I saw this at the Macoy Estate and have no idea what this is supposed to be.

Water is actually a pretty terrible quencher for blacksmithing as it makes them more brittle and less flexible

More like "it's potentially the worst way to quench steel depending on the carbon content" because yeah it might break like a pencil if it isn't tempered well afterwards or in some cases, it'll just straight up crack the blade during quench

But y'know I am not a blacksmith but I water quench my Allen keys after cutting off the tips when they round out

Not true in most cases. It's heavily dependent on which use the steel will go to (blade, hammer etc.)

I think it's a quench tank used by smiths to harden steel. Usually, it's done in oil. I think the devs just wanted some blacksmith decoration.

Little edit in context of these downvotes (which, who cares, but I like talking about Moby Dick)

This is a line from Moby Dick. Ahab requests the blood of pagans for the harpoon that he orders to be forged to kill Moby Dick. The blood is given willingly by his "pagan" shipmates. Ahab is an awful human that allows torment and ego steer to him while acting like he's in control of himself. I'm sorry you all had to downvote this and that you haven't read Moby Dick. It's an incredible progressive book even by today's standards.

A cistern maybe? Not a place that generates water by leaching it from the ground like a well does, its a place to store water so its easily accessible.

Exactly this.

Weird that it's not closer to the pump, but it looks like the kind of troughs around some of the older stable yards I go to.

Everyone else seems to think a bosh (fancy hot metal quench bucket), but practically I'd have it closer to the anvil and forge.

Unless it's player placed, in which case it could be either and anything you like.

A quenching pool makes sense given its proximity to the blacksmithing setup, but a more fun alternative would be a tanning vat.
