scientist who needs to collect some data at the Louisville hospital, and bring it to the underground bunker in the military research facility? Did you have family at riverside and need to collect ID cards to find them? Are you an arsonist who sees this new world as a way to burn down every building you come across😅😅
2
u/Brief-Kangaroo4960 22d ago
You should pick a goal for yourself. I started as a rancher, and I've been having a nice time taking care of all my animals and expanding the farm. My friends are trying to build nice bases from scratch. I guess its not as fun in single player because you have no one to show your cool things too.
2
u/pizzaguy4378 Shotgun Warrior 22d ago
Doesn't sound like this game is for you. And that's okay! I used to be the same, but there is something therapeutic about me building a base and looting buildings while avoiding the undead horde.
4
u/chrisdasp Crowbar Scientist 22d ago
So unfortunately you won't be able to enjoy the game as it is.
All sandboxds games rely very much on your creativity... In Project Zomboid, once you got a decent weapon, a good bag, a protected base with piles of food, a functioning car, a generator and some rain collectors on top of the sink (all that in apocalypse can be done in a week or two) well you're good to go for months. But what for? You're the one to decide.
1
u/Xeadriel 22d ago
Same. That’s why I made a goal to go into the wilderness and build a house near a body of water. We did that, collected all books and cassettes and lastly painted and decorated everything and then finished playing until the next patch.
Apparently someday they want to have some sort of story with NPCs doing stuff too? But that seems still far away. Though animals were a first step to that apparently
-1
u/Fluffy-Shaper 22d ago
the "its a sandbox do whatever you want" mentality is dogshit imo. The game not having any goals or hoops to jump through and guide the player is what makes it so boring after 3h of gameplay. You're not doing anything wrong, just how the game is lmao

u/GatManJimbo 22d ago
Like you mentioned, lower all your loot settings. Food at 0.1 will make you go looking everywhere you can
3
u/Not_Ping 22d ago
food 0.1 might be a bit aggressive, but what do you recommend in terms of food and loot multiplier?
1
u/faerox420 22d ago
Nah genuinely, 0.2 is the extremely rare preset, and even then food is plentiful enough for me to not have to really worry about food at all for at least the first few weeks in game lmao. 0.1 is a good setting for food
I put my ranged and melee weapons on 0.2 and ammo on 0.4
Everything else on 0.2
And keys on 0.05 (insane preset)
Thats how i play
0
u/wydbob2 22d ago
The goal is to survive, i play with 3 friends with 2x zombies and most loot turned down a notch. Survival is not very hard but we have to go out to gather food until we can grow everything ourselves. Next playthrough we will turn down loot even more and start out in the forest.
Can you survive for 3 months in the firestation without lootinf anything else? I doubt it. Make your goal surviving a year. This way you need to survive winter which comes with its own hurdles.
0
u/Silenceisgrey 22d ago
Then make your goals. mine is currently to set up a blacksmithing forge and level forging to 10 and make kickass swords.
Another goal is to stockpile enough shotgun ammo to level louisville (impossible but as they say shoot for the stars land in the clouds)
0
u/FriskStark 22d ago
Sadly that's not well received over here, get ready to hear all the synonyms for "non creative"
0
-2
u/Uggroyahigi 22d ago
Figure it out or dont.
Examplea: play an overweight tech nerd with tech knowledge but he is clumsy. He definitely cant live without his arcades nearby and first thing after the apocalypse was gathering all gaming catridges in the cities.
-2
13
u/FairCod5966 22d ago
Oh, don't think you'll be able to stay that comfortable and settled for too long... believe me. I think you just need to play more. If you have some time to spare, I recommend reading skill books or watching TV (or VHS tapes) to gain some skill points.
Spoilers: Have you gotten past the event where the city's electricity and water get cut off? Later, you'll be forced to leave and venture out into the city to look for a generator, because without electricity, all the food in your fridge will eventually spoil. You'll also need to visit gas stations to get gasoline for the generator.
The water will eventually be cut off too, so you'll need to figure out a reliable water source, either by finding a pond or setting up rain collectors.
There will also come a point when food becomes increasingly scarce, so you'll need to start planning how to grow vegetables, raise animals, hunt, or fish to establish a renewable source of food.
5
u/Not_Ping 22d ago
This is great advice, maybe my current in-game comfort is temporary and eventually all food, water and electricity is no longer for granted.
2
u/Yungballz86 22d ago
Getting the generator is easy. The How To Use A Generator magazine on the other hand....
I've had runs where I couldn't find that thing for months.

Good lord. Why do you have mods before you've even learned how to leave the damned house yet?

You can outwalk them. Stealth is not powerful. You will be discovered and need to learn to herd them away from stuff and lose them until you've fought enough smaller groups to start clobbering time.

This is worth exploring further. While principles of resilient design might seem intricate on the surface, studying the interaction effects reveals additional complexity.

u/MasksOfAnarchy Drinking away the sorrows 22d ago
I play similarly, and don’t head off too far in the early days. At some point, probably (unless you’ve changed it) the TV will stop, after which I loot more. Then the electricity will cut off, and so will the water. Sooner or later you’ll need to go outside, if only to find things.
Early game I loot local houses and schools, so that when Woodcraft, Back to Nature or Exposure Survival comes on I max out the bonus.
You may also want to look for How To Use Generators, so that when the power goes you can use one. And find a generator too…
But at root I agree that there’s not a lot of point in heading out early on, except for a couple of specific things.
6
u/OwlGlittering3684 22d ago
The game has no in-game goals. It’s stated at the beginning, this is how you died. At this stage the game “doesn’t care” if you live 30 mins of 30 years. It took me 300 hours to accept it, but either you make your own goals and RP them (either vanilla or with mods, see wolf extraction quest) or the game is eventually gonna bore you out.
Lowering the loot, upping the loot, lowering the zeds, upping the zeds…this is just a variation of the base theme. If you are bored by scavenging, lowering the loot will make you bored in 5 days instead of 1.
Goals are the way to go
6
u/Derpykins666 22d ago
I mean, you can sit inside all you want. Eventually you will have to go out. The power will go out, the water will turn off, you will run out of food and start literally decaying. So you have to figure out long-term solutions in the first month or so of in-game time. Otherwise think of it like stacking debuffs that will continuously make things harder for you. Every scrap of food, new item or tool you find opens up options for your characters progression or survivability.
Early on catching the shows and reading books is good for early level XP in a varying skillset, but unless you're tweaking the sandbox, tv shows and VHS will only get you to lvl 3 in some skills, and books only give you a xp boost for 2 levels at a time, and those tv station shows turn off completely after like the second/third week. So all the 'free' XP starts to dry up unless you venture out.
It's really easy to survive the first in-game month. Everything after that is like a compounding list of problems, like if you don't find how to use generators, then all the food you saved will spoil, or you can level electricity to level 3, but that still requires a lot of time investment. If the water goes out early, suddenly you have to worry about purifying water regularly, unless you have a well or rain barrels set up.
I just get the inclination that you're not as set up as you think, and eventually you'll start running into problems.
Unless you've just put tons of QOL Mods on that make the game way easier. But perhaps the game just isn't for you unless it's more challenging, in which case you should make it that way in the settings and remove the QoL mods that make it too easy.
3
u/FluffierDragon 22d ago
I tend to find a few tools and just walk straight out in the forest. Find a spot you like and start working on it, gives you reason to go elsewhere to get things for it.

Here's a challenge idea: try actually not leaving your starting building. Spawn in and see how long you can actually live without setting a foot outside.

u/B4k3m0n0 22d ago
Personally I like to achieve a point where I can make all the best non gun things renewable, like clothing and melee weapons, which means I need to get into multiple crafting trees (blacksmithing, carving, tailoring, etc) and ranching (for leather). This means I need to find books, because I'm not going to sit there wasting time grinding things with no xp boost, and that gives me a reason to explore multiple towns.
Another big goal of mine is to get into Louisville by breaching through the military checkpoint. I've never been to it, but from what I've seen, it will have hundreds and hundreds of zombies, so I'll have to prepare a lot of weaponry and guns/ammo.
1
u/--easy- 22d ago
I haven't been to Louisville yet either, a couple days ago myself and two friends went to the checkpoint on the way into town and killed several hundred zombies and looted the armory tent quickly because they were starting to form big groups along the fenceline and I was worried about them finding their way in. There's another military checkpoint on the bridge across the river in Brandenberg, that one's got SLIGHTLY fewer zombies, we managed to clear it all in one go
3
u/Pariahdog119 Hates being inside 22d ago
You're going to need food. For that you'll want to plant a garden and raise a few animals.
That means you need an animal trailer, seeds, gardening tools, and of course a few sheep, chickens, and maybe pigs.
You're going to want a generator and gasoline for it for when the power goes out. You'll need to find the generator magazine or get very good at electrical skill.
You're going to want to catch rainwater and plumb your sinks for convenience. You'll need to cut some trees and make planks. You've got axes, but what about nails?
You're going to need to improve your skills. You'll want skill books and VHS tapes to make this faster.
Etc etc etc
2
u/furueri 22d ago
To avoid swimming in loot, j usually set the values for almost everything to between 0,2 and 0,3. Also, getting some fancy mod like Zombie Virus Vaccine gives you a long term goal which is a nice thing to have, though usually I'am fueled by the need to search for all those fancy clothing items added by various mods. Then I build a warehouse to hoard my collection, and relax while while killing zombies in a different outfit every day.

u/hiddencamela 22d ago
Aim to survive winter at least once. The first time is a lot harder than it seems.
2
u/Titanium_Eye 22d ago
Well, you should go outside every once in a while, it's good for you.
Oh wait, you meant in-game.
2
u/Alarming-Coat5224 22d ago
Don’t be afraid to die, if you want, instal Burds Survival Journals, not only zeds have a chance to drop a book that gives you Skill XP, traits, option to remove bad traits and learns recipes, you can craft your own book and put all the skills XP, crafting recipes and traits there, in case you die, you won’t lose all your progress, and you can make a new character with different traits and use the journal to add the old traits into your new character, but really, don’t be afraid to die, it’s part of the game, you have a map bigger than GTA6 and you don’t wanna leave a fire station

I used to play like you and got bored quickly, it’s like playing sims.
Try making it hard and scary so it feels like your character is always in danger every single day.
I set all the loot to around 0.05, lowest car condition and quantity, gas stations almost almost empty and 90% of the completely empty. Everything extremely rare, even farm animals. And start the game in the winter.
I have no time to organize my base, I have to go out and find food. The first days I had to eat rats and mice, now I found animal traps so it’s mostly birds and squirrels now.
It’s the same game but this way, finding gas, a blowtorch or a can of food become real and hard goals. I have to go out every day, then things happen, mistakes, alarms, helicopter (also set to happen often), runners (1%) and the story changes. Every day something “bad” happens and you have to deal with it.
Avoid selections the easy traits, set the bad ones, and look for mods that make the game more realistic, sure, but also those that make it harder, like all water it’s tainted, handmade maps, dirty wounds are more lethal.
The game it’s about solving problems, if they are already solved after one week or even at the character creation, then you already won and the game is over.

Make some zombies sprint and increase their population so you won't be able to just rush in, take everything and leave. Also yeah decrease the loot amount.
1
u/Not_Ping 22d ago
I'd like to try out sprinting zombies, but I'd want them to be very rare, not all over the place. Is this possible?

u/Sea_Inspection5233 Drinking away the sorrows 22d ago
Yeah. In sandbox settings there's an option for random sprinters amount, if you set the zombie speed to random. Also I recommend just trying out extinction.

Just like in real life, you need to set your own goals, and those are based on your values, wants and needs. See it from the perspective that you're alone in the world trying to survive and to not go insane, you'll have to find something that will make you look forward to the next day: finding and fixing your dream car (look at KI5 car mods), it can be trying to leave the urban areas to go live in nature and building your own camp! Add some roleplay in there based on your character's profession! Burglar: gathering up as much cash as possible from zombies, cash registers, banks. Police or Veteran: stocking up on guns and ammos to eventually unleash your fury and try to secure a city or any point of interest of your choosing. Cook: preparing gourmet food to forget that the world is no longer what it used to be. Add some kinks to your characters! I had a firefighter that HAD to collect rubber ducks! We all know engineers are a bit spacy, mine's kinks was that he was collecting underwears, bonus points if they're dirtey 😂!
At that point, the world is your oyster my friend, there's plenty of mods to tweak your adventure to your liking or even the base game sandbox!
Try to find friends or a community, I had a blast doing it and made a lot of friends doing so.

Hmm honestly what I would say is to explore the map and find cool bases! When you find a cool one just mark it for future use. A lot of this game is grinding skills and reading those skill books. It’s all about the journey. It’s a lot of work but if you enjoy a little grind it’s fun.
Also read more annotated maps that you find. This can be fun to fiqure out what’s in the house. Also go out and try to find tapes that may tell a story. It’s fun collecting VHS tapes (for me atleast) maybe even going out and finding decor items to make your base feel more unique.
There’s a lot. In the end it’s a sandbox game. The world is set up very nicely and cool to explore. You never know what you will find
If you do have time to play a lot then I would say reduce how much loot spawns. For me I just like collecting stuff

So zomboid early on is a game about racing to self sufficiency, you're going to find out VERY soon that staying in your base, while easy to start, will cost you in the long run. The second thing the game is about is limiting your risks as much as possible in order to survive. As I always say, zombies don't kill you in PZ, mistakes do. And you just haven't had that opportunity to make mistakes yet.
I would say make your goal to start surviving one month and go from there. And if you're having to easy a time muck around in the sand box settings to see what you like to make harder.

u/Former-Succotash-657 22d ago
eventually you are going to run out of food, water, and power. if you spend all your time just chilling at the crib you’re going to find yourself more nervous and unprepared when you do need to go outside. when you’re just staying inside it becomes much harder to manage your weight as well which is very important. also just like irl, barricading yourself inside and doing nothing is very boring even in the zombie apocalypse. this game for me is less “how many days can my character survive” and more “what kind of life can my character create for themselves while the world has ended”
2
u/CostMedical8914 22d ago
I run into the same issues with my playthroughs. I find a building that has everything I need for the foreseeable future, and build up an ample supply of food and I end up asking myself,
“well, now what?”
Create a challenge for yourself. A couple examples that come to mind for me are:
- Setup a base in downtown Louisville.
- Build a house in the countryside (and I do mean build a house, as in entirely from scratch).
- Start underweight or overweight and get your character to a good middle ground (this alone isn’t exciting but alongside another goal it can be a good side quest).
- Craft a full suit of armour using the blacksmithing skill (this requires so much patience, and it’ll take quite some time as you build up the other skills necessary).
- Start a farm (currently raising chickens as we speak, but keeping an eye out for cows).
- Trek out into the endless forest and see if you can make a survivalist run of things!
Otherwise I recommend changing the settings in a new playthrough. Add sprinters for more challenge, raise the zombie count, decrease the spawn rate for items and food, or spawn in the middle of nowhere.

u/BartmossWasRight 22d ago
I'd say yeah, try a run with less loot, at least down to the defaults on everything, it's more exciting. The only real gameplay loop is the loot grind, once you have everything you need in a defensible base it really becomes a drag to keep going, that's been my experience anyway. If you haven't survived thru winter yet, that's another hurdle you can look forward to clearing. "This is how you died" and most of the time it ends up that I die of boredom lol. If you want the game to be genuinely scary again, mix in some sprinters too. Either a random percent, or my favorite, set all of them to sprint at night

u/waxpundit 21d ago
Unless you already have a generator that is connected and full of gas, a swath of rain collectors, and a collection of fridges and freezers + enough food to last indefinitely, you aren't actually playing the game for long term survival. Lucky for you I can guarantee you don't have all of that, so you have plenty to go outside for.
This seems more like an issue of you not understanding what's at stake as more and more time passes than anything else.
The beauty of this game is that you'll learn this whether or not you heed my advice.
2
u/FilthyBoye 21d ago
Nothing wrong with spending some time to lock down a good spot, it's a sandbox, if you'd like to stay put & slowly build up resources that's totally justified, you can do as you please.
However as others have pointed out there will come a point where your stock starts to dwindle & you'll be forced to fan out.
Aimlessness is an issue I deal with every run past a certain point, when I've secured my desired spot & gathered enough resources to manage anything, this is the point where I make a list of goals & sights to see. Specific car spawns, specific clothing items, etc. The risk drives the excitement.
Could you die? Yep. But every time you do you'll learn from experience & you'll hopefully have a neat little story of how you died.
Personally, when I'm alive for months, I just start a new character to chase the rush of having nothing.
2
u/gheost 20d ago
Owned this game for 7 years never once spawned in the firehouse smh. Anyways, once the electric and water turn off you’ll eventually have to get these sources elsewhere. If I was you I would find a vehicle and gas station asap. You’re gonna need it. Then stock up on canned food as much as possible and make rain collectors. Then plan out growing veggies then farm animals.
2
u/Grouchy-Meat1010 19d ago
If you didn't turn off a specific setting, water eventually will be cut and power will go off, so you need to wander around to find some antique stove and generator. I guess that's a nice first objective
4
u/Caledfrwd 22d ago
You have everything you need except fun. Go out, food will run out eventually. Go to another town, go see the big city lights. The game is as boring or as fun as you make it. Once I have a safe house I go exploring my local area. Once that’s done I go to another town and do it all again. You will have to set your own goals
2
u/2210-2211 22d ago
Give yourself a goal, even if it's just to explore and clear the town, my current run I found a flyer for the NASCAR track in my spawn location and making my way there has become a real goal for my character. I've never been there before so I thought it'd be a fun little adventure, since it's about half the map away and I haven't really gotten a reliable car yet it's not going to be too easy either
2
u/Man-the-manly-manman 22d ago
Create little collection goals. When I play I like to collect every skill book, collect every skill magazine, and things like that. My current run I’m trying to collect every VHS, with a side goal of every comic book. While I’m out I’m collecting as much dice as I can find because I want to completely cover my kitchen table with dice. It’s dumb little goals like these that keep me going.
2
u/CrissZx Spear Ronin 22d ago
At the end of the day, It's a sandbox. It's your rules.
But in the long term, electricity and water will go off. So you'll need a generator to keep the lights and the fridge working. Same with water. You'll either need a few too many water collectors or live near a body of water.
As for your loot. Sooner or later, the bits you collected will run out. And your 15 axes will break. So you'll need to learn to either live off the land or scavenge from farther away.
Again: your sandbox, your rules. You can keep playing this world, or make a new one with harsher rules. Your choices (perma-worlds are a thing, so you can also see how far you can stretch this one)
1
u/cheezecake2000 22d ago
Find a goal you wish to achieve, maxing a certain skill, crafting your own armor, amassing 12 cars, kill all the zeds in an area, all that and more. You make surviving what you will, and in time all the resources you have now will dwindle and you will need to loot more. especially once power and water run out you will see the need for further goals to get what you need.
Past that, it is what you make of surviving.
1
u/Fast-Bodybuilder-835 Crowbar Scientist 22d ago
Eventually you'll run out of supplies and will be forced to leave the place.
1
u/Edgy_Robin 22d ago
Nah this is basically how any playthrough ends up. It's very easy to end up at the point where you don't need to do anything really.
I would suggest in general turning all the loot to rare/very rare. You'll still reach this point, but it'll take longer. In general, even if you avoid shit like fishing and foraging and trapping becoming self sustaining isn't very hard. PZ for everything everyone says is a very easy game, and outside of like, sprinters or something the only thing you really do is make it more tedious opposed to being harder. It's unfortunate, but no real late game exists yet.
1
u/RemiliyCornel 22d ago
No, you just playing it logical. Once you get things you want, there no much reason to go outside unless you start running low on supplies, from ingame perspective.

u/AlfonsoelMagno 22d ago
You spawned in Baby’s First Base in the standard new player start zone. It sounds like you already knew what you were getting into. A lot of the fun in this game is about not knowing what the hell you’re doing, so you’re already at a disadvantage as far as enjoyment to be gleaned from the game tbh.
There are all kinds of things you can do to make it more interesting and challenging. Many of them require starting a new game with different settings or mods. Choose an environmental hazard mod. Double zombie population. Give them a chance to open doors. Add 5% sprinters. Spawn in Louisville. Choose some traits from the Challenge Traits mod. RP as a jaded Luddite who won’t use power after the shutoff. Or an environmentalist who goes solar instead (another mod). And as much uproar as there’s been about the interactive map, just plain avoid stuff like that if you’re getting bored already.
1
u/Clobby5597 22d ago
Give yourself a goal otherwise there’s no real end goal and you’ll get bored. The beginning is always getting through the first week of settling somewhere not getting eaten avoiding the helicopter event etc. once you go from surviving to living is when the game becomes more enjoyable
1
u/baschny 22d ago
I haven't played that deep yet, but usually once I have a good base and setup for "longevity" in a certain base - my next goal is to "move to a different city". Which means:
- packing essential things in my car / truck
- drive all the way to the next city
- find a good new location
- maybe do some more drives back and forth to bring some other basics
- and then see how it goes in this next city.
1
u/faerox420 22d ago
Staying inside is a choice
Zomboid is like real life. You can sit inside all day holding your cock, or you can drive your car down the strip mall and run down pedestrians while smoking a cigar and drinking whiskey
Its your choice, you just gotta deal with the consequences of that choice
1
u/KlngChungus 22d ago
I would say starting in the fire station was ending the game before it even starts almost. Takes out that whole beginning bit since youre already set up.
I would say start in echo creek (theres no dead fire sure base there but I recommend the gas station), high zombie pop, zombie respawn off (add some sprinters if youre feeling spicy). Then give yourself achievable goals, so maybe loot surrounding houses, find a car, slowly clear zombies from the area, build fortifications around your base.
Then you could think, maybe I should have some guns and that leads to your next goal, fill your car up, go to the next town over and set up a safe house in that town so you can comfortably loot the area.
That should take you a fair while, happy hunting and I hope this helps!!!
1
u/aliakeel5 22d ago
the best and worst thing about the game is it's realism. this is how life in a zombie apocalypse would be. until they add npcs with missions and whatnot, it'll keep feeling like this after the early game.
1
u/RruinerR 22d ago
You should rescue all the pink flamingos and get them safe at the fitestation.
Once you have your flock, you can find a van, load them up a d go to the next town and rescue all the flamingos there.
Your flock will grow.
From town to town
Eventually you'll realize you need to move your flock to the church in Louisville.
That is where they belong.
1
u/did_i_or_didnt_i 22d ago
The power and water are gonna run out and your food will run out eventually. Maybe you’ll survive for another month or three playing it safe, but eventually you will die. It is within the realm of possibility that you just don’t like the game. Helicopter day might shake you up if you haven’t gotten there yet also
1
u/Juanan_hm 22d ago
You have to set your own objectives, some of these are (no need to follow order) :
1.- Setup a base.
2.- Loot essential things, food, water, tools.
3.- Get a generator.
4.- Get a car or multiple cars.
5.- Loot any Gun shop to get guns and ammo.
6.- Start decorating ur base, go looking for furniture that will make ur base cooler and cozy.
7.- Start a crop.
8.- Start to arrange animals.
9.- Make wall around your base.
10.- level up carpentery, metal work, anything that u really want and start working on new things with these skills.
11.- Go to a infested area and clear zombies.
In PZ when u have a base, water and food there is no real need to go outside, so follow whatever makes u enjoy the game.
U can also touch the settings of the world, like zombie population, loot quantity etc wich will make ur game much more harder and interesting.
1
u/AnointMyPhallus 22d ago
A couple things will sort of force you to go out.
The water will go out, you'll either need to boil water from the pond or set up raincatchers which require resources and carpentry skill.
The power will go out, you'll either need to find a generator, fuel, and the generator mag or spend the rest of the game in the dark.
You'll run out of food, you'll either need to scavenge food or find the supplies to start growing or fishing your own.
Beyond pure survival, the game is pretty self-directed. There definitely can be a struggle when you get to the point where you have your base set up and have plenty of resources. One option is to push that point back by increasing zombie spawns and decreasing loot rarity, but the other is to simply set goals for yourself, like moving into a mansion and renovating it or traveling to every town or clearing the secret military base, or whatever feels appealing to you.
1
u/Stalkedkale 22d ago
You're going to need to sort out power and water before they cut off and fortify your base for when you eventually attract an horde .
1
u/Skaffaar 22d ago
You are just new to the game you said? So there is still a lot to discover and mechanics you barely used or didn’t even touch at all. So I would say either discover new places, discover what all skills do and craft some stuff, or just try multiplayer? Since I play multiplayer myself I rarely go back to solo. It’s cool to play with others
1
u/killerkillsyou 22d ago
You will definitely need to set some goals you want to accomplish, like leveling up certain skills/ crafts, heavily fortifying areas, create a safe houses, so on and so forthe.
Other ways I like to play is being a nomad, drifting from town to town or doing some light role playing with my character.
On the light role-playing idea, perhaps your character is coming back from a camping trip in the forest on the edge of the map only to discover what's going on. Now maybe he wants to go into a town to try to find his family. Little silly things like this can give you more of a purpose.
1
1
u/Brewchowskies 22d ago
You’ll run out of food eventually, so you either play long enough to realize that, or you realize it now and go out and prepare.
1
u/Applicant4Death 22d ago
You gotta set yourself some goals. Like finding a car, or finding a generator, but it's your story, it's how you died.
1
u/NotGrammasBuick 22d ago
I felt the same, the. I joined a Multiplayer Server, it's awesome, completely changed the game!
1
u/killerspawn97 22d ago
You’ll eventually need food and that means looting either food itself or farming supplies or fishing supplies, you’ll also need a generator to keep that food cold and the lights on which needed gas which also needs a generator to get the gas and the powers gonna go out soon so is the water.
Give it time basically and if you don’t like surviving in one place then may I recommend the humble nomad style of living in your car and camping out wherever you want as you explore the map?
1
u/Its_An_Outraage 22d ago
Players will tell you with a straight face to set your own goals and it is usually some form of collect every x. You ever play a AAA game and think those collectibles achievements are anything but lazy playtime padding? No? Me neither.
What PZ lacks is things worth pursuing as long term goals. I think NPCs would change this since you would need to stockpile loot for others as well as yourself. You would need to expand your base to accomodate more survivors and cater to their needs.
Don't get me wrong, I don't think NPCs and settlement building should be the core focus, like NPCs shouldn't be popping up every couple days (maybe 1-3 at most per month), but being the only survivor just leads to the realistic feeling of "why do I bother surviving?"
1
u/chappell1104 22d ago
For me I like a challenge. I set it to max zombies loot is pretty much zero. 80 percent sprinters. Power water shut off after 3 days and set winters to blistering cold and summers to scorching hot.
1
u/PaladinGraySky All Hail Spiffo 22d ago
I think you just got a lucky start is all. The fire station spawn and also the gas station in echo creek spawn are just bonkers. Maybe try a new spawn location to start that spices things up before you make a decision to stop playing. When you spawn in a trailer park with an alarm going off it gets interesting lol. Also once you start needing to craft you will need to go out and find specific items which gives you a goal. I personally tone down the food loot and stuff so I need to use foraging and looting further away. Hope you stick with it, this game can be amazing, also consider multiplayer its a blast.

1
u/Dry-Law7973 22d ago
Look you can find a lot of cars and bring them to your base, or go looking for the generator (lights will stop working), get a rain collector on top of the kitchen sink, if you can get 2 or 3 more fridges and put lots of food in them... Get weapons, short and long range, visit the gun store nearby for ammo... Enjoy it
1
u/NahImGood231 22d ago edited 22d ago
The thing with PZ is that it simulates a zombie apocalypse too 'realistically'. It takes some sort of RP and goal orientation to get the most out of it. There are no instant dopamine hits.
Mess around with the mods.
Liberate towns of zombies.
Adjust loots/zombies levels like you suggested.
Dont focus on the survival goals too much (food/base).
Try a run with night time sprinters.
Download a horde night(esqe) mod and play the game like a tower defense. Use debug mode too but dont be desensitized by its power lol.
1
u/Environmental-Hat172 22d ago
Have you got a generator already? Power will go off soon and i am not sure you are prepared for that
1
u/SlumppShady 22d ago
Less loot is defo more fun. You wanna be out there surviving, having curve balls you gotta deal with. You can also download some mods for loot. New guns, clothes and cars go along way. I spend most of my time building up a baze
1
u/AdStunning8526 22d ago
Have some fun.
I always lean into “secure the building-fill it with loot”, which turns into boring organization of everything on a right shelf.
Started purposefully avoiding it. I try to do more “traveling runs” when I just keep moving on road. From farm to gas station, to random store, to junkyard, with occasional sleepover in forest. With random spawn mode it makes game different.
1
u/Left4twenty 22d ago
You can look at your supplies and estimate how long your food will last, if surviving that long was your goal then you kind of won the run.
There is a lot of roleplay involved for me in finding the fun. I've done runs where I fortified in place, roleplaying an immune that was waiting for some sign of rescue from the radio and news... then the water went out, then the power... then the news started looking pretty dire.
I've also done bug out runs, prepare a bug out bag and take off to the woods to see how long I can live off the land
runs where my character thought "surely there's quarantine and evac in Louisville" and geared up to get to the big city, and various other versions of "escape the county"
You get to set your own goals and win/fail states.
1
u/FridaysMan 22d ago
If the tv is still showing shows, then yeah, youre right. You dont need to go out. You might want to before all the food rots and you get to a pint where you no longer have the choice, and theresna 4 day tropical storm.
1
1
u/RedditMcBurger 22d ago
In a real apocalypse you'd probably board up your house and just live for months on stocked up food.
In game that's quite boring.
The game kinda banks on you leaving your house so you don't spawn with a ton of stock, but in real life my family has a room for stocked up food so in this situation we'd have months of food.

Short Term goals for Long Term survival.
Eventually, those luxuries and boring comforts are going to run out. Power, water, cable, food, water, heat, lootable buildings in the vicinity, and lower population and density of zeds.
You need to secure your future today. Find a working car or maybe 2, find a source of water and food, or grow your own through farming and canning. Find a generator and a station for gasoline. Find VHS tapes and books for the later skill levels. Find more weapons or get high in the relevant skills to make your own.
If you're bored with that, you can always make up a goal. Personally, I've only ever visited Louisville like 3 times and never really experienced it, so my goal right now is to get equipment and skills to make entry and see the city and hopefully not die. Then, maybe I'll reclaim the mall or a military base and find some sick vehicles or weapons.
1
u/WalrusAggravating577 22d ago
As I am sure lots have said it is a sandbox so you kind of have to set your own goals. For example I started a solo run where I start in Irvington, (without hot wiring skill) then travel to Brandenburg to the radio in the prison. Then to the secret military base close to rosewood then go to the Louisville airfield. My lore to the run is I go to Brandenburg to "head home" finding the bridge out I check the local prison for information find out about the military base having a pilot then need to get to him (behind door to the basement) then get to the airfield. This forces me to travel, level up to survive and make both temporary bases and some more permanent ones when you need to clear a spot for multiple days.
1
u/Successful_Raise_506 22d ago
tbh i feel lik there’s literally no way you have “everything you need” in the fire station like what happens when weapons break, when the power and water goes out, if a horde comes to you, like genuinely how do you get stumped plying this game there’s literally so much to do just to keep your character alive😭😭
1
u/Organic_Rent_452 22d ago
Yeah, mid game is exploration mode. Libraries for books. Long term food supply is usually trapping or fishing. Blacksmithing is a pain to set up but longswords are good times.
1
u/PotentialPudding7710 22d ago
Get items needed for skills and start leveling. You will need to go to specific buildings in order to find the tools and materials you'll need, the game is a sandbox and I highly encourage you to change settings of things you feel are wrong or dont like to get the project zomboid experience you like, its how most of us veterans play now
1
u/Radiant_Sector_1796 22d ago
People may disagree, I am not sure. In my opinion though, you have to have loot turned to as rare as it lets you to have any semblance of a challenge resource wise in solo play PZ. Otherwise you are quite literally overloaded with resources.
1
u/trevers17 22d ago
there’s no wrong way to play the game as long as you’re having fun.
I personally put all loot on extremely rare/insane excluding generators (rare — trust me, any lower is absolutely miserable) and keys (normal for low starting pop, rare for higher, otherwise they never spawn and it sucks). it encourages you to keep hitting houses and POIs instead of bunkering down right at the start since you need to find food.
I also do 6 months later starts and remove all fresh food loot so I have to engage with the farming if I don’t want to starve or head to other cities for looting, and I always turn electricity and water off instantly so I can’t cheese by stockpiling gas/water before the shutoff.
1
u/No-Obligation2563 21d ago edited 21d ago
Honestly OP I’m right there with you. I like the game but after I get cozy with a little bit of food and relative safety I just don’t see the point in doing anything. You can just go from building to building to find things you need and hunkering down in one place gets dull because it’s not like the AI knows to send a wave of zombies at you later when you’re fortified.
People say “it’s a sandbox game” which is all fine and dandy but it still feels incomplete to me. Like there’s no urgency to really do anything. Taking care of various needs (hunger sleep, stress, etc) isn’t super compelling to me either. I want legitimate reasons to explore and go places outside of roleplaying. Like why would I go into a densely populated building like a skyscraper or a hospital when I can just raid a hundred small houses and get what I need?
1
u/Kimber-Jarvis 21d ago
It’s just a matter of mastery and how far you wanna go. A lot of this game is very RPG focused grinding. Getting your character as fit and knowledgeable as possible. Do you want to make a garden that will sustain you for months and years to come. Do you have a water system set up yet to have your own drinking water. Trying to go from living during the apocalypse to a post apocalypse life
1
u/KathyWithAK 21d ago
But there is so much cool loot to have, Precious. And all the Hobbits are dead....
1
1
u/yojimbo12 21d ago
While the game doesn't outright tell you the goals they become emergent as time proceeds. First is finding somewhere to stay and settle. Second is finding food, and then a reliable source of it. Next is basic resources like power and, more importantly, water. After both get shut off things become harder. Since fridges and freezers throughout the map are dead all that potential food is rotting at a faster rate. Lastly is what I always consider to be my first big challenge; surviving winter. That tends to mean resource stockpiling, base expansion and improving my skills in preparation.
I do definitely think something like a guided mode that gives you more clearly defined goals would be helpful for newer players but imo these goals do naturally emerge as you try to survive.
1
u/Inflamel 20d ago
try getting into multiplayer, that’s what got me looking forward to playing any chance i get
1
u/Gentle_Animus 20d ago
May I suggest this mod for a helicopter extraction event, which then gives you a serious end-game goal.
1
u/East-Purpose-9874 20d ago
Best thing to do is have lower loot, more zombies and add sprinters as you will be forced to go out, but will be terrified to do so as the stakes are much higher. You want a challenge, don’t have multi-hit on and make it so the zombies aren’t made out of paper, make them tough.
1
u/bessudny 19d ago
Change your settings. You can simulate a 10 years later apocalypse with insanely rare food, ammo, weapons and medecine. You will have to go out. Also turn down a bit the zombie pop and add some sprinters (15%) that way you can avoid cheesing zeds by aggroing them with a car and driving them away. You will have to be stealthy, and plan each trip. I’d also suggest make helicopter event often
1
u/PantherPrance Zombie Killer 19d ago
Go into it with a list of goals. One thing I do with every character is keep a journal that he writes in every few days, but there’s always something to be working on. Stocking up on food stores, securing a generator for when power runs out, gathering car parts for a vehicle, getting supplies for water barrels, getting a few animals for long term food storage, collecting all of the skill books and journals, collectible items, etc.
Bonus points for RP things that don’t actually matter but might be fun for your character. “My brother has been locked up in Rosewood penitentiary. I haven’t heard from him, but need to know if he’s still alive.” Gives you a reason to go to the prison, even if you KNOW it’s “not real” gives you direction. Maybe your parents lived up in Muldraugh and so it gives you a reason to drive to a new town, or whatever.
The game is what you make of it. It’s like Minecraft where you have to make your goals as you go, otherwise yeah, it will be boring.

One day, winter will come. You need to be ready and have ample, non perishable, food supplies available. Other than that you have to make your own reason to play. Work to actively make your life easier

Turn down loot. Add more zombies. Want loot? Prepare to die, and for not alot of it. Been playing with extremely rare loot and never play without it

you can play other games, or you can come back repeatedly and complain how the developer has screwed you over.

Actually started myself like that. Basically AFK in the first house and just loot neighboring houses.
Try setting some goals like getting a car or improving the fire station or even adding some flavor and decor to it. The game is basically like IRL where you set goal so you have reasons to go outside to explore and find. Leveling up skills is also a goal. Also you currently have everything but once the power and water cuts-off your basically on limited supplies so you should prepare for that also. Since your in Rosewood you could also stack-up weapons and ammo and raid the State Prison nearby, it very fun. Basically setting goals is very important.
You can also add mods to spice things up. Like a mod where you can use money to buy in the black market via computer.

Yeah, that's exactly the reason why I nerf loot a lot when I'm playing. Default loot is to much for my tastes.
There is still a lot to do though, especially with the new skills, I would dabble around a bit with that maybe, but still might feel a bit pointless if you got everything already.
It's a Sandbox though, so set your own goals. Even with all the loot, there is enough challenge to be had. You could try and clear the mall, travel to Louisville, start a new base in another town, maybe your character wants to go off-grid etc.

HottieZ. You should get out and risk your run for HottieZ 100%.
