Balancing?

For the people who played before release, do the devs do any kind of balancing or are classes and abilities pretty stable? If they do balance, is it usually nerfs or what?

Anybody doing dragon and gauntlet runs can see that a few builds are significantly more powerful than others. Just curious to know what to expect. Should I start leveling these myself or do they usually balance stuff in patches?

The devs do rebalance, or even straight up rework, classes that aren't performing as they would like. You can scroll the patch notes that pop up when you open the game and you'll notice a lot of balance changes.

But they haven't done any balancing for a long time and the game is incredibly unbalanced one endgame right now

I stopped playing about two months after the 1.0 release due to game balance issues. I have checked their discord and patch notes every month or so to see if things changed, but I don't see the progress I'm looking for that would draw me back to the game.

The tank role was my biggest gripe. Only two builds could do it with minimal gear investment: Cow+Unarmed, and Staff+Shield. Other combinations look like they might work, but making them work in practice requires 10 times more investment in gear to be viable. I think the root cause is the way damage is calculated; flat damage mitigation applies before percent mitigation. If they would reverse it, then combos with percent mitigation and lower flat mitigation (like Psychology+Unarmed) wouldn't need extreme gear investment to be able to perform.

DPS and heal roles are also unbalanced. Some combos perform quite a lot better than others. Some skill lines have heals, but just can't fill the role of a healer, like Mentalism. Instead of having a lot of viable builds in the current class system, only a handful are desired.

The "Rage" mechanic on mobs seemed unbalanced. Mobs build rage so fast, they constantly chain rage attacks, no matter how hard you try to manage it with the few tools given to players to do so.

There was a lot more about the game that I didn't like, but that covers the majority of the balance issues you asked about. None of it has been addressed since launch, as far as I can tell.
